Xbox Scorpio vs. PS4 Pro -- Microsoft Discusses Its Big Power Advantage

The performance gap between the two consoles will be "obvious," Albert Penello says.

Now that Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 4 Pro and detailed its specs, it's possible to compare this system against Microsoft's Project Scorpio. As it relates to performance, the PS4 Pro's GPU will offer 4.2 teraflops of computing power, which compares to 6 teraflops for Scorpio.

This makes Scorpio around 43 percent more powerful when looking at that metric alone. In a new interview with Polygon, Xbox director Albert Penello said Scorpio's performance advantage over PS4 Pro will be "obvious."

No Caption Provided

As such, Penello said he's not too worried about the fact that the PS4 Pro will have a one-year headstart on Scorpio. Penello declined to share a more specific release date for the device than "holiday 2017." Another big unknown is the price; Microsoft has said people should think of Xbox Scorpio as a "premium product," though it remains to be seen what means in terms of a price point.

"We know it's important to deliver an experience that demonstrates the power gap between [the PS4 Pro and Scorpio] at a price that makes sense to console gamers," Penello said.

Microsoft has time and again referred to Scorpio as the "most powerful console ever made," so a premium price point is expected.

Interestingly, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in June that Microsoft could have released a new, more powerful Xbox One this year. However, the company decided against it because it wanted to wait until it could deliver "true" 4K gaming with six teraflops of performance.

Also in the interview, Penello was asked if Microsoft could release a firmware update for the standard Xbox One that would introduce 4K and HDR support as Sony is doing with all PS4 models. He said it's too soon to say. "Until I know more about how they're doing it, I can't speak to whether or not we can offer something similar," he explained.

As announced at Sony's PlayStation Meeting, a firmware update for all PS4 models--dating back to launch in November 2013--will add HDR and 4K support. This is currently available with the Xbox One S, but not earlier models.

This is retarded. MS is amping up its vaporware vs actual hardware. Is the same thing if Sony came out and said that the PS5 will sh!t on Project Scorpio. Or by the end of next year the available PCs will sh!t on both. At least release your hardware before talking smack. What a douche,

Well, some of us will care more about the exclusive games of both consoles could offer, the distinction between graphic performance of both consoles is rather insignificant, if someone really concerns about max graphic performance and quality, should probably considering to switch over to PC instead of consoles.

PeasantStation 4 Pro can only run 4k games in 20fps. Xbucks Poopio being a little powerful will probably run it at 30fps........both of them in medium settings lol.

no TV allows HDR to be enabled on any resolution below 4K. It's not that HDR is not possible on any resolution below 4K. It's just that TV manufacturers consider HDR a premium feature and 1080P TVs are considered commodity at this point and they will not add HDR to 1080P TVs.

@lcrava: still in denial. You do know that the upscaling features of the PS4 Pro came from AMD and the AMD chipset for the Scorpio is AMD's next gen chipset and will be even better than on the PS4 Pro. Plus, the Scorpio will be fast enough to do closer to true 4K gaming. All the PS4 Pro developers have already admitted that the PS4 Pro is not a 4K machine. Enjoy it for HDR gaming. Just like the Xbox One S. But at least the Xbox One S can play 4K movies.

@lcrava: Sony and it's fans have been talking trash for years now it's time cod ms to crush Sony. The 34% difference of Scorpio is bull the Scorpio will look twice as good as PS pro the reasons why is the Sony pro has a huge bottle neck and that's the garbage CPU in the Sony pro the Scorpio has more ram,new CPU ,better graphics card

@emptycow718: Exactly it's not just the 2tflop difference. It has more ram, it won't use Jaguar and everything else is much stronger and faster. The compute units etc. PS4 guys kill me talking about 2tflops won't make that big of a difference. Lmfao but this gen they talked up how the PS4 is 50 percent stronger then X1 with only about a 0.52 tflop difference. This will be about 2tflops, better CPU, better GPU, more ram, dx12 etc. But that won't make that much of a difference. Lol

Ps4 pro will be out in a months or so. Scorpio looks nice, but is a year or so away, so it is just a paper launch. Probably a year or so after the scorpio launched there will be a ps5. Use what is best for now, then buy and or sell to upgrade when the time come.

@Eddie619: not goingnto happen this Sony pro shit will go on for 3 years. So the next Sony hardware jump will be in around 2019 and Microsoft will come out with another hardware jump in 2020 that will crush whatever Sony puts out in 2019 this is the way it will go for along time . Microsoft learned that they need to have the more powerful system everytime

@fastica: Not happening stream gaming is not popular enough and internet isnt reliable/fast enough for everyone around the world for that to happen so soon, and gamers usually dont like streaming because it introduce lag so they need better tech as well to lower that.

So that would cut a huge part of their target audience and make the sale of the wii u look huge in comparison.

I am not convinced about this Scorpio mystery machine yet. M$ needs to come out with a tech demo sooner or later and be clear and precise as to what this system is capable of. I don't care about the 6 Teraflops and/or your "Gentleman" tweets Mr. Spencer; I need evidence that the Scorpio is the definitive face of console gaming. I am a proud PC gamer and have been for decades now. So realistically, I won't be impressed by crappy PR BS like 1080p at 60fps blah blah blah ! I been gaming like that for years. Can your Scorpio give me 4K at 60fps ? Cause even on PC, it's very TOUGH to get proper 60fps at 4K unless we have a 2 way or 3 way SLI/Crossfire configuration. So unless the Scorpio can do that, I am not buying into this 4K b.s. any time soon. Besides, what's the heck with all this HDR lighting in games ? The Elder Scrolls Oblivion on PC had a HDR graphical option back in 2006. So what's the big deal ? Many PC games have HDR mods available already. Not enough M$, we need more than that. You saw what SONY have in store for us, time to show us what your Scorpio is truly capable of. Otherwise, I am sticking with my original X1 for exclusives.

These companies are way over hyping 4k gaming xD not only do i predict scorpio not being native 4k with only six terraflops but he is right if it does true 4k gaming there will be a noticable difference namely the price xD seriously ffs no one cares about 4k that badly we have seen time and time again this generation that people want 60fps not uber cool graphics that comes with peasant frame rate =/ man im glad ive been a PC gamer all my life sony and microsoft are showing constantly they dont care about actual users alk they give a damn about is the fanboy wars which spout nothing but "MOAR GWAFFICS" morons -_-

well, i am a playstation user and will never jump over microsoft product ever again....but i am happy that scorpio is more powerful, because sony will definitely take a big hit, and then will be forced to win the next console war....sony wanted an upugrade for PS4 for VR and 4k...microsoft rushed the next gen by releasing the scorpio...and dont tell me its an "upgrade"..when you see the gap you know its something waay more powerful..

well..let the xbox win the end of thi gen..and as a customer im already thrilled to see what sony will bring after PS4 Pro...maybe the first modular/upgradable console....

@sfirita: Sorry, but like Sony, Microsoft (Panello and Spencer) has clearly stated that the Scorpio is still part of the Xbox One family. Whatever makes a next gen leap, an actual next gen (usually a differing power and graphics) then either both the Pro and Scorpio are next-gen or they both aren't. Just because the Scorpio rises the power level more than the PS4 Pro does not negate the fact they the PS4 Pro does raise the power level over 2 times over the current PS4. If you accept Sony as its word about what the Pro represents then why not accept Microsoft that the Scorpio is just an elite version of the Xbox One family? What if they put Pro at the end? "Xbox One Pro". Will that help?

And Sony is not foolish enough to bring out PS5 any earlier then 2019. Which means Xbox Two Pro a year after that.

@sfirita: If consoles keep making new systems every two years, what's the point of even buying a console? Why not just get a PC, which at least you'll be able to easily upgrade. The only reason I even buy consoles is so I don't have to upgrade. Since that has unfortunately changed, consoles have become pointless. Unless you buy a console just for the exclusives. I can't think of any console exclusive that would be worth the price of buying a system.

4k. 4,000. 400 x 10. 8,000/2.

I'm sick of seeing this number. 1080p AND stable 60FPS for GAMING or just stop talking lol.

@deadp00l: Totally agree. As a PC and also an owner of a PS4, 1080p at solid 60fps is miles better than 4K at 30fps.

Not sure what Sony is thinking with the Pro, it does not offer 4k native gaming, it really is just a PS4 that is capable of up scaling to fill the pixels on TV's for 4K owners. The Scorpio is just an idea at this point but it's power difference suggests a real upgrade to the X1. I have been a Sony guy for years but I think the Scorpio is going to be the console most of us will want to get. 43% difference is no joke! ... Sony where are you going with this? I love the price, but without a 4k TV is there any reason at all to upgrade? or I should wait for the Scorpio?

Well the Xbox one S is hardware based. While the all models of the PS4 and PS Pro will be software. Also PS4 Pro is still only going to use HDMI 1.0

@ltjohnnyrico: better off putting your cash for both systems in a gaming pc to be honest thats what i did and yes admittedly i have spent a fortune but i still have my ps4 and a pc with 9tf of power and im very dissapointed with the ps4 pro, its clearly a filler until ps5 in another couple years its so obvious it hurts, not even a good filler.

Too bad it's being released in 4th quarter 2017. 6 TFLOPs roughly translates to a GTX 980 TI in the performance realm, but we'll be seeing GDDR6 by 1st and 2nd quarters of 2018. GDDR6 is HBM3, or what Nvidia and AMD refer their Volta and Navi architectures. Seems like Scorpio will be horribly antiquated within 6 months of its launch.
