If you find one, buy it before it's gone, Microsoft advises.

Microsoft's Xbox One Elite controller launched in October alongside Halo 5: Guardians--and it's been a hot item ever since. The initial allocation sold through quickly, and every time Microsoft can replenish stock, the controllers seem to fly off the shelves. That's what Xbox boss Phil Spencer said recently on Twitter.

Responding to a fan on Twitter who was able to find an Elite controller, Spencer said, "I'm glad you found one. We keep shipping more in but they sell out instantly."

The unique controller, which carries a premium $150 price tag, is currently completely sold out at Microsoft's own online store, as well as at GameStop, Target, Amazon, and Best Buy.

There is another way to get your hands on an Elite controller. You can buy the Xbox One Elite model that launched in November; it comes with a 1 TB console and the unique, transforming controller. And with Microsoft's recent $50 price cut on all Xbox One systems, you can get it for $450 instead of $500.

In November, Microsoft warned that Elite controller supply "may be limited through November." Later that month, the company said demand for the controller "exceeded our planning."

For more on the Elite controller, check out GameSpot's hands-on impressions in the video above.

That's disappointing...

I was really hoping for a significant price drop.

I'm also waiting for someone to confirm or deny that the extra paddles in the back register as completely separate buttons in the PC program Xpadder.

You know things are bad when the controller is doing better than the console.

@jimmyjimmyjim: Not only does that comment have no basis (the console is doing really well), but it also makes no sense. The controller is for the console. If it is doing well, the console (by default) is doing well. Goodbye.

@Scarshi: To begin a pun is not the same as sarcasm, nor was the original comment either of those, so you might want to edit your first sentence. Back to topic, my comment has the basis of logic. Name-calling (ass) is for children who want to get under the skin of someone while having nothing of substance to add.

So no one in this thread ever heard of a scuf.? Is this really the first time you have seen a 150 controller. You do know they make them for ps4 xb1 and other platforms. Hell you can send yours in and have it customized for like 80 bucks.

Yeah that's because the One controller is awful. The buttons and sticks are too sensitive, and the thumbsticks too small. You can get a Cronusmax for 60 bucks and use your 360 controller. 150 is nuts.

This article is funny. My gamestop only ever got two controllers since launch. They told that MS put a limit per on how many they can get. Sounds like MS is slacking on production.

@fogirony: I guess they initially thought that it wouldn't sell as well as they are so they limited production to save overhead.

@jerjef: true... can always make money on fools... remember them people on ebay buying the box for a console for 800 bucks???

...this is forced "demand".

Allow me to shed some light. This particular Best Buy is the closest one for a while, and so it has a customer base of nearly 20,000 people with their only competition being Wal-Mart and my own store.

Even this Best Buy got only 5 controllers, months ago, and has not receieved ANY new shipments since the xb1 elite controller released.... this is itself the trend nationally. Very low supply. Some stores have sold out, of the few they recieved only recently. This BB here has 3 of those 5 still. That they are selling like hotcakes is a lie, and using the terms "sold-out" is purely misleading.

Are we really supposed to beleive, all evidence aside, that their convoluted overpriced controller is selling better than their console?

@lonesamurai1: that there is little demand for xbox, only fanboys, or the ignorant who make a purchase because they bought 6 if them last gen and were ok with that, buy this gen. Once you show them (not the fanatics) the truths and let them decide being informed they drop that xbox like its the plague....

And no... as a pc gamer myself this overpriced controller for mutant hands is absurd, especially with cheaper and better options. You could have put that money towards an actual upgrade....

@lonesamurai1: nah, pc ma , there is always room for more. Better/more ram? Better newer cpu? Extra gfx cards and a larger psu to supply them for quad sli? Mobo upgrades? Storage upgrades to ssd, and use most of your old hdd to make a massive media bank for your home server? There is always something...

@Mirimon78: Funny thing is the stores I check like BB are out of stock locally and online. The limited supply is probably the end result of limited production and unexpectedly high sales, just like what happened to the PS4 at launch.

The controller selling better than the console has to do with it also working on PCs.

@jerjef: What sales numbers are you referencing that proves that it is selling better than the console? That is completely false and quite frankly makes no sense.

@Furwings: My PS4 controller lasts for approximately 5 to 7 hours under steady continuous use with rumble on and then requires roughly the same amount of time to recharge via USB. My Xbox One controller, equipped with two NiMH rechargeables, lasts for around 38 to 42 hours under the same usage conditions (i.e. all week long) and then takes anywhere from 8 to 10 hours to recharge.

Given a choice, I much prefer the latter. Since I always have a few others fully charged up and ready to go, I never have to deal with any cables and can stay 100% wireless at all times. And given how long they'll last, I have all the time in the world to throw the dead ones onto the recharger, like when I take a regularly scheduled break or go to bed. Fully charged batteries are always within reach of my chair and based on my own experience it takes no longer to swap dead ones out than it does to plug in a USB cable.

I already owned a bunch of NiMH batteries prior to buying my Xbox One (some were for my Xbox 360, others for various remotes, a toothbrush, a clock, and so on) so I didn't really have to go out of my way in that respect. Financially speaking NiMH's are a far superior investment over alkaline batteries, especially if you can grab some good LSD ones while they're on sale. I own mostly Duracells and Eneloops and haven't had to throw a single one into the garbage since I began using them, which was around 2008 or so IIRC.

The PS4 is the better console IMHO, but only by a slim margin. The better controller though? That award goes to Microsoft. My only gripe is the Xbox One's A button. I own two (a must for Diablo 3) and both suffer from this annoying problem where pressing the A button either doesn't register being pressed, or registers one press as two. It drives me up the wall at times too, like when trying to create a new game save in Fallout 4. I usually end up over-writing a save I really didn't want to! Updating the firmware did help slightly, but didn't fix this problem entirely. This is the number one reason why I'll be buying the new elite controller lol.

TL;DR = I'm buying the Elite controller and I prefer Microsoft's over Sony's for the reasons outlined above. ;-)

@jerjef : Yeah what the hell right? I mean if I've already dropped $180 (Canadian) on a controller what's $30 more on a rechargeable battery pack that should've been included in EVERY XB1 controller since launch right?

@Furwings: Well they could've put a crappy rechargeable battery in every controller like Sony did that only lasts an hour forcing the owner to buy a better one online and then dismantle it to replace it. Kinda like how Sony forces their owners to backup and replace the internal when they run out of space as opposed to supporting external drives.

@jerjef: you need a new watch.. 30 hours a charge, but, if you really want to do something to improve it, you can replace the pack completely for 5 bucks and get a much greater battery at thw same time... hm.. 5 bucks is less than 30?

Fyi, any single use will outlast a rechargeable, on a single use... but then you need a new one.....

He is right... should have had play n charge day 1 as a standard feature, especially if they want to compete...

@jerjef: bad chargun g techniques, or gen1 product failure. Like the stiffer pafs on the sticks of newer series ds4, the battery is better.

Rumble is a major factor this time because it is dynamic, and because they added more motors than the ds3.

Follow proper charging, and if its simply no longer holds a charge swap the pack for 5 bucks, it gives 60+ hours per charge and really does it well..

@jerjef: An hour? It's around 7 hours playing time with the rumble off. I agree an external option for hd would be nice but the internal literally takes less than 5 minutes.
