Xbox One Gets 8 New Original Xbox Backwards Compatible Games

Morrowind, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and more are now available.

It's been a long wait, but the second round of original Xbox backwards compatible games have finally arrived on Xbox One. Eight more classic Xbox titles are now playable on Microsoft's current-gen console, with another batch set to follow next week.

This week sees the arrival of some of the original Xbox's most beloved games. In addition to Bethesda's acclaimed RPG The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Xbox One owners can now play the Conker's Bad Fur Day remake, Conker: Live & Reloaded; Sega's acclaimed rail shooter, Panzer Dragoon Orta; BioWare's martial arts RPG, Jade Empire; the snowboarding game SSX 3; the first-person action game Breakdown; the time-bending platformer Blinx: The Time Sweeper; and the hack-and-slash game Hunter: The Reckoning.

Now Playing: New Original Xbox Backwards Compatible Games

If you still own the disc for any of these titles, you can pop it into your Xbox One and begin playing. The games are also available for purchase digitally from the Xbox Store. Most of them retail for US $10 / £9 / AU $14.95, while Morrowind and Hunter: The Reckoning are US $15 / £12 / AU $19.95 apiece.

This is only the first wave of original Xbox games coming to Xbox One this month. Next week, Microsoft is adding another 11 titles to the backwards compatible library, including Destroy All Humans, MX Unleashed, Full Spectrum Warrior, and an assortment of Star Wars games such as Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and Knights of the Old Republic II. You can find the full list of this month's original Xbox BC titles below.

Microsoft first announced backwards compatibility support for original Xbox games at E3 2017, although the company said those would be added much less frequently than 360 titles. The initial batch of original Xbox BC games arrived back in October and consisted of 13 titles, including Black, Psychonauts, Prince of Persia, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. You can see the full list of Xbox One BC games here.

Bought Morrowind from the digital store, used to play the hell out of it on XBox. Looks better and the performance improvement is amazing on the X. Jade Empire another great game will have to revisit.

Look, this is a great feature, don't get me wrong, and it's awesome that so many people in the comments get a lot of value from it. But it is really sad as a gamer when I come on this site and see the industry renting and raving about this Nintendo game or rumor, out this PlayStation exclusive or what have you. And all Microsoft ever has is......more old games to play on your new console.

At first it was funny, then I just ignored it, to each their own and all that. Now it's just sad.

Microsoft really doesn't deserve the fans it has.

@Jdzspace: microsoft put of sea of thieves like 2 weeks ago they also jist put out forza 7 not to long ago and cuphead and they have more stuff coming this year. Sony has put out nothing this year just god of war and a remaster of a 10+ year old game. I have a feeling e3,will be new, games from MS and sony showing the same, stuff they been showing forever and as always maybe a hand full of new games that are 10 years away. I'm enjoying all t he games I missed and now I get,to play them in 4k on my one x. I am playing god of war now but aftee that I will go back,to,the feature rich xboxone x

@emptycow718: Sea of thieves is garbage beta mode game. Cuphead was a while ago. Sony has released 5 really high quality games in the last 12 months, with a minimum of 2 more coming in the next 4 months, it's not comparable. It's cool to have both, but one is about great games, the other is about services.

@Jdzspace: the service microsoft is selling is giving you the ability to play more games and play games in a better quality. Sony fanboys are silly acting like " old games don't matter " yet one of the most loved games of the moment is a remaster of a ps2. game. I get remasters on the xboxone x every week sometimes 10 in one day. Maybe ms should sell the 4k red dead redemption and pull a sony

@emptycow718: old games do matter, but nobody spent $500+ to play old games with a new coat of paint. Old games are fine, but I'm sorry if you are trying too compare playing old games to new experiences, you lose that argument 100 times out of 100

@Jdzspace: people paid the $500 to play everything in a better quality that means older game and newer games and thats what they are getting. Gta 6 4k red dead 2 4k etc look at hell, blade on ps4 pro vs xboxone x is almost night and day the ps4 pro is doing 900p sub 50 fps and the one x is doing dynamic 4k with more detail at a almost solid 60fps thats why people buy the one x that and you get a uhd player

@emptycow718: not really. You can play those same games on PC in higher quality. And you can't play the best games of the generation on it either. I'm sorry, but what you said isn't true

Can't play horizon zero down in higher quality, or God of war.

So if you spend $500 to play everything in higher quality, you messed up.

You can play some games in higher quality, but you don't have access to the highest quality games.

Not a good trade off

@emptycow718: but you can do the same thing on the pro and with psnow.

I won't say psnow is better, because it's not.

But there is nothing you CAN'T play in high quality on either console.

Is it higher on the one x, yes it is.

But again, you are trading off playing more older games in marginally better quality with having genre and generation defining masterpieces and constant game of the year winners.

Again, your not winning that argument which is why Microsoft is so far behind Sony and Nintendo on pace to pass them up by the end of the year.

@Jdzspace: cuphead was at the end of 2017. sony has put out nothing but a racer thats garbage compared to forza 7 This year sony has a remaster and god of war after that we have spider man the batman clone and detroit the point and click game. Crack down 3 will have replay value for along time. the stuff sony is putting out is over and done in 2 days max. I'm playing. God of war now its good but its mostly a boat /walking sim.

@emptycow718: it's a good thing nobody cares about a racing game. And cuphead is what it is, but it's a niche title at best. Equivalent to Yakuza 6. And Yakuza isn't a remaster, at the end of the day. Sony sells great varied gaming experiences, Microsoft sells services and emulation.

Different strokes for different folks, but Sony for gaming is still unmatched.

@Jdzspace: Yakuza 6 plays like a ps2 game and the reviews for that game are poor. I have played Yakuza. Before its not a AAA game it plays like a budget title. Microsoft has cuphead, sea of thieves, forza 7,pubg ,soon crackdown 3 and state of decay 2 all in the last 7 months all not on ps4 I'm not even counting the remasters on one x conker 4k,red dead redemption 4k etc but xbox owners should want a ps4 to play god of war a game thats Basically ryse with a slightly different combat system and, less combat. God of war is a walking / boating SIM

Meanwhile, PS4 has Yakuza 6 and God of War this week. Backwards compatibility is convenient and all but Microsoft hasn't given me a real reason to turn on my XBone in over a year. Really hoping Crackdown 3 turns out well since that's the only MS exclusive I even have on my radar.

Will definitely be buying a few of these tomorrow. Am I the only one sad not to see MechAssault on backward compatible yet? Anyways, looking forward to playing some original battlefront 1 & 2. Here's to hoping MechAssault makes the line up soon. This is a big reason I bought an xbox. Their backward compatibility list is pretty sweet.

Conker: Live & Reloaded is an excellent game even for today.

It Easily puts games like Knack or Ratchet-Clank to shame... I am so excited.

@michellebennet: Dunno if I agree with that replayed it last year and it still had 2001 game design choices that didn't age well.

I think R&C has aged better (from 2 onward) from a gameplay and design perspective.

@macrazy98: I don't have either disc myself to check, but I've read online that no matter whether you insert the standard "Morrowind" or the Game of the Year Edition, it downloads the GotY version with the DLC.

@lionheartssj1: Right.?. I was sure Disney wouldn't want to undercut last year's BF2 so this is a welcome surprise. Never mind the fact Disney seems to want to ignore anything too prequel content heavy in the past so it can die. I was just sure those old Battlefront games would never see life on a modern console again.

@mariokart64fan: Especially considering we're not getting it in widescreen. If the graphics don't bother anyone, save the $10 you would spend on Live and Reloaded and get Rare Replay. You get almost all the other great N64 games from Rareware as well. Almost.

We got some good ones here. Full Spectrum Warrior was, at the time, a good military sim "Shit!, we got an RPG!"

It goes without saying that MorrowWind is excellent and Mercenaries was really fun. I hope they make Mercs 3 for the current gen.

I really hope that at some point I see a list like this with Def Jam: Fight For NY listed :)

That's interesting. If I was in the least interested in getting an Xbone this sure would help convince me. Too bad it's not enough of a threat to Sony for them to consider adding backwards compatibility as well.

@Atzenkiller: I wish it was. Sony pisses me off this gen. $20 for FFVII when it was $8 on PS3. Oh, but it's HD. That's great. Now we can see how crappy it looks in high definition. Like we care. I'd love for my digital PS One games to be on the PS4.

@deakenblack: Plus that is only one part of the game as SE is splitting it up into several releases as I recall. Also I don't think you can put the blame on SONY for that one, as much as I would like to. SONY isn't helping with this nor do I think this is a true exclusive either - it hasn't been announced that way and SONY always makes sure you know that it is their exclusive that will not be available on other systems as they did with Street Fighter V and Spider-Man. I can almost guarantee this will be as exclusive as No Man's Sky and Crash Bandicoot collection were.

Impressed with Morrowind on Xbone, it looks sharp and seems to run at an unlocked framerate, feels close to 60fps most of the time

Though the draw distance isn't changed, there's still fog everywhere and you can't see anything more than 20 feet away

@Spartan_418: It's because they don't actually touch the original code. It's a pretty cool emulation technique they use where the Xbox one X can automatically apply enhancements without touching game code.

@deviltaz35: Yes. My hope had been that the draw distance was limited by the power of the Original Xbox, that it was a hardware thing rather than the game code limiting it to a specific distance, but of course that doesn't seem to be the case
