Xbox Series X|S Has Outsold PS5 In Japan Again

Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S consoles have beaten PS5 sales figures for the second time this year.

For the second time, the Xbox Series X|S consoles have outsold the PS5 in Japan. Usually seen as having a home ground advantage in Japan, the PS5 only managed to shift 3,035 units--a combined total of both the disc and digital edition--in the week beginning on June 13, while the Xbox Series X sold through 3,272 units.

It's worth noting that the ongoing semiconductor shortage has resulted in supply constraints for both consoles not only in Japan but across the world as well. So while unusual, this appears to be more of a supply-based anomaly rather than a sudden, genuine change in consumer interest.

According to Famitsu (via GamesRadar), the Xbox Series S sold 3,423 units in that week as well. When split up, the disc-based PS5 sold a total of 2,371 units and the cheaper all-digital version only managed to sell 664 units. This is the second time that Microsoft has outsold the PS5 in Japan, as the Xbox Series S on its own beat the PS5's sales figures by 6,120 sales to 2,963 back in May.

Even with the occasional week where Microsoft comes out on top, Sony is still enjoying positive sales figures for the PS5 lately. Sony confirmed at the start of June that PS5 sales have surpassed 20 million units sold since launch in November 2020, and has promised a "significant ramp-up" in PS5 production for 2022 to help meet demand.

Sony has estimated that it will sell 18 million PS5 consoles during the fiscal year that began April 1 and runs through March 31, 2023, with this number being based on the company's "current visibility" into parts procurement. If you're looking to acquire your own PS5 console, you can check out our PS5 restock feature to see when fresh supplies of the device are in stock.

Microsoft have delivered a pair of amazing consoles with the Series X/S right along with a fantastic service with GamePass...and Japan have certainly noticed it.

WOW! That’s pretty amazing considering Xbox has never really done well in Japan. Microsoft have built two very appealing consoles with great services it’s that simple!

@ceelogreen94: Not for the better. Japan prefers to not manufacture in China, hence, Sony's woes.

Ugh. I hate titles like this. Disrespectful clickbait.
It's a terrible representation of the information, even within just a handful of words.
Things to watch for when ingesting news like this, semiconductor shortage aside:

1. This is over an arbitrary 7-day period. Why not 7 hours? Or 7 minutes?
A quarter, or at least a month, might've actually meant something.

2. The XBOX Series S is a far cheaper console than the PS5,
further reducing the value of the information and thus the article.

3. The audience for a product like this is finite so watch out for confirmation bias.
i.e. If everyone already has a PS5, sales drop to zero and it looks like a failure.

@naryanrobinson: Although you do have a point, you also don't. Yes, it's just a week, and just the second week for the whole year, but it's not "an arbitrary 7-day period", sales are always measured in units per week, month, quarter and year. Yes, the Series S is cheaper than the PS5, but both the Series S and the Series X, individually, beat the PS5 (3000 PS5, 3200 XSX and 3400 XSS) during this specific week. And yes, the audience is technically finite, but everyone knows this gen consoles are constrained by supply, and there is a huge unserved demand. Not to mention "sales dropping to zero" has literally never happened before new generations are launched.

@naryanrobinson: I agree with you, but regarding point #2 I'd add that it was the norm during the previous generation to compare sales even though the PS4 was way cheaper than the OG Xbox One and it is sad to see this trend has carried over to this generation

If it's a supply constraint and neither product is able to meet demand, then all this really means is that XBox supplied more consoles to Japan than Sony did. It has nothing to do with Japan consumer interest shifting from Playstation to Xbox.

@joejoe1639: You would also have to ignore that PS sales are dramatically down because Japanese gamers are not focused on buying consoles period. Japanese gamers have transitioned to mobile. Sony could easily put more consoles into the Japanese market, definitely more than few thousand they are selling weekly if they wanted to (i.e. they put almost 5 x that in the US, 6 x that in EU) but Sony doesn't because demand is really not there, it is elsewhere. You could see it happening last gen as well. In Japan Nintendo is cleaning Sony's clock and that isn't going to change. The Switch is the go-to machine because of its portability. Mobile (i.e. phones) are the real gaming rage not big devices stuck attached to a TV. And that won't' change no matter if PS starts to flood the Japanese market or not. If that happens it just be a glut of PS devices. Sony knows this, that is why they have become increasingly Western focused over recent years. Microsoft also knows that is why they have built out their cloud services in the region to support that mobile gaming lifestyle that is now so prevalent in Asia.

Another reason Sony is focused on the West (besides being where they really make their money and lack of Japanese interest in consoles) is that Xbox Series is not Xbox One. This is not going to be a 2+ to 1 gen. Sony is looking at a very close gen on hardware sales and very tough MS to beat on other endpoints (i.e PC, streaming, mobile). Xbox has beaten PS regularly in the US this year and is often very close monthly in the EU. You don't see a large sales gap between the two, no matter who puts more on the shelves. The fact is the only reason Sony has a 4 million lead is because they put more on the shelves at the start of the gen because PS5 started production 3+ months earlier than the Series. That gave them millions more to sell in the first quarter. Then MS/Xbox took the time from April to August of 2021 to convert Xcloud blades from Xbox One S to Series X. That took millions of SX APUs away from consumer devices during that time. As soon as Microsoft finished their Xcloud update they then upped Series S production and all the Series X APUs made were put into consoles. Which started to affect overall monthly sale numbers as we started to see happen around December '21 and has continued onward from there.

At some point soon if Sony is planning to have a competitive cloud service, they too will have to take PS5 APUs (and other parts) away from consumer devices to build out those cloud servers. Especially with PS Now 2.0 (PS+ Premium) now being touted. I can't see them waiting another year or two to do it. Especially as PS5 only games start becoming more prevalent by both first-party and third-party. They won't be able to offer a streaming option for PS5 games without updating those servers. It is not a short process (i.e. 6+ months). And the chip shortage is more than likely going to go on until sometime 2024. So, it will affect PS console output just like it did Xbox in 2021.

Interesting, small figures, but the Series X outselling the PS5 by itself is interesting for sure. Microsoft has been making a lot of moves to appeal to Japanese gamers. It's a positive sign for Xbox all around really. You can take the console war out of it and still they have said that Xbox Series S and X have already outsold the lifetime total of Xbox Ones sold in Japan last gen.

Good to see, competition is always good for the market.

Never been a fan of one box over another but these days I don't really have a reason to go with Playstation. Most of the games I care about are available on all systems (including PC) or exclusive Xbox now (thinking of Bethesda). Better alignment with PC and Xbox games is nice too. Really the way to go is PC if have the bucks and/or Xbox.

@davidb50100: Honestly, that's how it's starting to look these days. You're either a western gamer and should go PC, or you're a handheld gamer and should go Nintendo (or mobile, if you're crazy). I actually predicted it would be traditional console gaming that would go extinct.

@Barighm: Not true the X is a little harder to find but they are out there. In this case this is Just Microsoft outdoing Sony in every way possible right now. Sony was late to the game as usual when it comes to catching up with the times and trends of what gamers what going forward as Microsoft has been showing gamers the possibilities of what gaming can be with Game Pass. No wants to buy a $70 game with no replay value or a game that might be just be ok these days, when they can pay $15.00 dollars and have day and date games when they drop and never have to worry about spending money on a bad exclusive.

@ceelogreen94: ...in Japan. More of the sales are S series in Japan. Context, dude. Did you not read the article?

"No wants to buy a $70 game with no replay value"

Stop buying crappy Activision and Ubisoft games day 1? Seriously, if you're having trouble finding replayable games on sale, then you're just not looking. And get a rental service. There is no excuse for "accidentally" ending up with a bad exclusive.

"Microsoft has been showing gamers the possibilities of what gaming can be with Game Pass."

Like turning your roster of steadily weakening exclusives into live service crap? Or filling up with indies you can buy at Steam for dirt cheap during a sale? Or losing access to all of your games whenever someone spills their coffee on a server at MS?

Look, it's a digital gaming service that wins on being dirt cheap. It's a good strategy, I respect that, but it's still a digital gaming service. You still don't actually own your games and you still have to deal with all that MS Store stuff. It's a nice rental service for PC games, but cut out the used car salesman spiel. It isn't the second coming, and I can think of a few companies who could blow MS away if they were to ever utilize their catalogue in the same fashion.

@Barighm: Don't waste your time with this one, he's yet another Xbox gamer who is more interested in console wars than gaming itself.

Even without supply issues, Japan has been losing interest in PlayStation for years, especially with them censoring games for the Japanese market.

@Mraou: Most of their big games are western style games too at the moment. They have secured Sqaure exclusivity at the moment, but Sony Studio's itself doesn't seem to put out a lot of Japan centric games that I'm aware of.

@mooglestar: I'll repeat what I wrote below.

Yes there are semiconductor shortages but that doesn't directly corelate to there currently being insufficient PS5 stock in Japan, especially when considering how truly low these numbers are.

Until there are real world numbers for stock levels in Japan this is just an assumption.

@tbird7586: excuses? Look at ps4 vs Xbox one. If there was 7000 ps5 7000 ps5 would sell. It still sold out in min. Xbox is doing great with the s because it's cheap and small.

Sony did not dwindle in Japan. Console market did. Look at switch sales. Japan loves it on the go. If Sony sold another hand held we would see this. Until then Xbox still has alot to prove to the world after Xbox one. But Xbox was doing its own thing last gen to get were they are now. Buying first party all gen long because 360 at the end let them go. Phil is doing the best so far and Xbox is finally competing with sony.

@tbird7586: I just figured it's because Japan is handheld dominant and Sony hasn't released a new handheld in decades and the S, being a digital console, syncs up nicely with mobile gaming due to GP. But hey, I'm only a professional economist and corporate researcher, what do I know?

@thecupidstunts: No, the S uses cheaper components from a previous die. Its materials are more prevalent and easier to manufacture. The S is also a digital centric console and Japan is increasingly digital gaming orientated, so the games would sync up with their mobiles and GamePass. That's why the S makes up the bulk of the sales.

@thecupidstunts: They don't, but there is still that hardcore gaming crowd to please and that market hasn't been satisfied so far. Since nobody can find a PS5, and they REALLY care about size over there, the more compact, cheaper, and readily available S comes off as the better alternative.

@thecupidstunts: The point is, the sales argument is meaningless, and has been from the start, due to shortages. PS5 is outselling Xbox worldwide by roughly five million, which is a lot more, but that still doesn't really matter when both consoles are jumping off the shelves the moment they arrive.
