Xbox Series S Revealed -- A $299 Next-Gen Console

Following a leak regarding both the Series S and Series X, Microsoft has confirmed a cheaper next-gen option is indeed on the way.

[Update: Microsoft has now confirmed the Xbox Series S will launch around in the world on November 10 at $299. Xbox Series X launches the same day for $499. Both will be available to pre-order beginning September 22. A "robot white" controller will also be available.]

Microsoft has finally officially announced the Xbox Series S, its long-rumored budget-priced next-gen gaming console that is coming this year. Xbox Series S will cost $299 in the US and comes housed inside what Microsoft calls the smallest Xbox ever. Xbox UK has also confirmed that the system will cost £250 there. In Australia, the system will cost $499AU.

Xbox Series S will release on the same day as the Xbox Series X, so customers will be able to choose between the two from day one.

Now Playing: Xbox Series S VERSUS Series X: Which Is Right For You?

In terms of design, Series S looks exactly like the leaked image that surfaced on September 7--it's a small, white rectangle with a minimalist design and no disc drive. The front features nothing more than a power button, USB port, and a sync button for the controller.

According to a report from Windows Central, the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X will both release on November 10, with the Series X selling for $499. The Series X price and release date both remain unconfirmed, but given that the Series S information was correct, it seems like a safe bet.

Microsoft announced the Series S in reaction to leaks; it didn't hide the fact that it was planning to reveal the system at a later time (possibly after PS5 and Series X pricing had been announced, to further highlight the surprising $299 price). As such, so far it's only officially shared select details about the Series S--its technical specs have not been announced.

However, a leaked Xbox Series S trailer also made its way online, revealing some of the key details about the system. That trailer has now been released officially, and you can watch it above. It states that Series S comes with a custom 512 GB SSD to allow for fast load times and instant game switching and support for 1440p gaming at 120 FPS. In other words, it appears to largely be what the rumors suggested: a box that's every bit as capable as the Series X, but one that isn't intended for native 4K gaming.

Xbox Series S Features List

  • All-digital
  • 1440p at up to 120 FPS
  • DirectX ray tracing
  • Variable rate shading
  • Variable refresh rate
  • Ultra-low latency
  • Custom 512 GB SSD
  • 4K streaming media playback
  • 4K upscaling for games

Thurrott reporter Brad Sams first unveiled the design of the Xbox Series S in the video below. Industry insider Daniel Ahmad subsequently backed up the report, saying this is the design we should expect before Microsoft confirmed it to be real.

Windows Central reports that both Xbox Series X and Series S will be available through Xbox's All Access subscription service, with the Series S being set at $25 USD a month and the Series X at $35 USD a month. Phil Spencer has previously said that All Access is "critical" to their next-gen strategy.

The Series S was one of gaming's worst-kept secrets for a long time, and leaked on Xbox accessory packaging well before the design was revealed. While there has been some speculation that Microsoft intentionally let the system leak, the company has said that this is not the case.

That's the series X?!

It kind of looks like a generic looking audio speaker.

What happened to the slick design in some of the prior reveals?

As for the price ($499.) I think that is to be expected and a price point many were anticipating it would land on. If these stats are true then the ball is now in Sony's court. If Sony prices aggressively we could in many ways have a redo of this generation.

I still remember Sony execs jumping for joy in the E3 halls when they heard X box One was priced at $499 while the PS4 launched at a cool $399 (if memory serves correct.).

Sony really has a chance to give Microsoft a lot of trouble this gen if these leaks are true.

Get ready gamers... we are almost on the verge of another console war!

@videogameninja: starting to suspect that this account is some type of paid Sony marketing thing. You copy and paste your pro Sony comments on other sites too.

@50_Ft_Kingie: Oh, thank goodness.

LOL!

Honestly, I'm getting all confused by all these different versions of consoles.

-Confused, Ninja? Tell us something we don't know🙄.-

Long gone are the days of 1 console releasing on day 1 I guess. The "different/budget version" consoles didn't usually release until later in the main console's life cycle (PS4/PS4 Pro/X box One/X box One X. Perhaps this will be the way things are moving forward.

For what is being offered here the Series S is at a good price point. Will be interesting to see how Sony prices there budget friendly version in retaliation. However, what gamers are going to be more interested in is the battle between the Series X and the PS5. If what these leaks say are true about the $499 price point for the Series X Sony could slam the door shut with a more competitive price point.

Will be interesting to see how things unfold in the coming months.

I didn’t think they could make something uglier than the Series X. If this really is the design... I was wrong.

@sladakrobot: But, the Xbox One S had a more uniform color design. It was also all white With a black base. While this has a random as sin black speaker grill looking thing on the side. Which honestly should have just been white.

IMO, they should have made it look like a fatter Xbox One S.

Why the gray circular vent?

What is Sony and Microsoft In contest to see you can design the ugliest video game console?

It’s only $300? Sony can’t sell the Digital only PS5 that low.

@systemoverload: And it wouldn't make sense for them to do so because this Xbox version is much weaker than the real one. While Sony's cheaper version is only lacking a disc drive and nothing else. At best they could sell it to you for $50 less but even then they'd be throwing away money as the disc drive probably costs them less than $10 or so. But the long term benefits from having their store be the only place where you can buy games will more than make up for it so they certainly could sell it for $100 less for that reason.

@Atzenkiller: Don’t matter it’s entry video game console. The Wii was fairly weak for it’s generation but it sold very well. The XBOX series S will be playing the same 3rd party video games PS5 but with downgraded graphics.

You think everybody has a $1500 Windows PC for playing video games?

Your also assuming the only difference between the PS5 and Digital PS5 is the Optical Drive.

@systemoverload: The Wii was a gimmick console. That's the main reason why it sold well. Cause people were hyping up the useless remote controls. Which have pretty much completely disappeared by now. But of course the cheap price did play a part in it since any parent could buy their kids that thing without thinking twice about the price.

But what does owning an expensive PC have to do with anything? I prefer spending much less on a console but I'd still spend the $400 or $500 on a proper one instead of some half assed thing just to save $100 or $200. Especially when you're trying to compare this to gaming PCs this should be a no brainer.

And what other difference is there? Enlighten us as I haven't heard of any other difference whatsoever. From what I remember Sony made it clear back when they announced it that the only difference is the lacking disc drive.

@systemoverload:It's not assuming, that's pretty much what they said when they revealed the PS5.

Also, the Wii only sold well because it was marketed towards anyone with a pulse, while being $100 to $200 cheaper. Where the PS3 and Xbox 360 was marketed towards gamers.

@systemoverload: It won't be as powerful as the 499.00 version. Sony won't need to sell a digital version that cheap. Xbox doesn't have any exclusive games. Game over. Sony wins.

@Packer1080: Look at the the subscription prices mentioned in the article. You can pay it off over 12 months for only $420 total. So it seems like MS might be trying to compete with Sony the only way they can: by selling their products as cheap as possible and taking the losses. As they've already done in the past at least with the first Xbox. Which was already the most expensive console at the time.

Nailed it. Said it ages ago. Just needs Microsoft to confirm it but I’d be surprised if this is not the way it goes.

Mind you if Sony announce prices before Microsoft confirms this then they might pivot to undercut ps5.

Looks worse than XseX but better than the huge and fugly ps5.

XseX $500US

XseS $300

Seems to be a rather large fan for a system with no optical drive, but it is pretty thin.... We'll find out in a few weeks I guess.
