Microsoft previously promised that May would be a big month for Xbox news, and they certainly were not joking around. In case you missed it, Microsoft announced today that a new version of the Xbox One will launch June 9 for $399--the same price of Sony's industry-leading PlayStation 4. It was a surprise announcement, and it wasn't the only news Microsoft revealed today. We also learned that Games with Gold is coming to Xbox One in June and that entertainment apps like Netflix and HBO Go will no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription. In short, it was a big day for Microsoft.

We caught up with Microsoft chief marketing & strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi and chatted about all the major news Microsoft had to share today regarding the future of the Xbox platform. Before I could start asking questions, Mehdi told me that Microsoft decided to make these announcements today, ahead of E3, so that Microsoft's showing there could be all about games. "We are really excited about bringing what we hope will be a display of games that will tee up an incredible second holiday for Xbox One," he said.

Going back to the beginning, when do you think was the turning point when you decided you needed to offer a new, Kinect-free Xbox One unit?

Yusuf Mehdi: "There's a couple different data points we looked at. The first one is, we really deeply believe in this vision of Kinect as a core component of providing a next-generation game console. And as we've gotten into the launch and we've seen the usage; the usage has been incredible, we've had over a billion Xbox Kinect voice commands, the average Xbox One user does 120 commands a month; and so a few months into the system, we realized the Kinect really is a big hit. People are loving it. Developers are loving it. And so that gave us confidence that we've established the bar. I think the second thing is we've heard from customers, again, over the last couple of months, that there's a set of customers out there, Xbox One fans, the 80+ million who have not yet moved to an Xbox One [saying] 'Hey, I'd like more choice and more affordability to get there' And for many people, $399 is a very attractive price point."

You've previously spoken about the Xbox One and Kinect being inseparable, but now that they are separated, is this no longer true?

YM: "For us, we believe to have the premium, complete experience, you want to have Kinect and I think the things that you get--the biometric sign-in, voice control, the ability to say 'Xbox, go to Titanfall'--we think those really define the experience of [Xbox One]. That said, the Xbox One value proposition of an all-in-one games and entertainment device which is completely differentiated from anyone else--the ability to do two things at once, do instant switch, input one [for TV]--that all remains in the new $399 option. So we feel like we've got the right balance."

"For many people, $399 is a very attractive price point" -- Mehdi

What kind of feedback are you expecting from developers and people who are making apps, because before they were guaranteed that every unit would have a camera, and that's no longer going to be the case.

YM: "We made this decision in conjunction with our development partners, so we have strong relationships with all the major game publishers and we've been talking to them before launch, through launch, and now. We're all in the same space. We all want a next-generation console that really does define a new form of gameplay and entertainment; we also want the largest base of users that make that an attractive platform for developers. Because that lets us bring more games. And in that balance, I think we both arrived at 'this is the right decision at this time.'"

So you don't think [removing Kinect] is going to fragment the audience in any kind of potential negative way?

YM: "No, I don't. Certainly some gamers are Kinect-focused, say Kinect Sports Rivals, Dance Central*. So obviously, those games do want a Kinect on every box. But any of the other games, they work just fine with or without a Kinect, and they have experiences that allow them to be better if your Kinect is there and functioning, but work fine standalone."

*Ed. Note: Harmonix has not announced a new Dance Central game for Xbox One. We're following up with Microsoft and Harmonix about this.

Kinect Sports Rivals
Kinect Sports Rivals

Are you going to offer any kind of ambassador program or anything like that for people who paid $500 for a system right out of the gate...or is that kind of the risk you run if you're an early adopter?

YM: "Part of what we're trying to do is really deliver value for those early purchasers, and that's part of what we're doing with some of the Games with Gold value offer that we've brought. One of the things that we did is we're bring an extra [free] game to Xbox 360. So we're always trying to reward our best fans with more services."

I was also reading the Xbox Wire post that 80 percent of Xbox One owners actively use Kinect, so this move appears to be appeasing to the 20 percent. Do you think you're in danger of becoming too beholden to your fans and not staying with your original vision?

YM: "One thing I disagree on...this isn't in response to the 20 percent. What this is responding to is more choice to customers who maybe can't afford to come out and get an Xbox One all at once, but they want to get there right away. So this is a way to say 'I can get one for $399 and then later, when I'm able, I can then go out and purchase a Kinect accessory.'"

Going into the holiday, we're now going to have two major boxes that are presumably going to be at the same price point. What kind of battle do you think this sets up now that things are different than they were last year?

YM: "We really like the value proposition and choice we're bringing to gamers, because we think it's differentiated in the following ways: 1) we're providing a more complete games+entertainment experience [than the competition]. We're the only device that can be an input 1, that can do live live TV, that can snap and do two things at once. We can do all that with our $399 offering. The second thing is it's going to be all about the games. So who's got the best games lineup? We really loved our competitive position with the first holiday, which I think most would say we had a stronger games lineup [than the competition].

I'm really excited about E3; cautiously optimistic that we'll have the value proposition that is also a very strong, if not the strongest, games lineup for the second holiday. And then finally, the thing that has also differentiated Xbox One has been Xbox Live Gold, and that great multiplayer experience that we're going to continue to invest in; some of it's with the new announcements we're making today, and some of it with the continued best-in-class Smartmatch experience. Those are the things that we think will stack up, so we love that comparison."

Already put up both my Xbox Ones for sale. I have no use for this lying, bass ackwards, change your mind more often than a kid in a toy store looking for a birthday present POS company. Been primarily Xbox user since the original but, I'm so angry with these jerks, not only am I no longer using the X1 as my primary console, I won't be using it at all. Nobody I know has bought one. Everyone is going PS4. I hate the PS controller and online service but, I'll make do. At least I know what direction Sony is going in. MS management couldn't buy a clue!

With the previous console war (360 vs PS3) a lot of us have learned that it is ill-advised to jump on either console at launch. I own both previous systems and have no "fanboy-ism" toward either one. I purchased the 360 at launch and soon realized how little games they offered and of those games, none were really worth buying but I did so that I actually had something to play. I had equally as many games on both systems. Launch consoles are never what they are supposed to be. I think it's safe to say that NEITHER current/next gen system had a launch like the developers were anticipating. Neither system was without it's "bugs." Launch consoles have not given developers enough time to truly realize how to optimize each system's hardware. The infrastructure (especially on PS3) for online play was shaky at best.

With age comes wisdom and I, and many other ppl, have realized that it's just not a wise decision to by a console at launch. Developers are always in a 1-up battle to see who can have the biggest, baddest product the soonest. This, inevitably, comes at a cost. I am personally waiting for the holiday push when game developers will start releasing more of their top-notch titles. I will wait until they have fixed a majority of their bugs. And most importantly, I will wait until they have a REAL price drop. I am not willing to throw away $400 or more on a buggy console. I am willing to wait until some of the power of each system is realized by game developers and each company learns how to value it's buyers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I was ready for next gen years ago; I couldn't wait any longer (purchased X1 at launch). I have no issues with that choice either; I've logged hundreds, upon hundreds of hours between BF4, AC4, DR3, Titanfall, TRD, and Thief... and I'm not even remotely bored yet. X1 was never "buggy"; they have made some user feed back patches to tighten the overall experience, but the system has been great out of the box.

I can say the 360 is nothing like the X1 in terms of overall performance... The X1 is lighting quick, and I believe the kinect is worth having from a navigational stand point. The videos aren't exaggerating how fast this device works... I switch from games to achievements, to tv, to apps (ect), all by voice, and all instantly without buttons or sifting through navigational screens. The snap feature is pretty cool as well. I've watched UFC prelims in the snapped box, while playing BF4 on many occasions (for example). I often switch from achievements to game, while matches are being prepared... it flips on a dime, and doesn't disturb game play. It's really pretty awesome in my opinion.

That doesn't even reflect the game play advancements (with more NPCs and players, higher graphics, and bigger maps, etc)... I've had a sh*t ton of fun, and couldn't have imagined waiting.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well, that is definitely good to hear. I will still be waiting for an actual "price drop" and/or more games to come out. I wasn't referring to this gen being the same as last as far as performance, for the record. And for me, I only have time to wait. I work 52+ hours a week and have a second child on the way.....free time is at a premium these days. I definitely will be looking to get one or both of the systems in the near future. What will make the difference for me is how the games PLAY. Graphics are nice, load times can be tedious, and what-have-you, but I care more about how FUN games are and how comfortable the controllers are. Having had both previous systems I can say, for me, the 360 controller was far more comfortable to use for extended periods of time over the PS3's. That being said, I know both controllers have seen vast improvements, so unit I can get my hands on both and give them a real test, I am still up in the air on either of them. I do like a LOT of the features that the X1 offers, especially since I cut the cable about 8 months ago. Features like the one you mentioned, Microsofts contract with ESPN and the NFL, and several others are great. By no means does Microsoft do everything right.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I totally get it, and at this point, it doesn't hurt to continue assessment. Both are likely to drop $50 by Christmas, or include bundle packs around that time (virtually dropping to $340.00). And many of the games (today) will be offered at discounted prices (which is a plus).

Good gaming to you

I have the $500 system. I also paid full price for Titanfall. I'm out $560 bucks.

Since purchasing the system in January I've discovered that Microsoft hardware does not perform as well as the PS4 (I knew the specs were better on PS4 but had no idea we would be getting new releases at lower resolutions), the Kinect is practically useless (I've long ago stopped talking to my Xbox), and that if I had only waited until just after Titanfall's launch I could have saved myself $110 bucks.

As good as Titanfall is (and I do really like Titanfall), I'm starting to wonder if it was all worth it. Since I've already wasted all that money I'm starting to think maybe I should just buy the PS4 after all and switch over to being a Sony customer who buys multiplatform titles on PS4 and reserves the Xbox One for exclusives (a role my PS3 has played to my 360 for years).

This much buyers remorse is NOT a good thing, Microsoft. Not a good thing for you at all ...

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm 100% the opposite. XBOX ONE has the better online experience, far stronger network infrastructure, more AAA titles, better features, and more apps. PS4 has second son, and that's it for me (right now). I'm primarily an online gamer though, so that also affects my point of view.

Arguing resolution is irrelevant; 90% of people have no idea where to sit in relation to their TV size, distance, and resolution offering.... and thus, 90% of people are not getting the full resolution of their TV's. Hell 90% of the living rooms are not designed to optimize your resolution experience. The average screen (50" in the living room) requires your eyes (not couch) to be exactly 6.5' from the tv to optimize 1080p. With the average living room (especially in the last ten years with open floor plans becoming a main stay), this simply isn't the case for most people... more or less, most people sit about 8 to 9 feet (eye to screen) from their tvs, at which you can barely perceive higher than a 720p resolution. The difference people are actually seeing is so small that it's become a moot point... that's proven in the fact that no one realized that KZ4 wasn't actually 1080p (not finding out until months after release). Resolution is a moot point.

I'm not saying X1 is better, nor am I saying PS4 is better... both have their advantages and place in the market... PS4 is a more powerful machine (albeit not by that much). PS4 is also capable of more flops (higher graphics), though history shows we'll only see this by first party devs towards the end of the console cycle. PS4 is also known for having better story campaigns and single player exclusives. XBOX is the better online system; better network infrastructure (by leaps and bounds), better GUI, more apps, more features... it's the better all in one gaming console. It has more AAA titles than PS4 (as of the moment), and is more geared to online gaming. Pick the one that suites you most... and if you really love gaming, you'll pick both..

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I'm with you... PS4 will have good exclusives through the years, and that'll be my use of the machine. But XBOX ONE will have the same, plus a better online and overall experience. X1 is my primary machine for all multiplatform titles, with the exception of Destiny (in which I'm kind of being strong armed to buy on PS4 when released). I'm 100% digital this time around, so I like having as much on the X1 as possible (flipping through my catalog of games/apps/tv on one machine through voice, with snap features, etc).

Its undoubtedly a good move to drop the mandatory Kinect (choice is always good)

But surely it cant be called a price drop - a price drop would be getting the same goods for a lesser price

Love the way they are still defending the kinect, its a pointless gimmick that hardly works, and as for the 120 commands a month, most people have at least 2 gaming sessions a day,so they turn the thing on and off twice, woohoo people dont love it they arnt even using it beyond turning their console on and off.

Disingenuous and insulting at the same time. I like being called a poor piece of trash by a man attempting to sell me a watered down $400 Netflix player. He has all of the salesmanship and candor of an STD clinic offering "free delicious samples" at the door.

We really believe in Kinect, people use it, people love it, developers love it, that's why we're dropping it from the box since so many people have been asking for an Xbox that comes without one.

That's quite some spin. I think it's a mistake. When you take it out of the box, that tells developers that they don't need to use it because not everyone has it, and it won't be supported. There's no way they can make Kinect relevant if they leave it out of the box. Then again, Kinect won't make itself relevant on its own, which seems to be what Microsoft had been hoping up to this point.

Phil Spencer explained it better to Game Informer:

Spencer tells us that the this decision was about giving consumers choice, and that the execution is possible because of a decision made in 2013. “When we made the decision last summer that you could run with Kinect unplugged, that was a fundamental decision for the program,” he says. “There was a different leadership team in place, but that discussion led us to think about a console where Kinect was not required to be plugged in at all times. You can roll back to that decision and it enables what we’re announcing this morning.”

People say there's no real reason to own Kinect. How about for Skype, face recognition login, Twitch, etc.? Plenty of people are buying the PS4 camera for Twitch/Ustream even though no games support it.
