Xbox One's Phantasy Star Online 2 Is Not An Exclusive In The West - E3 2019

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Phil Spencer is just excited to work with Sega again.

Among the surprises that Microsoft had in store its E3 2019 press conference was Phantasy Star Online 2. Years after its release in Japan, the game will finally launch in North America. And while its presence on Microsoft's stage at E3 assured us an Xbox One release is in the but Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed the game will arrive on other platforms--although whether that means PS4, Nintendo Switch, or something else remains to be seen..

Spencer sat down with Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann to talk about Xbox's presence at E3 2019. The nearly 50-minute interview saw the two chat about the excitement surrounding the MMO's Western reveal. "I'm not trying to say this is because of me but I said [to Sega], 'You know, so many of the constructs in today's online console games were born in Phantasy Star and 90 percent of the gamers today don't know what a Phantasy Star Online is,'" Spencer told Gerstmann.

Now Playing: Phantasy Star Online 2 - Western Localization Trailer | E3 2019

The Western Localization trailer revealed during E3 2019, above, announces that Phantasy Star Online 2 will finally make its way to North America. And while Spencer couldn't confirm whether the game will appear in other regions like Europe and the Middle East because "Sega's ultimately responsible for it," he did say the game isn't console exclusive. "Yes, it will end up on all platforms."

There's no specification on what "all platforms" means, and Gerstmann didn't press for clarification on this statement, but Spencer is certain the MMO will not just be exclusive to the Xbox family. Spencer "happens to have a soft spot" for Phantasy Star Online, believes "it can be a meaningful franchise," and is just excited to work with Sega again.

Phantasy Star Online 2 will arrive sometime in Spring 2020.

@sladakrobot: It must be coming to the UK/Australia though? Like it would be ridiculous if it isn't same language and many MMO's even though they list their servers as "Europe" they host them in the USA so it wouldn't make a difference.

I remember playing the original on the dreamcast. That was the only reason I owned a dreamcast, because that was the only console that had the game at the time. I fondly remember playing it for hours and hours with the same group of people. I am so excited to finally be able to jump back into that universe and recreate my old CAST!

I wonder if it will be cross play for PS4 as well? While on the console side it doesn't really make a difference but if you play it on PC that means the players would have to be divided between PS4 and Xbox since cross play between consoles really isn't a thing yet.

In 2000 I played phantasy online via Dreamcast and dial up, it was amazing and life changing. And of course on xbox.

I really wished, MS could have scored this as an exclusive.

@jenovaschilld: The definitive Phantasy Star Online experience was on GameCube, not Xbox and not even Dreamcast.

@Elranzer: I played the gamecube version on broadband a couple years later, it was awesome. I guess though, (even though i had played EQ PC) it was the first console online game. The DC magazine, came with a disc full of samples. The PSO trial version was really strange, you could only explore a few areas, interact so, so much, and team up with others for first mission or zone. But still, ... holy shit.... it was the first time realizing that you are playing with other people on a console from around the world. The feeling was hard to describe. Going from playing Combat on Atari, and other consoles where all the people who interacted were right beside you to.. online.

ME and a buddy got the game, a few months after it came out. It was just so new, so different. Also the game cube required you to get an add on item, and by then it released it with 2nd update to the game. Because the game had been out a year or two by now, there was a bug in episode one that allowed dupeing of items that was was way out of hand, and just spread to fast. By then I moved onto EQOA on the ps2 which was even better.

But nothing can replace that first time.

@Elranzer: Agreed. I started on DreamCast, put a few hundred hours in. But when it came out for GameCube...oh man, i have a few thousand hours in there. My main RaMar has over 1k on his own.

I am SUPER looking forward to this, my Japan/US patch glitches out too often on PC right now.

@gamingdevil800: You're being too generous, it's more like 95% to 5% PS4/Xbox split. Xbox in Japan is practically nonexistent.

@Tidus1012: It's honestly why I'm intrigued by these comments from Phil Spencer about wanting to buy out a "Japanese Studio". Not sure if any of them in their right mind actually would? Also that 80% to 20% is what it was roughly for Sekiro.

@gamingdevil800: @Tidus1012

So the big question is - do you put all your resources in a market you have successfully penetrated about as well as its going to get, or start trying to find new customers. And a good Japanese developer will help you with that.

So the USA market for xbox has been flat for a couple generations. https://www.gamesindustry.biz/ The xbox sales very well here in the states, but the growth market is EU, India, China, and S AM. Asain studios are doing much better since the Japanese developing crash (2011-2017ish), or at least a few of them are killing it. Take Atlus, Square, Capcom who have found a happy middle ground between AAA, mobile, indy, and those $15 dollar games that sold so well on the Wii. Some of those developers/publishers are penetrating the India/China market as well as beloved throughout the EU.

A good portion of Sony's success this generation is due to marketing directors of the 7th gen who pushed PS products throughout the EU. I know its seems weird here in the USA, but it was not as easy as going a couple of miles to your local walmart - picking up a console and a few games, or having Amazon get it to your door. It is much easier to purchase something when its right in your face, and MS games is generations behind Sony/Nin in many markets. Even if there is a huge demand for a certain xbox game--, in Poland, Turkey, Spain, you need it to be there in the isles and in that customers face. Not all purchases are online. You can buy xbox products in most any country, but Nin/PS is so much more 'present' for its potential consumer. And Ease is hard to beat.

Right now, the 800lb gorilla is the USA market that spends more then any other... but all the other markets combined probably make up 4-5 times more then the US. And these markets are only getting bigger. So if Xbox wants to do well in the 9th gen, and beyond- you better have some chess pieces spread out. EU, India, AU, and other love Ninendo/PS because they are so used to them. They see them at grocery stores, TV, fast food.

If I was Phil Spencer, I would already have a couple Japanese developers as part of my 1rst party line up. Even if they lose money now, you need those franchises to build your consumer base later on. First person shooters and bro games cannot be what defines your console completely.

@jenovaschilld: The problem is Microsoft can't stop meddling with the Japanese developers when they bring them on board. The Scalebound devs protested over and over Microsoft's interference, and it cost them the game in the end.

@Thanatos2k: Yeah I saw that on https://www.gamesindustry.biz, several months after it was cancelled some employess came out and said it was pressured to heavily add in 'monetized' content.

That's a good thing for this particular game. Phantasy Star needs more exposure. I'd love to see a brand new RPG in the series, though I don't see it happening.

@onehitta323: If it's only on a Microsoft system, it's exclusive. You guys need to give it a rest with the semantics. Halo can't be played on Nintendo, PlayStation or through Stadia. It can only be played on Microsoft Xbox and Microsoft Windows. Sounds like an exclusive to me. "Xbox backwards compatibility is not true backwards compatibility." "Xbox exclusives are not true exclusives." The things you people tell yourselves to make you feel superior over a toy are ridiculous.
