Xbox Series X Consoles And Xbox Game Pass Subscriptions Are Getting A Price Increase

While the Xbox Series X console price remains the same in the US, the price of Xbox Game Pass is increasing across the globe.

Microsoft will be increasing the price of its Xbox Series X consoles and Game Pass subscription service across the world. While the console price will remain the same in the US, Japan, Chile, Brazil, and Colombia, in the rest of the world, the new pricing will see it match the PS5 and its recent global price hike.

"We've held on our prices for consoles for many years and have adjusted the prices to reflect the competitive conditions in each market," said Kari Perez, head of communications for Xbox, to The Verge. The new pricing will set the MSRP of the Xbox Series X to £480 in the UK, €550 in several European markets, CAD $650 in Canada, and AUD $800 in Australia as of August 1. As for the Xbox Series S, its price won't be increased and will remain the same in all markets where it's sold.

Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, on the other hand, is getting a global price increase from July 6. In the US, it'll increase from $15 a month for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to $17, and the base Xbox Game Pass subscription will go up from $10 to $11. PC Game Pass pricing will remain the same, and if you're an existing Game Pass monthly subscriber, these new changes will only take effect from August 13, or September 13 if you live in Germany.

For anyone with an annual subscription, the new pricing will only kick in once you need to renew your membership. Last year in October, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer hinted that prices would go up when he spoke at a Wall Street Journal event in southern California. "I do think at some point we'll have to raise the prices on certain things, but going into this holiday we thought it was important to maintain the prices," Spencer said at the time.

If you're looking to save some cash before these new prices kick in, now's a good time to grab a digital Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership for slightly less. These three-month deals usually retail for $45, but right now, you can top up your account for the next quarter for only $41.66.

Doesn't make sense to raise the console price. They keep everything even with the Series-S, holding back the X in most games. If you wanna raise the price, make Series X exclusives.

As for Gamepass, they're just doing this for Starfield. Mine goes until Sep 2024. After that... Adios. Crappy indies aren't worth it.

Sure they're not selling at the 500 euro mark why would they sell at 550 euro. I'm going to completely forget about Xbox now. Their summer games fest was a disaster. Starfield looks like it will be a boring procedurally generated mess. There were no interesting games at it. 550 is a major ripoff now. The components are getting older and Starfield is going to be locked at 30fps. It's just pathetic. I was considering getting an Xbox because of Halo Infinite and the older games but the newer games scheduled just don't appeal to me in the slightest. It's just not going to sell at 550 if people have any sense. The games still aren't there and it's been out nearly 3 years. Pathetically bad console generation for games, price and everything else, ripoff for nothing, most disappointing console generation ever. Say goodbye Xbox because I think this is the last nail in the coffin.

@quinnd6: Wut. Digital Foundry thought it was the best showing anyone's had in years, and regardless it was clearly strong.

It's not really a surprise they're matching Sony's price hike considering Sony loses money on PS5, prices have increased rather than falling, and Series X is substantially more expensive/higher end than PS5.

I wish Series S had a disc drive though, as the price is much better for mass market and it's a strong design for the price, but without a disc drive...

@wolfpup7: Series X is not higher end than PS5. They're about the same. I enjoy story based first person shooters. There were none. The industry is oversaturated with boring multiplayer only first person shooters with no story and Dark Souls clones. Same goes for both Sony and Microsoft by the way. It was very poor. I have a PS5 but nothing got me excited about gaming unfortunately. I think the Cyberpunk expansion was the only thing I thought was even remotely interesting looking. That was the most exciting thing for me at Gamefest an expansion pack. So anyway getting back on point if I felt Xbox Series X wasn't worth 500 because of the games then with 550 obviously I'm not going to go for it. Halo Infinite was the only appealing game since Series X came out but that's not worth spending 500 nevermind 550. It's pushed even the consideration of me buying an Xbox Series years down the line. I might buy an old secondhand Xbox one to play the older games that I like though.

@quinnd6: You're not looking hard enough if you think Halo Infinite has been the only worthwhile game. Hell, I think Obsidian alone put out two interesting games in the last year.

Frankly I don't think the games are being promoted well enough because I didn't know they existed until THIS year, and it's been like that for a lot of stuff.| There's been piles of great games, but most aren't promoted enough.

I only care about single player games (and didn't like the 3 souls-esque games I've tried) and there's a lot of stuff that's frustrating to me about games, but there's still tons of amazing games. Even Nintendo's been on a surprising roll (I thought having just a portable would help so all their development is on a single system, and I think that's paying off)

Series X is considerably higher end than PS5 and so costs more to build-if these were PCs they'd be charging hundreds more for Series X. I'm curious how much Series S costs...we know they lose money at $300 though, much less the $250 sales they've had. I kind of think that should be the price point companies were targeting.

@wolfpup7: Obsidian what? grounded and Pertiment? No I don't like those type of games. I suppose Outer Worlds looked ok but that's multiplatform and from 2019. Hi-fi rush you might be thinking of. The Xbox Series X and PS5 hardware wise are essentially the same. Some games perform better on PS5 than Series X and vice versa. So the Series X is not a higher end machine than PS5. They are on a par. More people bought PS5 than Series X because it had more games and was seen by many to be the more desirable console of the two. The Series X technically has a bit more power but the difference is negligible when it comes to game performance which is what really counts. So I wouldn't agree that the Series X is higher end than PS5 and it certainly doesn't feel like it is anyway.

@quinnd6: PS5 doesn't have more games, and has less 1st party development. They've both got piles of great games.

Series X is substantially higher end-a difference that on PC would easily cost you hundreds. There's zero question it costs more to build. On top of that, Series has multiple hardware features missing from PS5 that may help it use that power more efficiently.

If PS5 ever matches Series X, it's through poor code optimization. Reportedly some games are running generic PC code on Series and much more optimized code on PS5.

There may wind up being a worthwhile difference as the generation eventually kind of starts for real and stuff is really built for the 3 new systems.

In terms of raw power though, I think all 3 are pretty awesome...and can be used way better

@wolfpup7: They do need to utilise them better, definitely agree with you on that. Starfield is a game that I look at it and think it could be good or it could be terrible. Fallout 76 was so bad I just found it really boring and gave up. The gathering resources and crafting part was boring and forced on the player and made me stop playing. Xbox as a platform haven't been having much luck lately. Redfall was apparently a disaster. Hi-fi Rush was a positive, people seemed to enjoy that. Anyway Gears of War got me to buy an Xbox 360 back when it came out I was highly impressed. Nothing on Series X or Xbox One impressed me like that. I like Halo and Gears games and I know I'd like some of Xbox Ones earlier games Dead rising 3, Quantum Break. The last Xbox I had was the 360. So I mean I don't know, I can't think of Series X games that made me go I have to buy a Series X to play that and that looks really good. Stalker 2 actually looked really great, whenever that comes out that could be really good. Series X price increase isn't until August 1st anyway.

I expected it to happen sooner.

Now that we no longer see the $1 deals, GamePass is no better value than any other service.

GamePass is a recurring service. My water, gas, car insurance, electricity and internet bills increase. Why shouldn’t GamrPass?

As previously stated, video games are frivolous luxury toys. No one will die if they stop playing video games. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.

@GalvatronType_R: you won't die if you can't play games anymore, but for some, games are an 'escape' from reality, a hobby to let off steam from everyday life...

Everyone NEEDS hobby, regardless of what it is.

While you can't physically die from not being able to play games (or have a hobby)

what is life, if you can't enjoy something 'fun' from time to time, and are just living to pay taxes/bills/car insurance ect. And die?!

@afromakka: Maybe, or it could mean Sony made the same amount of profit because the cost of production went up.
