Xbox One Likely Won't Be Microsoft's Last Console, Exec Says

The Xbox One most likely will not be the last console from Microsoft. That's according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who was asked in a new interview if he foresees a day when Xbox exists as an app, storefront, or brand only instead of an actual piece of hardware.

"No," Spencer told The Verge. "I fully expect that you'll see another console from us. Our best customers are Xbox console customers, and I want to keep those people engaged both on the Xbox One and anything we might do in the future. I'm 100 percent committed to that."

He added: "I don't want to dilute what the Xbox console customer feels. I want to expand what we're able to do for more customers."

The Verge also spoke with Xbox executive Shannon Loftis about the future of gaming at Microsoft. Going forward, she said one of Microsoft's goals is to make gaming "more inclusive across the board."

In addition to controller-centric games, Loftis says Microsoft is exploring "as many ways to make all of our experiences relevant across all of our platforms as we possibly can."

One potential are of future growth for Microsoft in the gaming space is the augmented reality headset HoloLens. Microsoft has already created a series of tech demos, including one for Minecraft. The headset has definite potential for gaming, according to Spencer.

Don't expect the Xbox One's successor anytime soon, however. If typical console cycle lifecycle schedules hold up, it could be years and years before we start to hear about what's next.
