Xbox Series X Name Is So Goofy Even Microsoft Pokes Fun At It

Let's laugh at this Xbox Series X meme that pokes fun at how goofy the console's name is in varying contexts.

44 Comments

Microsoft was never one to stick with more expected console naming conventions, what with the Xbox One creating confusion in-store as parents fumbled figuring out which system was which. The Xbox Series X is a similarly puzzling name, so much so that even Microsoft pokes fun at it.

Over on Instagram, the Xbox account posted a brief video meme-ing the Xbox Series X's name. Set to a bouncy orchestrated composition, the video runs through several images, including the system itself, one inside of a box, and a series of ex-boxed Xbox Series X's next to their boxes... in an X.

If that sounds goofy, it's because it is.

It's worth pointing out that Xbox's naming conventions, while perplexing, placed Microsoft in a tricky position in comparison to PlayStation. Microsoft was on the Xbox 360 when the PlayStation 3 came out, then launched the Xbox One the following generation. Calling the Xbox Series X the Xbox Two (or Three) might sound inferior to Sony, which has now dropped the PlayStation 5. Microsoft probably needed a bolder way to differentiate the Series X from previous Xbox systems and Sony.

Some of the replies on the video mention Microsoft's history of "awful and confusing product names," as one Instagrammer commented, implying that this level of meme-ification is to be expected with a name like Xbox Series X. Still, most comments are from users begging to know when they can buy one because they've "been waiting almost a year" for them to be restocked.

Though they're hard to find in large part because of the ongoing semiconductor shortage, a few stores tend to replenish their inventory semi-regularly. Be sure to check out our Xbox Series X|S restock guide to learn when retailers will have them back on shelves and which spots to go to.

In other Xbox news, Microsoft has taken the meme to its logical next step with a mini fridge based on the console, which will be available sometime this holiday season.

But don't mention Craig. They haven't acknowledged a peep of that name in 12 months. So much for them embracing their memes.

Then again, they haven't showed a shred of campaign gameplay from Halo 6 in 12 months either lol. You think they would with the game going gold in about 8 weeks time.

XBOG = XB1

XB360 = XB2

XB1 = Xb3

XB1x = XB4 (because it had a leap of true power)

XBsX/S= XB5......

there your all caught up to Sony....for F sakes your name brand is not something you make fun of! Fire your marketing team & lets start fresh & not aim for the title of most ridiculous names & be a mockery!

@just1mohr: Can't agree with the XB1X. That would make the PS5=PS6 by that logic.

The processor was still garbage. :/

The GPU was much improved but basically amounted to a resolution boost.

It was bad enough on Xbox One to call the enhanced models "X" and "S", since those letters sound too similar to each other and have no meaning at all, so what does Microsoft do? The same thing again, except change the "One" to "Series", which doesn't exactly make it sound like a new console since the word "Series" is more like a classification or category. Take for example, Honda engines. They have different engines in "Series" such as the D-series engines. There are differences between the D-series engines, but for the most part they're very similar inline 4-cylinder engines. So the Xbox "Series X" based on the name gives the impression it's just an different model of the "One X", in a similar way the Xbox 360 slim was just a different model of the 360 with some enhancements but ultimately still the same experience when it comes to playing games.

@chronogos: Agreed. It seems they wanted to stay in line with that eco-system pitch, family of consoles, cross-gen etc. They marketed the One X as an early next-gen console, which it still is and will be for quite some time. For better or worse, I guess.

this is hilarious but sad at the same time but hilarious nonetheless.

then again, I would've preferred a better naming scheme. a joke's only as funny as you're in the know, it's confusing for the average parent and that's your target audience tbh. not ppl reading gaming news every other day. not every parent has the desire to talk to sale staff. imagine the confusion you're causing on sales-floors. that's bad marketing.

to us it really doesn't matter, it could be called donner383834, we would memorize it somehow.

imagine if the next one will be called Xbox X. Sony has it so much easier

Still think they should have gone with Xbox 360 Delta.

If you don't get it, look at a playstation controller.

Yep, confusing enough name that the discontinued Xbox One X is now also being scalped, used, often for ~$700 lmao

Doesn't help that, for some reason, MS decided it was important for the Series X to have the same outward visual aesthetic as the One X, just different dimensions. So if an online shopper is not looking and reading carefully, Series X and One X listings might appear to be the same thing -______-

@Spartan_418: Microsoft really need to either start giving their consoles names, or just number them! They really missed an awesome opportunity to just name the One X "Scorpio". Scorpio is a really cool-sounding name, and just imagine how awesome it would have been if there was a Scorpion edition Scoripo complete with Sorpion decals, Mortal Kombat SFX when powering on/off the console, and MK11 preinstalled?!

@chronogos: Phil talked about the name Scorpio few years ago and how it would be a nightmare to trademark that name

Weren't people calling it the X box tower before it was released?

I remember people calling it the X box SEX, the X box ghetto blaster, and some other choice names, lol.

At least Microsoft can poke fun at themselves.

@videogameninja: There's the Xbox 360 Model E, so you could line up your entertainment console shelf with the Xbox One S, Xbox 360 Series E, Xbox Series X and have the past 3 generations of Xbox S/E/X making for a nice SEX shelf oh yeahh.

@videogameninja: I'm surprised X-sex isn't the go-to name for the Series X on the internet. It's literally how you pronounce XSX. You don't even have to be dirty about it. That's just how you have to say it. It's like people are avoiding that simply because of how obvious it is.

At this point, I just consider the Xbox as the "low budget PC gaming". That's what it is really, the bare minimum to play current multiplatform games. Other multimedia functions are usually better realized on PCs and smartphones, but consoles nowadays can also play video, music and mainstream apps. In the end, the only "different" brands in this market are Nintendo and Sony because of their exclusives, the Xbox is a part of a big ecosystem. As a PC owner, I have zero interest in buying a Xbox and Microsoft most likely don't give a damn, they want to invade everything with their stupid branding

@gleencross: The only kind of PC you're gonna buy with $300 is an average laptop only good for web browsing, looking at videos of other people playing PC games!

@gleencross: Bare minimum? You're not gonna get anywhere near Series X-level performance on a $500 PC lol.

The actual bare minimum might be the One S, where you'll get blurry image quality and choppy performance, but most multiplatform games are still being released on it

@Spartan_418: Right now, and with the current stock shortages, that's true.

But looking ahead, there are hardware developments right around the corner that will change that very quickly. There are some surprisingly large leaps coming in the near future. And these prices are unusual, so they shouldn't last. He might not be right as of this moment, but he will be, possibly in the next year or two. And that's just how PC gaming is.

@Barighm: Exactly, even the most "humble" PC usually "breaks even" the expenses of consoles in about 3, 4 years or so. Especially if the owner is smart enough to pick promotions on Steam (and now Epic) + don't expend money towards online services... which is ridiculous, the fact sony, microsoft and nintendo charges a monthly fee to provide online features to their games is simply preposterous. But even so, we are going through strange times, the pandemic crisis changed a lot of things. Consoles do look more valuable now (in the literal sense), but at the same time there's no games, nothing. So it's foolish to pay 500 bucks on a new hardware that does not provide any kind of new software, were is the logic? You are going to pay 500 bucks on a PS5 to play Ghost of Tsushima again? Why not wait and see, instead of showing desperation and anxiety?
