Xbox One S Review

The Xbox One is smaller, sexier, and more capable than ever, but is it enough?

Update: This is our review of the Xbox One S. Click here for more information on Microsoft's upcoming Xbox One X console.

When Microsoft first released its Xbox One console back in 2013, it had a rocky start. Since then, the company ditched its Kinect camera in a controversial move and has steadily been making software improvements to the system. The Xbox One S represents another move in bolstering the Xbox ecosystem with a smaller, more refined design that adds some new features. But in 2016, is it enough? Is the Xbox One S right for you? Find out in my in-depth review below.

Now Playing: Xbox One S - Video Review

What’s in the Box?

Before I dive into the design and specs of the new system, let’s take a look at what comes in the box. While the S will come in 500GB and 1TB variants, which retail for $299 and $349 respectively, I’m reviewing the $399 2TB version. Included with this version is the console, vertical stand, controller, HDMI cable, and power cable along with a code for a 14-day Xbox Live Gold trial.

You’ll notice that my configuration does not include a Kinect. While Microsoft says the Xbox One S does support the Kinect, you’ll have to connect it using a separate USB adapter. Those who already have an Xbox One with a Kinect are eligible to get the adapter for free by visiting the Xbox website, but it will also be sold separately for $39.99. Update: Microsoft recently sent us a Kinect adapter and it works just as well as it did on the Xbox One. We made a Skype call on it and the sound and video quality performed as expected.

Design

The original Xbox One was black and bulky, measuring 13.1x10.8x3.2 inches. Let’s be frank, it looked a lot like a big VCR. It wasn’t offensive-looking, but it wasn’t particularly sexy either. The new S model, on the other hand, is 40 percent smaller, measuring just 11.6x8.9x2.5 inches. It's also 1.4 pounds lighter, weighing 6.4 pounds.

The Xbox One S is 40 percent smaller than the original.

Instead of opting for the glossy black aesthetic this time around, Microsoft decided to employ a mixture of matte black with what the company is calling robot white. The console also features a bunch of small circular textures spread across the chassis, which gives the console a little pizazz and no doubt helps hide the large circular exhaust at the top. Overall, the new Xbox One S looks quite clean.

Overall, the new Xbox One S looks quite clean

With the smaller frame, I was concerned that the S might overheat or have its fan rev extra loudly to make up for the fact that it has less room to dissipate heat. Fortunately, however, the S was near whisper quiet, even while playing a game. From what I could tell from putting my hand above its exhaust, it never got obscenely hot either. Even the optical drive sounded quieter, with the original Xbox One sounding like you had a tiny car wash when you were installing games from a disc.

Perhaps more impressive is the fact that Microsoft managed to do all this while integrating the power brick into the chassis. This is a small engineering marvel as far as I’m concerned, especially when you consider that the Xbox One’s power brick measured a massive 6.6x1.8x2.9 inches. To go along with the integrated power brick is a thinner two-prong power cable, but not only is the cable thinner, but it's considerably shorter as well. I measured the original power cable at 95 inches, whereas the new cable came in around 60.

The Xbox One S power cable is over a third shorter than the original cable, but is a standard off-the-shelf two prong one.

Aside from the omission of the Kinect port, the ports on the S remain largely the same. The back of the S features ports for power, HDMI out, HDMI in, two USB 3.0 ports, IR out, S/PDIF, gigabit Ethernet, and a lock port. While the S features many of the same buttons as the original, some things have been moved around a bit. Whereas the original model featured a USB and controller pairing button on the left, the S moves them to the front. In cramped spaces, this can make pairing controllers easier and can give you more room to plug in USB drives. It’s certainly a welcome change. Another welcome change is the move from the capacitive power button to a discrete physical one. While the capacitive button on the original model looks pretty sexy, it was often easy to accidentally trigger.

While the PlayStation 4 can be positioned vertically, the original Xbox One was designed to lay flat. This time around, however, Microsoft has redesigned the console’s cooling system to use one large 12cm fan up at the top of the unit. This allows you to prop it vertically with the included stand. One thing that I didn’t like about the stand, however, is that once you pop it in, it’s a pain to take off. There’s no latch to disconnect the thing; rather, I had to resort to small karate chops to remove it. So do be mindful of this before you slide it on.

Specs

Inside the systems, the main ingredients are largely the same. It still features an 8-core CPU from AMD with 8GB of DDR3 RAM coupled with 32MB of eSRAM for the GPU. Speaking of the GPU, the Xbox One S’ GPU frequency is actually seven percent faster this time around, going from 853MHz to 914MHz. While this could make games perform slightly faster in theory, you aren’t likely to notice the difference, especially if the games feature locked frame rates. Rather, the extra performance nudge is simply to ensure that the system has enough computing headway to support high dynamic range (HDR) and 4K (2160p) video streaming.

ComponentSpecifications

What is HDR? HDR provides a much higher contrast ratio between black and whites and displays a much wider visible color gamut. Essentially, colors look much brighter and more vibrant, whereas blacks will look much darker, like the pixels aren't even lit. Like 4K, it’s poised to be “the next big thing” in the panel space. And like 4K, you’ll need a TV that can support HDR. You’ll also need movies and games that support it, too. Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 are examples of upcoming games that will support HDR. Unfortunately, we don’t yet have a 4K/HDR TV in the office just yet, though we do plan to get one soon. I’ll update this review here once we get it in.

While 2TB of space should be more than enough for most people, I wanted to see how much free space the console would have after immediately installing its various updates out of the box. I saw that it had 1.6TB of usable space, which means the OS and its updates essentially takes up a whopping 400GB of storage, which is pretty crazy. Another disappointing aspect of the hard drive is that it retains the slow 5,400rpm speed found in the original Xbox One. Sadly, you still can’t upgrade the drive for better speed or more storage. Despite the upgrades in other areas, boot and game installation times remain unchanged. For instance, both the S and original Xbox One took 34 minutes to install Battlefield 4.

Controller

While there are some small changes this time around, if you didn’t like the Xbox One controller before, you still won’t like it now.

the new Xbox One S controller uses a little less plastic at the top for a cleaner look.
the new Xbox One S controller uses a little less plastic at the top for a cleaner look.

Other than the fact that it comes in white to match the S, one noticeable difference that you’ll find about the controller is that it features a new textured grip, which has a gentle sandpaper feel to it. I’m not really sure that the original controllers needed this, but it doesn’t detract from the experience.

The controller now also supports Bluetooth, so you can pair it with Windows 10 PCs, if you wanted to as well.

Microsoft also says that the thumbstick has been redesigned to withstand more wear and tear. From an experiential point of view, I couldn’t feel a difference.

Some may be disappointed to hear that you’ll have to plop a pair of AA batteries into the thing and it still isn’t rechargeable like the PlayStation 4 controllers. It’s also a little disappointing to see that there are no battery indicators on the controller itself.

While I really like the controller overall, I do have some personal minor gripes with the shoulder buttons, which I wish were positioned a little further back, so my index fingers don’t feel like they have to “lean” forward as much. I also wish they were more satisfying to click.

Conclusion

With Microsoft announcing that its new console Project Scorpio will be coming out next year, that leaves the Xbox One S in a weird spot. Do you get the S now or wait for the more powerful console? Who exactly is this for?

No Caption Provided

Well, if you don’t already have an Xbox One and want an HDR/4K/Blu-ray player, then this console is a must-buy as far as I’m concerned. It’s even a little cheaper than standalone HDR/4K/Blu-ray players. It’s not the cheapest HDR/4K video streamer, however. Nvidia’s Shield Android TV console costs a third less than the cheapest S SKU at $200, but it doesn’t have a 4K HDR Blu-ray drive.

If you don’t already have an Xbox One and want an HDR/4K/Blu-ray player, then this console is a must-buy as far as I’m concerned.

If you already own an Xbox One, I’d advise against upgrading here unless you really want the 4K/HDR support right now.

If you’ve been on the fence about the Xbox One or have been waiting for the bugs to be ironed out and the library to mature, the Xbox One S makes it a great time to jump on board. It’s slim, is the only model that can be outfitted with a 2TB HDD, is priced fairly, and offers the aforementioned video features. If you don’t care about all that, and just want to play Xbox One games, then I’d actually recommend the original Xbox One over the S. Its 500GB SKU retails for $250, which is $50 less than the comparable S model.

The Xbox One S might not be a huge overhaul--you’ll want to wait for Project Scorpio if that’s what you seek--but it’s undoubtedly the sleekest, most feature-rich Xbox yet.

Is better of you just get a PC and PS4. On PC you don't have to pay for Xbox live and can play Xbox games a d the on PS4 you can play all their amazing exclusives.

@DIOSNY: yet you own an xbox or ps4? Which is on an x86 platform, games are developed on PC's..... The next xbox and ps4k will run on the AMD polaris architecture *Cough* RX 480.... Xbox is now planing on upgrading consoles to keep up with the PC market....

Kind of like upgrading a PC except instead of you buying a new GPU of your choosing. You get to buy a whole new system every two years which cost as much as a Damn good GPU, but with less performance.

Hate to break it to you, but you are a part of PC gaming.

@thespicychiken: where did you get this every 2 year mark from? By the time Scorpio comes out the Xbox one and Ps4 will be 4 years old. Before last generation this was the norm for consoles generations.

@thespicychiken: It has nothing to do with software architecture or what kind of hardware is on the box I work 8 to 10 hours a day in front of a PC I don't wanna do the same when I come home not to mention I play a lot of sports games and shooters and keyboard and mouse just isn't an option when you're trying to play on a big screen from your couch.

@runstalker: Yeah you go play a competitive fps on PC with a controller and let me know it goes and let's not forget all cheating that goes on and don't even get me started with the broken ports and having to wait and beg for ports.

@DIOSNY: All you said was: "I play a lot of sports games and shooters and keyboard and mouse just isn't an option when you're trying to play on a big screen from your couch."

I said it's perfectly feasible to play PC games on your couch. You know, HDMI output, Big Picture mode, support for virtually any controller/driving wheel/arcade stick, etc. Sports games, driving games, fighting games, shooters.

But now you've decided to layer on a bunch of subjective grief that I can't help you with.

Obviously competitive FPS games are superior with mouse & keyboard. Any general FPS gameplay is superior with a mouse & keyboard. The reticle is fundamentally a cursor, and clearly it's easier/faster/more accurate to manipulate a cursor with a well-calibrated mouse than it is with an analog stick.

@DIOSNYMany years ago, that was me. I wanted nothing to do with PC gaming. Born and raised console purist.

Some co-workers at the time were able to convert me, thanks to after-hours multiplayer fun on PC. The rest is history.

A guy who previously swore total allegiance to console and gave the finger to PC, has since become equal parts console gamer and PC gamer, and man is it ever worth it.:

@dcmdream If you have a PS4, presumably you have a PS4 game library.

The Neo is 100% backwards compatible. In fact, there won't be Neo-specific game releases.

PS4 game boxes and store pages will simply have a badge indicating Neo support, and games will either ship with the necessary Neo mode content and presets, or patch-up.

You can expect the same treatment on Scorpio.

Any vanilla PS4 game, old or new, is 'plug and play' on Neo.Just like Scorpio, your existing library carries over seamlessly.

The leaked docs indicate that while Sony is mandating developers to prepare Neo modes in all games from August 2016 onwards, it's up to each developer whether they'd like to enhance previously-released titles or not.

That may come down to player demand/voting.

For example: Many people would love to play Bloodborne or Uncharted 4 with even higher image quality accompanied by super stable frame rates. If enough demand is there, it could happen.

The S will be positioned as the new baseline system essentially. Personally, Project Scorpio is more interesting to me so I'll be holding off, still enjoy my 360(s) anyhow. While Microsoft has a long uphill battle to catch Sony in this console generation, it's encouraging to see them still competing. Ultimately I believe that having competition in the console space is good for consumers.

I don't care about the 4k graphics, I just want a smaller Xbone so I can have some space for the PS4 so I'm getting this. my table space for game consoles under my tv is VERY limited.

I'm keeping my OG Xbone though I intend to wait until the XBone SlIm comes out in black before my buy it.

@runstalker: my room is kind of small so that's what the issue is. what would help is if I bought a flat screen Tv which I'm saving up for. I'm using an old big screen tv from 2004, you know, one of THOSE HUGE TUBE TVS. I lucked out because this tv has an HDMI slot on it but only ONE HDMI slot so I have to switch the XBone cord with the PS4 whenever I want to play a PS4 game.

@smokerob79: Scorpio versions get to borrow from the high end image quality presets of their Windows 10 cousins.

Since there's no Scorpio-only exclusive games (at least while that "no generations"/"no exclusives" policy is in effect), we'll be looking at multiplatform titles borrowing the high end settings of their PC counterparts.

So even prior to Scorpio, thanks to Play Anywhere, PC gamers will get to experience Scorpio-style image quality and performance in the Windows 10 versions of Xbox One titles.

Get yourself a GTX 1070 now and take advantage of all these simultaneous XB1>Win10 releases, and you're practically already in the Scorpio tier... over a year ahead of its release.

@siarhei: Most pc gamers do , laptops are expensive and unreliable for high end gaming and upgrade path is slim.

I usually tend to only upgrade every 5-6 years or so besides the graphics card though. That i will change out every 2 years or so.

Still using a 2010 I7930 processor and no trouble in any titles with a 980ti.

@deviltaz35: Naturally, most PC gamers have a gaming PC. I would imagine that if you plan on PC gaming, you would buy a desktop.

My comment was referring to @runstalker suggestion to get a GTX 1070 instead of a Scorpio. I just think it's not an option for a lot of people.

Frankly, even if a person has a desktop, there's no guarantee that it will be able to use the card: it may not be compatible, may not fit, or any other number of reasons.

I used to have a gaming PC, which got killed by a power surge. After numerous attempts to reanimate it, I gave up and got what I thought was a decent PC. Few years later, when I tried to upgrade it, I discovered that technology has moved on big time. First, my power supply was missing proper connectors, so I got a new one. Then, the card would not fit, ok, I got a miniATX version. And the final nail in the coffin was when it turned out that my BIOS was not compatible with the card, and there was no update available. After that I just decided I don't have time for this BS, returned the card, got an X1 and been happily gaming ever since.

@siarheiMaybe non-gamers, yeah.

PC gamers still build/buy/upgrade desktops. There's a ton of supply and demand out there to prove that. Vendors, services, products, communities.

Gigantic companies like Microsoft obviously still see a market for sophisticated PC gaming. Whether it's on desktop/laptop/hybrid/Surface/etc.

Often you'll find PC gamers have nice smaller form factor cases these days, and they can still accommodate full size GPUs like the 1070.

Even super compact HTPC setups (Steambox-like) have small, powerful GPU options available from AMD.:

@runstalker: "Gigantic companies like Microsoft obviously still see a market for sophisticated PC gaming."

So, a simple google search reveals this for 2015:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/01/27/pc-dominated-worldwide-game-revenue-in-2015

If you read it critically, then you shall see:

Digital PC sales made 32bln, but out of these, 17bln were made through F2P micro transactions, so that leaves 15bln in actual game sales.

Consoles, on the other hand, made ~25bln (with 17bln through retail game sales)

Finally, mobile gaming made 25bln, we all know how (damn you MTs).

So, several conclusions can be drawn:

1. Console sales market at the very least is comparable to PC market, if not on par.

2. PC game sales represent less than 20% of the total market.

3. Nearly half of "sophisticated PC gaming" revenue is from F2P MMOs.

4. The gamers prefer to spend 2/3rds of their money on console and mobile gaming.

Personally, I doubt these gamers would even own, much less build a gaming PC.

P.S.: Your comments seems quite intelligent, so I hope we can have a respectful discussion about this :)

@siarhei: I saw those stats too. Not surprising with the big F2P dominance in Asian markets with tons of users. Such a massive quantity of users, even if only 10℅ spend on your game you're pulling in great revenue.

I'm speaking more to the concept of multiplatform and continuing to bring big games to PC, with high end support.

Take Microsoft, for example, and the whole UWP/Play Anywhere initiative. Their primo first-party teams get to produce Xbox One titles for two models of XB1, Scorpio, and Windows 10 -- with a purchase opportunity on any of the platforms. Great way to maximise potential profits and hit multiple demographics.

Big publishers feel the same way about multiplats and releasing PC versions. It's not going to be the highest money maker, but it's easy to market and toss up on a major digital storefront like Steam or GoG for an extra revenue stream.

@runstalker: "It's not going to be the highest money maker, but it's easy to market and toss up on a major digital storefront like Steam or GoG for an extra revenue stream."

Oh, I agree with this completely, it's an easy way to expand the market.

The thing is, I don't think a lot of people have both an X1 and a PC powerful enough to run the Play Anywhere games, so to me that sounds like a useless feature. Just like Sony crossplay, which gives you both Vita and PS4 game versions, it seems like a pure marketing gimmick.

I think the only thing it does is it takes X1 exclusives and expands them to PCs. Which is kind of like Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot, since this removes any reason for PC gamers to get an X1.

@siarheiHere's a good updated longer term PC sales forecast:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-08-02-pc-games-revenue-to-hit-usd42-billion-in-2020-dfc

As you can see, at least with North American and European gamers, the big growth market on PC is going to be the "core" and "moderate"-core demographic, thanks in part to ongoing AAA game releases.

Also, I think people need to better understand the shifting strategy of Microsoft, where the particular box you're playing on is becoming less and less important to them, as long as you're using Xbox Live and Windows 10 services.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-07-22-microsoft-rolls-the-dice-in-a-huge-xbox-gamble

"The redefinition of Xbox as being a part of a much broader ecosystem of services centered on Windows 10 makes the actual success of Xbox hardware, while not unimportant, certainly less of a priority"

I am amazed at how may reviews completely skip over how the S fairs as a UHD BluRay player compared to other few in the marketplace. I would imagine a lot of ppl are buying this to mostly play 4K movies.

Id get a PC over Xbox One now I think, since they are starting to bridge the gap between Windows 10 and Xbox games. Slightly more expensive, but worth it.

Definitely better than the original Xbox One. If you aren't sold on 4k gaming or VR then this is the box for you. You also get 4k video movie streams which is great. It is a really good box. For those who are going for 4k gaming and VR then no need to upgrade now, just wait for scorpio. I will be getting the 1tb bundle Xbox One S in December.

@runstalker: Can't speak for them, but it makes a bit more sense if the first "are" is an "aren't".

@FallenOneX: Yes I typed it in wrong and some got a little pissy over the error. I think they need to get a life! I fixed it though. :)
