Xbox One Adding New Original Xbox Backwards Compatibility Games, Including Morrowind

You can play The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on your Xbox One beginning today.

Update: It turns out Microsoft has more extensive plans the four games mentioned below. 19 more original Xbox games will be added to Xbox One backwards compatibility this month, split across two batches. In addition to those that were discovered in advance, we're also getting Jade Empire and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, among others. The original story follows.

After Xbox One backwards compatibility support for original Xbox games was announced, Microsoft made it clear that we would not see new titles added regularly. To date, only one batch of games has been released, but another has now arrived--and it includes some quality additions.

Now Playing: Most Anticipated Exclusive Games Coming To Xbox One In 2018

Microsoft teased that new original Xbox BC games would be revealed during an Inside Xbox broadcast scheduled for tonight, April 10. Ahead of that, listings for several such games have been discovered on the Xbox Store (via Reddit user nuton) with release dates set for today, though they can't yet be purchased.

The biggest of the bunch is The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the acclaimed open-world RPG that helped to expand the franchise to a wider audience. The others to be found (at least so far) are Destroy All Humans, MX Unleashed, and Full Spectrum Warrior.

Official details on these releases will be shared later today. Original Xbox BC games work just like Xbox 360 games; you simply pop in the disc or download a digital copy and can play it on Xbox One without any real fuss.

Until now, there had been 13 original Xbox games available on Xbox One through backwards compatibility. Those include Black, Psychonauts, Prince of Persia, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. That's in addition to the hundreds of Xbox 360 games that are also playable, such as recent addition Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

@glendale1: If I remember yesterdays Inside Xbox episode were this was announced, it's a list of 19 game from the OG Xbox including Morrowind, KOTOR2, Jade Empire, and others. They start to roll out sometime next week, with the rest by the end of April. Hopefully I remembered correctly

Cool, Destroy All Humans. No interest in Morrowind, and no idea what the other 2 are. Though I assume MX is a generic "extreme" racing game? Absolutely no one is clamoring to go back and have games like this be BC. It would be like having Madden 02 show up lol. No GTAs, No Otogis, no Psi-Ops, no Conker, no Timesplitters, etc.

Hopefully this OG BC isn't completely littered with garbage that one one cares about.

MX is this batches' Fuzion Frenzy (another game that literally no one would care about)

@JustPlainLucas: That with the Ultimate Spider-Man game and both X-Men games would be great...but unfortunately also very unlikely due to the licensing involved.

Nice. Love Morrowind. I've actually been asking for Destroy All Humans 1 & 2 but never thought either would ever make the list so, that's awesome if true.

MX Unleashed? Hell yeah. Probably one of my all time favorite racing games. Never would have thought they would make it BC. Now all I need is 4x4 Evo 2.

Please tell me Morrowind is based on the GOTY edition. Bethesda hasn't been this dumb not to port the "Definitive" Editions of their games... yet.

@effinjay: How does an emulator know if you've beaten a game?

In most of these cases, they're not updating the games. They're getting licenses and contracts updated, doing boatloads of emulation testing and tuning, and updating store pages.

@Pyrosa: RetroPie has an achievement system for a lot of ROMs. I unlocked achievements for Super Metroid. So, it is possible.

@asnakeneverdies: Now we're talking... The emulator does indeed have access to all memory and storage space used by the app. Strange division of labor though, since the emulator team is at MS and the code team is at BethSoft. The emu team is technically already creating a branch for each individual game distro.

@xnshd: are achievements really that important? Do you really need the points to prove you beat a game or accomplished certain goals in games?

But maybe I'm old school.

@scottyp360: I most certainly DO NOT think that achivements are the be all end all deciding factor between being interested in getting these games again but as xNSHD stated it does add some fun replay value to something I might not have had interest in before, giving you a few extra things to strive for and are for the most part super addictive.

Hopefully we will see some juicy new features teased in tonight's upcoming Inside Xbox!

@asnakeneverdies: yet that really doesn't matter. would you class the 4k 360 games rereleases. they have shit done to them. its not a big ask for some achievements.

@xnshd: No they have not, Microsoft cannot alter the original game code (except for their own titles of course). Furthermore, those PS2 to PS4 titles are considered new or rereleases as they are not the exact same game anymore - especially given NONE had a digital release on the original format. And it is likely a "big ask" for adding achievements, your lack of understanding the mechanics, the cost or work involved does not change that FACT.

@xnshd: Those are not the straight PS2 ROMs, they have been altered slightly. The Xbox system is a true emulation system using the original Xbox and 360 ROMs. I do not see any developer putting extra work to make achievement flags for the games and generic ones that Microsoft might be able to add via the emulator are a bit of a waste. I feel it is more likely and worthy that they bring up online play for the old games than add generic achievement lists to these games.

@dlCHIEF58: they are simply made 1080p on ps4 thats all. the devs for these games do nothing in the emulation process for MS all they do is give permission. they said it was impossible to even do back compat yet they done it they said it was even more unlikely we would get OG xbox games yet they done it. adding achievements wouldnt be that hard.

@xnshd: LOL, If it were that easy then how come there is only a handful of games in this program? There is more work involved than you think on those titles, both technically and legally.

You are correct about the work when referring to the straight emulation as Microsoft does, but adding achievements CHANGES the game and is something Microsoft is not allowed to do. They cannot muck with the original code and adding interesting achievements based on the game is definitely outside what they are allowed to do - this would require extra work, both from Microsoft and the original developers. Also the developers are not going to allow Microsoft access to their source code to do this. Otherwise they would just be generic achievements set off by similar triggers, which lets be honest doesn't sound that interesting. Adding achievements is not hard, adding relevant ones tailored to the specific game is however.

@dlCHIEF58: over 300 games in the 360 back compat list and yes the original xbox ones have alot less mainly due to alot of the studios being out of business. adding achievements isnt that big of an ask. i dont care if its just simply achievements for completing the game or doing story related shit thats what achievements basically are now.

@xnshd: You keep saying that without understanding the work behind adding them, both on the BC team and most likely by the original developers (which honestly isn't going to happen). The reason we even have BC on the One is because they developed an easy and cost effective way to do it - achievement tags would add significantly to the process they now have down to a science. I am not opposed to them, I just realize the chances of it happening are slim to none so am trying to temper your own expectations.

My previous comment's first paragraph was referring to PS2 to PS4 titles, not Xbox ones, which you seem to have misunderstood. There is a reason why they only have a handful of games in there, it takes more work than the 360/Xbox BC titles because there is things they are adding since it is not straight emulation with a similar amount of legal/licensing work. Adding in trophy support is the part which likely amounts for a lot the cost of those projects according to a few gaming articles on the subject.

@dlCHIEF58: dude ive forgotten more than you know. this argument is boring me. im not saying its an easy task but neither was the creation of making 360 games work on the one or OG xbox titles work on the one. hell its a technological marvel how the xbox one x even exists in the first place. so adding some achievement although will be hard is not impossible.

@xnshd: LOL, nice cop-out and no you do not as your language dictates otherwise (unless using proper English, grammar, punctuation and capitalization is what you've forgotten....or you have gone completely brain dead which isn't out of the realm of possibility at this point). I am far older, more mature and of course more educated than you which is quite obvious in this back and forth. You thinking the One X is a technological marvel to even exist says enough about your knowledge concerning games and programming (i.e. little to none). Stop pretending you know what you are talking about, you are only embarrassing yourself at this point.

How to sum this up in a single word:

YYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!

(Yeah, yeah, I've got the original PC CD-ROMs, the printed books, maps, the Steam version, nothing new to see/read/hear in the game, etc... But this is still awesome.)

Hori gamepad + auto-repeating "frolic" button, ho!!! Time to get permanently stuck behind some doors without the benefit of a console to make them non-colliding!
