Xbox Series X Backwards Compatibility Will Include Almost All Xbox One Games At Launch

The only games not included are ones that require the Xbox Kinect, which won't be supported on the Xbox Series X.

Backwards compatibility has been one of the talking points around the Xbox Series X since its reveal, following the work done to enable Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to work on current-gen Xbox One consoles. With the launch of the Xbox Series X, Microsoft is aiming to have everything ready on day one.

At least, everything that doesn't require a Kinect, Microsoft's discontinued motion-tracking camera that originally shipped with the Xbox One. The Xbox Series X will support a lot of existing Xbox One accessories, including the Xbox One controller, but the Kinect is one of the rare omissions. That means backwards compatibility will exclude any games that require it.

The rest, including every Xbox One title, should be ready for the Xbox Series X launch later this year. That includes the existing backwards-compatible library of Xbox 360 and Xbox games, which Microsoft stopped adding to in the run up to its next-gen launch. As before, backwards compatibility will require no additional work from developers, with Microsoft's solution also allowing for faster loading times and better visual performance on more powerful hardware natively.

Microsoft has made a slew of announcements recently, including confirmation that xCloud will launch in September and be included for free with Game Pass Ultimate. The Xbox Game Showcase is also taking place on July 23, with the first look at Halo Infinite and numerous first-party reveals.

I thought one of the big things they were touting was backwards compatibility with ALL XBox series games, from the original XBox through the XBox One. I don't care about Kinect games- never have, never found one that wasn't a waste of money- but I thought we were supposed to be able to pop in any XBox disc or arcade title and just go.

If it's only XBox One and XBox One-backwards-compatible titles, what's the point?

Kinect was always an overpriced gimmick. I'm glad they dropped it.

Because they use emulation on a hypervisor for legacy BC games and x86-64 architecture (like a PC) for current gen games.

Yeah and the PS5 will support every PS4 game, probably even including PlayStation VR and PS Camera games, since they all connect via USB.

This is no surprise since both PS5 and XSX are just overclocked versions of the previous consoles plus SSDs.

@Elranzer: Where’d you hear that? :/ The official statement from Sony says PS5 will support the top 400 PS4 games and update more overtime.

It makes perfect sense with the arrival of the Series S and Series X.

I predict GameStop will be giving quite a good trade in credit for the Xbox One X as they would want to collect plenty of them to resell them as a Series S alternative

@cheeseweasel24: Would that make the PS4 Pro's $99 cents resell value? Ha Ha Ha
