Xbox Live updated, 360 Netflix exclusivity touted

Microsoft adds Games on Demand, Avatar Marketplace, viewing parties, other improvements to console's online service; Netflix search possible down the line.

As scheduled, the latest Xbox Live update is now up, running, and ready for download. As outlined on the official Xbox.com site, the new update brings a variety of features to the Xbox 360's online service, which boasts more than 20 million users. (To date, more than 30 million Xbox 360s have been sold worldwide.)

As seen in the video above, the update tweaks the 360's Netflix streaming capabilities to allow users to edit their movie queues and have their Avatars watch movies in a Mystery Science Theater 3000-style theater. However, today Microsoft reiterated that its arrangement with the Los Gatos, California-based movie rental service is the only one of its kind in the industry.

"This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360," the company said in a statement aimed at rumors that the service is coming to the PlayStation 3 and Wii. "The Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox Live Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers, at no additional cost."

Also live today is the Avatar Marketplace, which allows players to purchase new clothing and items for their virtual alter egos on the service. In addition to a selection of free clothing, the virtual mannequins can be outfitted with premium brand-name items from clothiers Adidas, Quiksilver, Roxy, and Tokidoki, along with game-themed attire from Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes, Gears of War 2, BioShock, and several Halo games. Offerings include an Adidas trucker hat for 80 Microsoft points ($1), one of three BioShock Big Daddy helmets for MSP160 ($2), a set of COG armor from Gears of War for MSP320 ($4), and a remote-control Warthog toy from Halo for MSP320 ($4).

Last but not least, today also saw the launch of Xbox Live's new Games on Demand service, which offers a variety of full Xbox 360 catalog titles for the console. The games' cost has proven controversial in other territories, with some titles going for more than double their retail prices in Australia and New Zealand. However, in the US and Canada, the Games on Demand store has a much lower two-tiered price structure--$19.99 or $29.99--with prices in dollars, not Microsoft points. However, many Games on Demand prices are still above that of used copies at retailers such as GameStop, which is currently offering Mass Effect for just $14.99 pre-tax and shipping.

Since last week, the Games on Demand Store's lineup has also changed slightly, with Atari's Test Drive Unlimited disappearing and Electronic Arts' Battlefield: Bad Company materializing without fanfare. Manuals for the games can be downloaded and printed from the games' respective pages on Xbox.com, though they cannot yet be ordered through the site for automatic download to 360s.

Today's Xbox Live revamp did not include several Xbox Live features promised during Microsoft's E3 press briefing. Microsoft has previously said that 1080p video playback, Zune video downloads, and integration with Twitter, Facebook, and GameSpot sister site Last.fm are all due "later this fall." Speaking with game blog Joystiq, Microsoft is also considering adding Netflix search to the service as part of a future update beyond the one later this year.

If I even could use a credit card to get the games on demand, I wouldn't. Those prices are extreme rip-offs, and by the sounds of things even bigger rip-offs for Australia and New Zealand. And even though I probably will pick up a few things from avatar market place, it should be cheaper.

Anyone who has the update know what the significance is of the circled number that now appears in the bar with your gamertag on your My Xbox menu screen (right above your rep rating)? Can't seem to find any mention of it in the update news.

Agreed. Exclusivity deals cost. Definitely explains why an Xbox Live Gold subscription is required for Netflix streaming.

WOW those game prices are outrageous. I can get a Bioshock hardcopy NEW for $19.99 from Gamestop. Assassin's Creed preowned is $19.99. Who chose these price points? They will only get money from suckers!

The Games on Demand are quite good, a bit cheaper than GameStop even, but... Xbox 360 HDDs are still very overpriced. In fact..their price is pretty much exaggerated compared to PC and laptop HDDs in the market. It's a good idea, but could you please lower the HDD prices Microsoft?

I'm going to LOL at the people paying $1 to $2 for avatar clothing. There is an inside Xbox video on XBL that shows a halo RC warthog for $4. Microtransactions are the future unfortunately. :(

You can always find the games listed there for cheaper, but they pay extra for the "convenience" the way I see it. So I don't really have a problem with the pricing, really. The fact they charge for Avatar clothing is ridiculous. Do they really expect people to buy that stuff? I just picked some generic outfit and haven't messed with my Avatar since. It doesn't do anything, why would I spend money on freakin' outfits for it?

Why does Australia always get ripped off when it comes to buying anything? we pay twice what most other countries pay for almost everything.

These are all 10 bucks or less at gamestop used...I guess this is a way to sell the overpriced hard drives. I will just buy them used and have a physical copy of the game instead of paying triple for a digital copy.

awsome update not so awsome prices the only good deal i see up there is BF BC for 20 buks thats a decent buy even though you can fins it cheaper and everything else is way overpriced. I can see this being big if the prices reach a reasonable range.

seriously, avatar clothes should not be costing 400 Microsoft points. They should be more like 5-10 Microsoft points and that goes for all the avatar stuff. I think I'll stick with the one outfit I bought and never buy anymore to be honest. Oh yeah, and could they not get more recent games a downloadable...sheesh!

Wow... The games are sooo expensive. And the props OMG. This is just another attempt of Microsoft trying to bleed people dry. More fool the people who pay the ridiculous prices they have the utter nerve to charge us. I say they can shove their Games On Demand and Avatar Props up their ar$es. I'd love an explanation of em for the pricing structure.

Unless they add netflix to CANADIAN residents, this update is mainly useless to me. Infact I doubt that 20 million Live users are all located in the US anways. More fudged information released by MS...

I'm still waiting for more details on the earnable avatar customizations. Apparently games are able to unlock avatar pieces? I'm interested to know which games and how it will be indicated.

I've been running the preview for a few weeks now and I gotta say one of the best updates is the stupid party drops and reconnects. No longer do I have to quickly get out of a party and right back into it. Oh and I guess the rest of it is nice as well. Although I just don't see how well this games on demand is going to do when the cost is just so high. But everything else is a welcome change.

So now the question remains on whether or not to buy On-Demand games or go to Gamestop and see if you can get them cheaper used.
