Xbox Series X: Official Specs, Target Performance, And More Revealed

Microsoft has dug deep into the internals of the Xbox Series X

Microsoft has revealed numerous new details regarding all the technical aspects of its upcoming Xbox Series X in an Xbox Wire post an accompanying report from Digital Foundry. Included is the first full specifications sheet for the new console, confirming CPU and GPU speeds, storage requirements, and target performance metrics.

The Xbox Series X will feature 12 teraflops of performance, built off AMD's new RDNA 2 architecture. The GPU will feature 16GB of GDDR6 memory across a variable memory bus--10GB will run at 560GB/s, while the remaining 6GB will run at a slower 330GB/s. The spec sheet also confirms that the Series X will support two types of external memory, allowing you to expand SSD storage with a proprietary drive from Seagate or store games on an external HDD (in the same way as the Xbox One).

Looks like Microsoft took the gold medal on hardware in this round. It'll be interesting if they can win back the developers, especially the smaller ones that made the 360 so popular.

Y'all might want a PC by the time prices are announced for these consoles. The more you pay for a console, the less it makes sense to not get a PC (PC is meant to be a higher initial investment but becomes cheaper over time). Fortunately for all of us, the stronger these consoles are, the more developers will focus on pushing graphics and other intensive features into all their games (regardless of platform). Meaning far more ray tracing games, more games with higher multithread support, etc.

Took 3 generations for consoles to become more powerful than a PC i put together ages ago. Not too impressive.

Seems pretty pointless these days to get a console, for a bit more you can just get a PC that destroys it and then you are set for another 2+ generations.

I can't believe they only give you a 1tb ssd also, that is a total joke of hardware for 2020, how many AAA games can you even install on that? Like 5-6?

@Yams1980: Just what i need a high end PC to play such exclusive content like wing commander from 1997. no thanks i get the same games and content in a much more comfortable setting on the couch and play the same games on my 70" 4k tv.

@civilenginerd: PC has far more exclusives than all consoles combined. Not to mention Microsoft exclusives are obviously available on PC and PS Now is compatible on PC as well making much of PS exclusives playable as well (if you are willing to wait a while).

Additionally, I actually use my PC on my 4K TV in the living room as well. Main reason was so I could leverage room scale VR, but I can still comfortably play regular games on my couch as well with a controller or my lapboard (keyboard and mouse pad built for couch gaming).

I'm not saying consoles aren't worth getting. In the past, they have always offered solid performance for a reasonable price. However, they seem to be aiming for a much higher end performance, which is going to make the price less reasonable. So much so that it might be more cost effective to get a PC if power is that important to you. I personally prefer consoles over gaming laptops though (gaming laptops are not cost effective) and consoles are just as mobile as them.

@gamer112696: PC has more exclusives because 99.9% of them are asset flip garbage, not real games. There are a handful of actual, decent exclusives on PC.

@civilenginerd: You can run a PC on a 70 inch tv if you wanted to, I actually did it a bit in the past to slum it at 60fps ... But I have no idea why anyone would still want to play a game on a standard 16:9 tv no matter how big it is... lacks too much technology that PC monitors have.

Ultrawide is the future and these consoles won't support that as far as I can tell.

My biggest problem with Xbox series X is how it's insides are meshed together, on papper it's something a hobbiest would build, 2 slabs of PCB screwed to a rack, then a unnecessary drive bay, huge fan, and crazy ass heat sink, geez.

The developers kit Xbox series X is in the form factor of the Xbox one X, yet the series X consumer addition is the equivalent to two GameCubes slapped on top of each other.

The specs are lovely, the design factors something else to be desired as a pc, couldn't imagine a console (I guess my gripe started when I noticed the inside of the console/pc hybrid) abomination. Now for Sony abomination, probably a 3 wheel trycicle.

Getting that sex box through the airport in a bags now officially a real pain the ass compared to the one x.

Oh well best get use to it, but love the specs.

@Crazy_sahara: The Sex Box's name was Sony, so its probably better to refer to the PlayStation as the Sex Box. If you weren't trying to reference the Family Guy episode, then disregard my comment lol

With the power of this machine it would able to run the Oculus Rift S/Valve index etc.

They should have put a display port connection on the front to allow use with VR.

That would have sold many more units.

@spartaspice: One of the main reasons I switched to PC. Xbox pissed me off hard when they got me all hyped up for compatibility with PC based VR headsets with the announcement of the One X, and then changed their mind. And it doesn't look like Xbox is changing their stance on VR anytime soon. PS VR is your best bet for the cheapest VR gaming experience, but if you don't have a PS4 and are not looking to switch to PC, Oculus Quest is the best alternative.

If xbox supported VR headsets it would make adoption a lot faster.

@spartaspice: Awesome! Me too. Got a Vive Pro though. Always good to hear of other people with VR headsets. I totally agree if Xbox supported it, adoption would speed way up. PS VR has sold more than all headsets combined because every PS4 is capable of running it (many people's PCs aren't strong enough). And the more people that get into VR, the better it is for us. More games, longer games, and better headsets.

$799, us, international $1099 no joke. Serious hardware like that capable of running 3d max, blender, daw, substance painter, photo shop, comes with a costly tag, and those specs clearly are designed for more then gaming infact it's cable of all.

The only thing it cannot do is render 8k assets smoothly, and play 8k with raytracing enabled at 8k at 120 frames. There will be trade offs the the specs clearly are designed for apples playbook (when they released their g4 and box like shredder) actually looks like play card from apples playbook.

@Crazy_sahara: It wont be that expensive. Seeing as youd still pay more to build an equivalent PC, us still pay 900 bucks for it gladly, but the majority of gamers wont.

Ms have money to burn. They'll be getting components at a reduced price through high volume buying and take a hit on the console, or release it at cost.

I'd say 599.

@sealionact: $499. You can quote me on that when they reveal that price. :)

You guys crack me up anyway. You cannot compare a high volume console hardware pricing to that of a small volume PC component maker. The individual prices for components are higher due to small batches and more cost to produce. Volume production for consoles lowers the prices by a LOT. The more hardware you make the less it costs you to make it. Simple economics.

@nargg: Hey, I'd be delighted. Even at 599 - 699. Theres a lot more expensive components in these consoles than before though. More gddr, a 1tb ssd, a decent cpu and a more or less top of the line gpu. Hope your right.

@sealionact: $599 with those specs not even possible, you're refering to the standard version of series X not the pro version.

Given the Xbox one X was modified to push hardware for 2014, the price was still high with dated components in 2017

So expect this to be much higher with custom components.

X1X was anything but expensive at the time based on performance. In fact, you'd have to spend nearly double to build a pc with the same performance and components....a 4k drive alone cost 299 bucks.

@jarobusa: Please? Ya gotta live with that console for the next 5-7 years. PC Gamers will have new Monster Nvidia GPUs this year, never mind the GPUs after that and you'll still be stuck with the same console. Don't forget that this may be the last generation of console hardware period. AMD is also supplying GPUs for the future of game streaming which is basically a console.

@lonesamurai00: Why are you shifting goalposts? Someone laughably described xsx as a budget to mid level PC, and was put in place...

As to your point, console owners dont have to upgrade every 5-7 years. They'll be playing the latest AAA games in 7 years time with the same hardware...PC gamers wont.

@sealionact: Console gamers don't have to upgrade because they can't upgrade for year to come. You make it sound like a choice and it isn't. My point is that you will be sitting on this hardware for a long long time.

Goalposts only move for PC Gamers. For console gamers they can't shift because of the snapshot technology being used. Furthermore the Intel + Nvidia combination remains the best option for gaming period.

@lonesamurai00: That's why I buy a console and gave up on PC gaming. I don't have to look up minimum requirements, recommended requirements, which game store it's on and so on. I dont have to think about parity, where some PCs have greater draw distance in mp games. I dont have games spoilt by wallhacks and aimbots. Going console was a choice, and I have the choice to go back to pc gaming if I want.

@sealionact: Those reasons are completely understandable. I mean they're your reasons and that's all that matters for you I am sure. Seems most of your gripes are with mp games, and I can't relate to gripes about them because I detest online gaming. The only two online games that play at all I don't have to worry about issues (Star Citizen, and iRacing). These two games are clean and respectful. Besides that no other mp games are worth my time.

As for sysreqs I have never gone by them as I always have the most capable hardware, at least in my Gaming system so again I can't relate to that. All I know is that I like having the option to upgrade, or exchange damaged parts using the convenience of cross shipping which significantly decreases downtime, as opposed to shipping out a whole console and paying a fee to one company for their product which could be at any wild price, but that's me.

@Crazy_sahara: You don't know a lot about this stuff do you? The fact that they are moving to a 10nm process will make them much cheaper to manufacture and produce, as such customers will reap the benefits.

From the news that I am hearing it's you who may be paying through the nose for these things, as the virus may effect additional cost for the consoles, and you may not even get them this year.

There's no way this console won't cost a pair of arms at launch.

I'm feeling this will be a repeat of the PS3's launch price. If it costs anywhere below $499 I'll be very, extremely surprised and they'd be selling them at a loss.

@rekonym: Don't compare high volume console production costs to single computer component low volume production. Low volume costs more to make. Consoles are cheaper simply due to design, volume and speed of production. It's not going to break any gamer's bank account.

@rekonym: this will cost no more than 500 bucks. For Microsoft, it is all about software now. Any amount of money they lose on this hardware they'll more than make up for with software sales and subscriptions. This is the direction Microsoft has been going in since Spencer took over as head of Xbox, so I'm surprised people still make these types of comments as if this is 2005.

That's more TFLOPs than RTX 2080, and almost as much as 2080Ti. How much is this going to cost?

These specs are looking very expensive.

@firedrakes: You can use external to store games. Swap the game into internal to play, or get an expansion card.

Not sure what else ms could have done other than double the internal storage and make the console even more expensive.

It's so goofy how consoles measure gfx-cards in flops instead of bytes.

Either way though, these specs are pretty good, but I hope they get some great contracts, this thing isn't going to be no mere $400
