Xbox One Controller's Wireless PC Adapter Coming This Month

Use your Xbox One controller on PC without a USB cable.

The adapter that allows Xbox One controllers to be used wirelessly with PCs and tablets is coming later this month, Microsoft has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

A listing for the dongle, officially known as the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, references a release date of October 20 on the official Xbox website. Confusingly, GameStop and Amazon listings offer two separate dates--October 27 and November 3, respectively.

Microsoft confirmed with GameSpot that October 20 is the official release date, though at this point it remains unclear where you'll be able to purchase it on that day.

"[W]e can confirm the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, announced earlier this year, will release on Oct. 20 in most markets," the company said in a statement today. "We look forward to sharing more details soon."

The $25 adapter was first revealed at this year's GDC, and was then confirmed for a release this fall at E3. Until now, the only official way to use an Xbox One controller on PC was by connecting it with a micro-USB cable.

That will remain the only option for some PC and tablet owners, as the new wireless adapter requires Windows 10. The new operating system is a free upgrade right now for Windows 7 and 8 users, but while adoption has been strong, there are invariably going to be those who aren't up-to-date and thus will be unable to use the adapter.

@al_is_here: Why does it have to be the size of the intel computing stick (a computer) its a wireless adapter. I have 1 wireless adapter for my speakers, mouse, and keyboard and its about the size of a toenail clipping with a usb sticking out. and thats 5Ghz frequency, pretty sure unless this thing is broadcasting to aliens in deep space, it can be just as small as a normal wireless transmitter

Must have windows 10... Pass!!

They could have easily made this compatible with other windows platforms.

They really want everyone having their 'free' win 10 don't they.

Someone will make some software to use this with win 7 soon enough....

Wow only for windows 10?

That really sucks.

I know a lot of people who use Hyperspin that have been waiting for this thing to come out. A lot of them only use Windows 7 because it offers so much more in terms of program compatibility...

There's no reason they couldn't have made this work with Windows 7 & 8...

Ohh yeah... $$$$$$

Nothing wrong with upgrading to Windows 10, don't know why people are complaining "Oh! Windows 10 required! eh! No thanks, I stick to Windows 7!" Windows 10 is a free upgrading for the next 10 months, so why the refusal and moaning?!?!!? It requires software you can get for free. You all be using Windows 10 in the foreseeable future so get over it and move on. Geez, some people are never happy with a free lunch.

@malachi: Well It's just that some people had issues with windows 10 (Takes too long to boot up, crashes etc.. etc)And some people just like the old look and feel of windows 7....People will eventually think of upgrading.

How people can complain about the low cost of a real physical item that actually performs a task and then turn around and spend hundreds of dollars on virtual digital content online just to delete it or not have access to it when servers are down is a cruel irony on the universe.

how special do you feel now...now that u can see through the BS, now have another look at the console :) and yes everything they have "updated" untill now, yes all the backpeddling drm, backward compatible, drop the kinect, arcade games transfer over, all could of been done out of the box, but no, ms has just stalled the industry by 2 years and more, i wonder where we would of been now if they didnt keep pulling these rubbish stunts on us.

@hotwog21: stalled the industry? what do any of the things you mentioned have to do with the rest of the industry? sounds like you're stating that you would rather have waited another 2 years for the console to be released.

what does them offering a PC wireless adapter have to do with the console industry anyway? it took even longer for the 360 to release a PC compatible wireless gamepad adapter. and it took over a year for the price + a gamepad to even be worth it.

@jwilliamson69: THAT IS DEFINITELY not true.

if Amazon is not going to have it available for sale until November they would not post a note on your account telling you that you can get it somewhere else sooner.

Think I'll stick with the 360 controller then.

I have no need or desire to move from Windows 7 just yet, but thanks though.

O_O very expensive to be honest. However more input options for PC gamers is always a good thing. However you can get a cheap bluetooth USB dongle and use a PS4 controller to play PC games and that works on a lot more OS's including Mac's.

lol 25 dollars. my xbox 360 usb receiver cost me around 10 dollars, why are these so much more? plus my adapter works in windows xp, 7, 8 and 10.

How can you charge more for something that only works in windows 10? this makes no sense

@Yams1980: when the Wireless 360 Gamepad for Windows set was first released it was over ~$60. almost a year later they offered the dongle alone for ~$25. over another year or so later the dongle dropped down to ~$10.

it's Microsoft. this is just another easy way to "force" some more users to upgrade to Windows 10. and there's really no reason not to unless you think you're protesting something by refusing the upgrade.

@elessarGObonzo: im not actually protesting upgrading. I just wish it was a stable and fast OS. But its not. I've tried to upgrade a desktop pc, a laptop, a tablet and an intel atom mini pc. I had a combination of lockups, slow performance and a lot of driver problems on all the devices. The worst was on my desktop pc, it was getting crashes and rebooting everytime i was running my security monitoring software... which ran perfectly on windows 7 somewhat on windows 8. Many of my games ran terribly on it also.

This OS is not in good shape. I reminds me of the problems i had with windows 95. Windows Vista was much more stable than windows 10. So far i've defaulted all back to windows 7 on my main pcs and laptop, and windows 8 on my tablets because that was their default OS and can't put windows 7 on them.

Im sure some people have had some flawless performance and stability, but i've wasted hundreds of hours with it and been nothing but frustrated. Microsoft should never have released windows 8 and windows 10 is even more a failure than windows 8. They can force people all they want to use it and i know eventually i'll have to install and setup a dual boot for it to at least play dx12 games and hopefully by then they have fix all the problems i had with it.

@Yams1980: maybe you have programs or versions of them that haven't been updated but it is a very stable and faster OS compared to previous Windows iterations. even without "quick boot" options it takes ~10secs to post and load, <30 secs for all of my startup programs to be fully loaded and profiles running. 7 took >30secs to load, ~30sec for startup programs to load and another 30sec - 1min for fan & GPU profiles to load = <=90sec on 7 for the same <30sec load on 10.

have never suffered a blue screen, lockup, or system crash since before the last few Tech Preview builds. all USB and bluetooth devices function perfectly. all my chipset and other hardware drivers were available upon build 10240's release. you can't generalize problems across the entire operating system because you had incompatible hardware or hadn't upgraded properly.

games also function better with faster load times and even 5-10% more fps in more modern titles than 7 or 8 did. and we're not even factoring in when game's are actually developed for DX12 yet.

and why should 8 have never been released? maybe should have been held back until 8.1 was finished but 8.1 was also better than 7 in terms of performance. just lacked some of the customizable aspects people had gotten used to over 98, XP, & 7. we'll just ignore Vista, that one should've actually been skipped.

@R4gn4r0k: does the One gamepad not use AA batteries? definitely will not be upgrading if not.

rechargeable AA & AAA are very cheap. i have about 40 AA for all my remotes, gamepads, and work flashlights. the 360 wireless gamepad with a good set of Powerex gets about 60hrs of use.

I'll probably pick this up when both my 360 controllers die. I'd rather not have to wrestle with my Xbox One and PC every time I want to re-sync to a different device.

Since Windows 10 refuses to stop annoying me on Windows 7 Windows Update, it'll be inevitable that one day I'll wake up and have Win 10 anyways. I've rooted this whole PC, and it just keeps coming back. Since I have a Win 10 tablet, I actually don't mind Win 10. I just don't want my Windows 7 program installs getting fubar'd like other people I know.

@Setzera: Yup. I tried to install Win 10 and there was some issue with the latest nVidia drivers, so all I got was a black desktop with a cursor and no way to fix it, and I tried everything. I had to do a clean reinstallation of Windows 7.

@EcksTheory: could've easily been fixed is true. they've had working AMD & Nvidia drivers since the first iterations of the Tech Preview, many months before 10 was actually released. worked/s great with my 770 and with my 290X.

@Setzera: the popup about Windows 10 on earlier versions is caused by a Windows 7/8 update you installed. you have to look up which exactly it was and uninstall that particular update. but it will keep happening if you don't turn off Windows Update or choose to ignore that particular one in the future.

@EcksTheory: No, I said I tried everything. The black screen came up even in safe mode, I couldn't even get rid of the nVidia driver to reinstall it because I couldn't see anything, and for some reason going back to the original Windows version didn't work... and I wasn't too happy losing everything I had on my computer.

@jj2112: if it's an Intel setup or an AMD APU, you have onboard graphics built into your CPU. could've easily moved the display cable to that separate adapter to work through the issue. and using Safe Mode does not use any installed drivers, it defaults to Microsoft's generic drivers just for that purpose. it was obviously a different problem than you're suggesting.

@elessarGObonzo: I know, but not even Support could find out what the problem was. It's a laptop, so I couldn't connect the cable to the other adapter. I'm just warning people with an nVidia GPU, I know that it won't affect everyone but I'm aware that it was a problem for some people, some could fix it through Task Manager or other workarounds but I couldn't. It's the only time I've had problems with my laptop.

@jj2112: strange. you never know though. could've even been some other component not compatible with drivers Windows 10 was trying to use that was effecting the display output. should see if the laptop manufacturer has an "upgrade to 10" option so they will have tested and proved it working if you feel like trying again later.

@EcksTheory: Some people don't want to deal with the hassle. "easily" is subjective, especially when you consider the time factor.

Everybody will eventually get around to it, but it can be annoying for some.

Requiring windows 10 operating system only is a little lame, good OS but enforcing that kinda of requirement is a little douchy . The dongle is a whole lot smaller then the xbox 360 wireless pc dongle.

They don't want anyone left on Win 7 and 8, they want everyone on Win10.

@R4gn4r0k: I own 3 desktops pc, (work, Gaming, HTPC), one laptop, and a chromebook tablet like thing. I upgraded to win 7 on my laptop - for the most part works fine. MY work computer has adobe products cs4 - illustrator, indesign, photoshop, and turbo tax, quark, and a few others) I cannot upgrade to windows 7 just yet as my work computer has programs that only work with 7 or as I have it configured at the moment including my Fiery Rips.

MY gaming computer has tons of games, that a few will not work on windows ten just yet, and a few questionable programs related to torrents, and microsoft office including publisher. I mean I appreciate the fine work windows has done with 10, esp after the poor work performer win8. But some programs have a few hiccups at the moment with 10 that I cannot take the risk or downtime for now in upgrading to 10.

Still though you and I both know the drivers to run a controller can run on just about any OS and the fact the drivers will only work with win10 at the moment is more incentive to get people to move over. That is all fine and shit, but why not make it available to all win os - and those that buy the adapter and have windows 10 installed they can a few bucks off in the windows store or something.

@jenovaschilld: what games have you tried don't work with Windows 10?

the only 1 i've found out of the 180 or so i have installed is Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War because it requires Games for Windows Live which is not available anymore. many that used to use it are offering patches to switch to Xbox Live through Windows 10 though.

@jenovaschilld: I have also not made the jump to Win10 yet. I have a desktop PC for gaming running Win 7 (which is sheer perfection afaik). And a laptop running Win8.1.

I haven't upgraded to Win 10 partly because I'm lazy. But for the biggest part because Win10 seems more closed than previous OS and seems like DRM at times... Otherwise it seems like a fine OS.

MS giving away Win10 for free as well as all their gaming stuff on PC now being WIn 10 exclusive has one goal: they want everyone on Win10 and nobody using Win 7-8.

Halo Wars 2 is a title I'm looking forward to... But it's Win10 exclusive >:(
