26-year-old Charlie Pulbrook was the first person in the UK to buy an Xbox One. Will he regret spending that extra £30?

Microsoft will cut the price of the Xbox One in UK to £399.99 from February 28, the company has announced.

The price cut comes 94 days since the machine was launched, with its original UK price coming in at £429.99. It took almost two years for original Xbox 360 to see a price cut, with a $50/£30 cut to the 20GB model of Xbox 360 in August 2007. The PlayStation 3 saw its first US price cut, a $100 reduction on the 60GB model, roughly eight months after launch.

Xbox UK Marketing Director Harvey Eagle confirmed to GameSpot that the company currently has no plans to cut the price in other territories. The Xbox One retails for $499 in the US--which is roughly £300.

"We are very happy with the success of Xbox One," said Eagle to GameSpot. "It's been our fastest-selling ever console in the UK, and I think we've seen already that both [the Xbox One and PS4] have been tremendously successful in a short period of time and that's only good for the industry. We are just a few months into a generation that's going to last for many years to come. We see this therefore as a marathon, and it's something we're committed to for the long haul."

But surely the price cut is being done to make the Xbox One more competitive against the PS4? "We're doing this because it will generate sales, absolutely. I think it's a great deal for people in the UK to get a next-gen machine for £399 including Kinect, including Titanfall, in the box. Yeah, it's a great deal and hopefully lots of people will take up the offer."

As part of the price cut, Microsoft will also sell its freshly unveiled limited edition Titanfall bundle in the UK at the new price of £399.99. Preorders of the machine, which includes a Titanfall download code, will begin today and will be available while stocks last.

Sony said at the end of January that it was selling 1.5 PS4's in the UK for every Xbox One sold. Will Microsoft's price cut help the Xbox One catch up?

Are there region differences or is the console the same everywhere? It would be cheaper to buy one from a US merchant and have it shipped abroad, which is crazy.

@youre_a_sheep I read something about them being region locked. But I don't think the PS4 is, so maybe Microsoft dropped the region lock as well.

@youre_a_sheep The PS4 cost $645 in India. It's mostly import tax I reckon. It's weird because gaming costs way more in developing/third word countries. And we can afford it the least.

@youre_a_sheep A big part of it's probably VAT. It's at 20% here in the EU. What is it in the U.S.?

@nl_skipper @PlatinumPaladin Yes, VAT (Value Added Tax) is a sales tax applied to most goods and services in the UK and EU.

@PlatinumPaladin @youre_a_sheep Sales tax as it's called here can vary by state but is generally somewhere from 8-10%, so our $499 XB1 ends up costing about $550 total. However if we buy from an online store like Amazon it's tax free, so $499 would be the final price paid. It seems like you guys are just plain getting overcharged. I've heard wild prices like $1,700 for a PS4 in Brazil and I can't understand why.

@youre_a_sheep @PlatinumPaladinIts the VAT EU countries add to everything. In the UK its 20%. In essence people here in the EU like being shafted by their overlords, so we get shafted at every opportunity, and like sheep, continue to pay and act accordingly so we can get shafted as much as possible.

In summary, people like me in the EU are freaking morons and are seeing as being such, as so the circle of life continues as we pay through our hard working arses so we can send gift aid to countries who cant sort their own shyte out for the benefit of payinbg over the odds for goods that should be a third less in a 1st word economy, and they would be, but for the fact we are all fooking mugs.

I do genuinely love the fact that you show deep sincerity and worry towards our self inflicted disadvantage, and this is the only line in this post not riddled with self knowing cynicism.

@youre_a_sheep @PlatinumPaladin $500 is around £300. Add 20% VAT = £360 ( ~ $600). So yes, even after the price drop, and including sales tax, the UK is still paying more.

I don't know why it is so high in Brazil, though, because that price is insane.

Was it really two years before the 360 saw a price cut? Wow. It's amazing how generous Microsoft are to the consumer when there's no competition around compared to when there is.

Even now we've still got a shortage of PS4s at my store while XBOnes take up shelf space. At the high prices the new consoles are going for right now, knocking thirty quid off (7%) strikes me as a token effort, one that I don't think will pay off.

What? An official price cut just 3 months after release? That must be a new record there. Xbone must be doing worst than I though in order to do this.

Plus all those early adopters who bough the console at full price Uff, that's very ugly.

Their initial Xbox One goal was so greedy that I was put off. Despite changing the premise of the Xbox One I was still put off. Dropping the price tag has done nothing to sway me into buying one

@northArrow Americans cant complain here, the US is where this console is the cheapest at the moment.. they made the equation €499 = $499 which resulted in Europeans having to pay a lot more already for this piece of plastic and silicon.

@VakarianGirl @northArrow They can afford to do it in the UK as they're already ripping us off so much with the price. They're just lowering their profit margins a little. The margins are already a lot smaller to start with in the US.

Cool, you can also upgrade your pc with a £100 card and play Titanfall at 58fps at 1080p with 2XAA on, something this xbox is incapable of.

@McGregor if you plug in a pci-e 3 card to a pci-e 1 slot it will only run at pci-e1 speeds meaning this magic upgrade on an old machine is simply wishful thinking pci-e1 is slow compared and would seriously limit the ouputing capabilities of the card.

new gfx cards require alot more power than they did a 4 years ago. so most 4 year old pcs will not have a psu large enough to support a modern gfx and even if they do your motherboard would need to be pci-e 3 to get the potentail out of the card. and old bus speeds would bottleneck your pcs over all performance

to suggest that you can simply plug a new gfx in an old pc is quiet simply retarded theres more to it than that. a modern card would not run the same in an old pc as it would a modern pc. a pc gets to the point where you just need to replace motherboard cpu and ram to see a vaible improvement. then theres software to take in mind depending on what your using wich windows at 32 bit or 64 bit etc etc

which takes me back to if your claiming throwing a new gfx card in an old pc will give you these miricle 60fps/1080p results you dont know what your taking about

@kovaras1984 @deg22 My 8 year old PC had a 650w power supply. And even if it didn't, it's still cheaper to buy a new power supply and video card than an XB1.

PCI-E has been around for a while, so finding a compatible card isn't hard. Once again, it's cheaper to upgrade, Power supply, Video Card, Motherboard, Processor, Ram, than to buy an XB1...Built my gaming rig for $550, which comes in at $100+ under the XB1 in the UK. Now if their parts are more expensive, it may be the same...But with a PC you'll get 1080p/60fps for nearly the same cost.

@deg22 @kovaras1984 I have an 9 year old computer with a 500w PSU. That's not the computer I use for gaming though. (The newer one is 4 years old and has 800w PSU). Anyways... 600w PSUs have been around for a long time. The videocard is 2 years old... but the CPU and ram is still better than these new consoles. Even my 11inch laptop is more powerful than the consoles. But the PCs do cost a lot more.

@deg22 @kovaras1984 its not always the case. You can and you will find software that you want to play with, which doesnt run as smoothly as you hoped on your upgraded PC. This is because consoles can count on a level of software optimization that is missing in PC ports. Not to mention the catalogue of games available only on console that you cant play on PC and vice versa. Its not that banal and simple.

It's great that your so happy with your new xbox that you rather spend your days spouting unfunded arguments and being generally unpleasant on websites than actually playing with the damn thing. Anyway I'm sure your next answer will be < insert random insult here > so consider this my last reply.

@kovaras1984 @deg22 well mine has. I bought 600w psu's 10 years ago, I really don't see your point. Everything you keep babbling on about can't hide the fact that a cheap as chips gfx card can outperform a brand new console. A console that has been made for the next 5 - 10 years according to microsoft. I don't want to be stuck with hardware, that was old two years ago already, for such a long period.

@deg22 @kovaras1984 yes because a new gfx card worth installing would work with a 4year old pc. the pci-e was defo upto scratch back then and all 4 year old pcs have 600 watt psu's to support the demands of a modern gfx lol.. oh wait no they dont.

lol at how angry the sony fanboys are in every post about xbox no matter how small even a remote coming about triggers about 3000 hateful comments, its pathetic

xbox one takes alot of flack for needing a 24/7 internet connection.. people say they dont want it and ms listened and got rid of it and went with same as sony which has a 1 off first time connect

xbox one takes alot of flack for games sharing and such... yet again ms listened to people and change there policies based upon what people say they want

People complained about 1080p etc etc and although it will only be in need games microsoft free up kinect resources for extra graphics out put and bring out better sdk tools letting devs achive 1080p much easier altho there are many games that run 1080p @ 60 fps all ready

people moan about price of the console and yet again ms have listen to the demands of the people and lowered the price and thrown in the biggest next gen game there is as of yet in with the deal....

and sony fanboys are still trying to pick fault lol. atleast ms are listening, and at least they dont make promises they carnt keep

sony on the other hand... originally said backwards compatibly was gonna happen. now its turn into an online streaming servive only for ps1/2 games which you would have to pay for games again to play

sony claim psn will be able to rival xbox live this time around... and psn goes down all the time. people carnt log on or can n carnt connect to game servers or the shop wont wont etc etc etc and they even charge now!

sony promised a great launch line up and there biggest game got delayed lol

Sony openly made fun of ms polices about 'this is how you shar3e a game on ps4' but then take out auido cd and usb media support so you have to use the sony app which costs money

MS are listening and changing as people have demanded. Sony is a joke that made promises it couldn't keep yet there's still wild hate for xbox one....

get a life sony fanboys. kinect is not a spycam, besides if you believe that you can unplug it and xbone still works.any1 who belives this probly isnt capable of reading this post anyway or is 2 busy watch are u.f.o videos real on youtube

infamous second sun.. no multi player... the order... no multi player. knack.... should never have been made

vs

Titanfal forza and dead rising

Ahh now i get why ps4 fans are so mad. they made the wrong choice and wasted their money on empty promises.
