Xbox Teases "New Microsoft Technologies," Says 2019 Is "Shaping Up Nicely"

Microsoft teases what's on tap in 2019 and beyond.

There are always more games on the horizon, and now Microsoft has teased what's coming next for its portfolio. In a blog post, Microsoft offered what it called a "hot tease" of what fans can expect in the time ahead.

Starting with 2019 games, Xbox fans have titles like Crackdown 3, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Gears 5, and Minecraft: Dungeons to look forward to. Of note, all of these games--and all future first-party titles from Microsoft--are included with the price of an Xbox Game Pass membership.

Now Playing: Xbox Teases New Games And New "Technologies" - GS News Update

"2019 is shaping up nicely for Xbox, PC and mobile gamers alike," Microsoft said.

Also in 2019 Microsoft will release a significant new update for Sea of Thieves, called The Arena, which adds a competitive mode.

In addition to all of these games and the new Sea of Thieves expansion, Microsoft teased future releases from its studios around the world. Microsoft said delivering "new Microsoft technologies" is one part of the company's ambition going forward.

"And we can't wait to show you what all the Microsoft Studios development teams are working on. We’re focused on implementing new Microsoft technologies, delivering content for new platforms and services like Xbox Game Pass, and creating exclusive games that turn players into loyal Xbox fans," Microsoft said. "We are committed to expanding the Microsoft Studios franchises players already love and investing in new, exclusive content for every type of gamer. We're excited to see the teams maximize their potential at Microsoft and can't wait for what the future has in store."

Last year, Microsoft invested in its future by acquiring six studios and creating an all-new one. At E3, Microsoft announced that it acquired Playground Games (Forza Horizon), Compulsion Games (We Happy Few), Ninja Theory (Hellblade), and Undead Labs (State of Decay). At Microsoft's X018 event in Mexico City, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment (Fallout: New Vegas) and inXile Entertainment (Wasteland 3). As for new studio, The Initiative is based in the Los Angeles area, and it's staffed by Red Dead Redemption's writer/designer and many other big names.

Outside of games, Microsoft is working on a game-streaming service that will let you play console-level Halo on your phone, while the company is also making a Halo TV show and a Gears of War movie. Additionally, Microsoft is working on multiple new Xbox consoles.

What games and technologies are you hoping to see from Microsoft in 2019? Let us know in the comments below!

Well, then perhaps Microsoft will finally be able to make a good game after all unless RDII wasn't your cup of tea. Meanwhile I'm sticking to PS4 and PSVR headset for a while to come. Microsoft actually starting to hire GOOD writers? What's next? Capcom doing the same? Nah, never gonna happen. Good writing and good stories cost good money and requires thinking. Can Microsoft really do that? We'll see.

I read this and remember in 2014 when people were saying "the investors want the Xbox division sold!!; Xbox division isn't going to last!!!" I always said and still do say, this isn't a sprint, it isn't about "winning a gen". Its a business and that is a marathon. Future looks good for gamers.

I’m pumped they have both Undead Labs and InXile... they’re smaller studios but badass in their own right. With Microsoft backing, their respective major titles (State of Decay & Wasteland 2/3) will soarrrrr. Super pumped!!

Don’t botch it guys!!

@badbrad1961: Hey I like Dwayne Johnson! Have you seen Ballers? He's fantastic in it - shows he has real acting chops and a little range. But he's also kinda typecast most of the time. DOOM, Fast and Furious... he's usually the same person in a fair amount of his work so I get that some people aren't as hyped on him.

Just talk, like always.. For playing games you have to go somewhere else. Anywhere but MS.

Such a shame.

Why dont you let us decide if 2019 is shaping up nicely for xbox fans, Microsoft, because you'd say every year prior was a good year for fans, and I'd call bull.

I love my PS4 and PSVR helmet and playing Skyrim VR. I had an Xbox One and got rid of it fast to exchange for a PS4. And Xbox has no VR. It's behind the times. Except for Gears, their exclusives s*ck.

@jgarbuz: I get that the Xbox exclusives aren't blowing any doors off but to say they "suck" dramatic. Yes, Gears is good (though I think it's not nearly as good as it was back during GoW2 days), but Halo 5 was OK, Sea of Thieves is OK, Ori is good, Sunset Overdrive was good, Halo Wars 2 was good, State of Decay is OK, Crackdown 3 is TBD, Forza/Forza Horizon is really good (but isn't a wide appeal genre), Titanfall was great (3rd party exclusive), Tomb Raider is good (though it's not permanently exclusive but timed and Microsoft has a big hand in some of the development so they get credit as a result). So to say these games suck is a major overreach. But I could agree with you if you said that Xbox has under-delivered on exclusives with the Xbox One. Titanfall was the biggest success and it wasn't a Microsoft internally-developed title. But the good news is that Microsoft is learning its lesson. They've hinted at big new IPs from talented, diverse internal studios that will be doing more to make Xbox the best place to play. I've been trying to follow the reboot of Fable and that could be a huge renovation project that finally offers something that can challenge Zelda but on Xbox. There's also the very real fact that Halo is changing and is being modernized with Infinite which is a BIG deal because the formula has decayed in modern gaming. But I'm excited for the titles being built by Playground Games (tied to Fable), Ninja Theory, The Initiative (which had a super tease a while back for a big IP being developed), inXile Entertainment, Compulsion Games (We Happy Few is their most recent title), and now they have Undead Labs too. Yes, we have to wait and see if any of the acquisitions pan out with actual games that matter but it's promising.

As for VR - VR is a terrible thing to compare right now. VR has no killer apps and is still a little ways away in terms of "ready for prime time". PSVR is a demo show, not a legit gaming experience - not yet. But Microsoft isn't vacant in that space, it's just not ready for anyone to come in. Sony was idiotic to try and get in on that space. They've spent tons of money on first-party hardware when equal or greater hardware was already being made for multi-platform use and now they've got a fancy piece of hardware that doesn't off a premiere VR experience without games to sell the hardware. That's like Nintendo making a new console and never selling a new Mario, Zelda, or Smash Bros game - your sales WILL tumble because there's nothing to hype about. VR will eventually catch on but it's not there yet. You never want to be too early to the game and Microsoft knows that better than anyone with mobile phones. They got in so early and the game changed fast and they had a hard time adapting and competing. Sony could suffer the same fate and to say Microsoft is "behind the times" is foolish. Just say you don't like what Xbox One ended up being and you'll find a lot of agreement and you'll be spot-on from a factual standpoint. But Xbox has a better cloud system, better OS, better hardware, and brighter future than Sony (just go read any of the numerous articles published in January that are super hyped over what Xbox has on the horizon).

@thisistheslam: When I bought the Xbox One a few years back I wanted to play Halo 5 and Gears, and rented from Gamefly and it wouldn't run them. It wouldn't run half the discs that I rented, Those were the only two "exclusives" that I cared about, but they wouldn't run. Didn't care for Sunset Overdrive. Not my kind of game. I've known Microsoft since 1983 and it never learns its lessons, but that doesn't keep people from buying in. Had the original Xbox then the 360 and had my share of problems Had three of them. Still play a few games on it But never had a problem with any Playstation hardware. On my PS4 I only had one problem were a game on disc wouldn't run, but I think it was the fault of a damaged disc.

I didn't like the Xbox One GUI interface and hated the controller, which as as fat as the original Xbox controller from 15 years ago and drains electron like a sieve. With PS4 and PSVR so far after three years I've had zero problems. And I bought it with Uncharted 4 which was my kind of game. I also played Skyrim VR. YOu haven't played Skyrim if you haven't played it in virtual reality. They don't even have VR. I don't know why anyone buys it but each to their own. I bought it and got rid with in less than two months and thankfully was able not lose too much by getting the PS4 with Uncharted 4 instead. That's all.

For 2019, wanna see more interesting line up games. Games, Games, Games!!!

Don’t think this is coming yet in 2019, but definitely in the near future. Looking forward to seeing Ray Tracing being implemented, more games hitting 60FPS while running on 4K HDR.

@mugg1n10: Those fighter games don't have a ton of competition. Soul Caliber, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Super Smash Bros all thrive because they're polished experiences that appeal to an audience that's still somewhat large, don't have loads of competition like shooters and RPGs, and find its roots from Street Fighter - an era that really propped up those kinds of games via arcades. Tons of buzz still out there and just look at the buzz for the new Mortal Kombat lately. They make those games because they sell.

Give us the updated Elite controller with Bluetooth

And either confirm VR headset support for One X, or confirm that VR is skipping this gen but will be supported by the next console

@Spartan_418: Totally agree on an updated Elite Controller, but one that's not $150 and can be serviced for cheap when/if things go bad. I have 2 Elite controllers and one is broken down now because it had major stick drift and I tried to fix it and ended up getting something crossed and now the Y button is almosts permanently being engaged somehow. The other has the exact same problem but I was able to replace the same motors and get a fairly good outcome: $15 to fix both joysticks and keep my controller in operating condition (though one of the sticks has some weird "ghosting" effect on occasion). Microsoft only warrantied these controllers for 3 months when they should have warrantied them for 1-2 years, promising to replace motors or buttons for a small fee. I'd happily pay Microsoft $30 with shipping for them to fix issues with the internal hardware on each of my Elite controllers because I made the sizable investment to begin with and really dig the triggers. But that's really the reason I bought the controllers: the triggers. Microsoft really needs to consider making a new controller that includes extra buttons because RPGs are becoming more and more prominent on consoles and complex games benefit from accessible, sensible input options. Just having 2 triggers makes a world of difference if they can be mapped as individual buttons so that you have X,A,B,Y and maybe Z and V with the extra triggers/buttons.

@agravier: Yeah really just wish they would confirm either way. When they first announced the X, under the Scorpio code name, one of its prominent features was "high-fidelity VR". But when they fully revealed it as the One X, they mysteriously stopped talking about VR support.

Those who have used the Rift and Vive on PC would not make the comparison to the Kinect or dismiss it as a useless gimmick or anything like that; if an Xbox console had VR headset support, it should be a fairly simple matter of games that support VR on PC having the same functionality on Xbox

I love Xbox and the Xbox community. BUT... I have really grown tired or impatient on exclusives that appeal to me. The exclusives that have been released except for the Forza games have either just not appealed to me or they weren't that great in my opinion. And as much as I want Xbox to succeed and see it's glory days of the 360 era again, I don't see it happening. I also feel like as many times as Crackdown has been delayed, I feel like it will fall flat. It's great that MS has acquired all these studios, but as many have pointed out, it will be at least a few years before we see the fruits of their labor. The only reason I've stayed with Xbox as long as I have is that I still have some friends who play Xbox exclusively. But, I have started playing on my PS4 a lot more, and the exclusives that have come out on PS4 are way more appealing to me.

It took Phil Spencer 3 years to work out his games console is supposed to have games lol.

All six of the newly acquired studios have at least one game slated to release in 2019. They could be delayed, but that's what they're aiming for. I'm looking forward to Outer Worlds from Obsidian (Q4 2019).

@blueinheaven: both of you are right. Microsoft knows it lost this third round of the race by a large margin. Xbox one had a terrible launch (probably one of the worst in history) and MS spent some five years trying to fix it. Then, after they recovered their console (and arguably have the best one in the market right now with the X1X), they turned to games by bolstering their first-party studios department. It is too late to salvage this round, the studios acquisition is to have a better launch on the next one, from 2020~21 on.

@MigGui: Yep obviously buying these studios is an investment in the future and it's the right thing to do but it's still crazy to me that a company with videogame hardware almost completely ignores creating its own IP's and developing its existing ones in a vaguely convincing fashion. Halo 5 was just shocking outside of MP as an i.e.

They need new management staff their current team simply haven't got a clue.

@blueinheaven: They probably spent most of their resources trying to save the console itself after the disastrous launch and the kinect fiasco. I am guessing they didn't buy studios or develop games for the console due to budget concerns, I'd say MS has a tough budget grip on the xbox division. They also built up some games-as-a-service platforms with the backwards compatibility and the gamepass. Meanwhile, both their competitors got it right from the start on their consoles, which sell like water on the desert, and could focus on games from the go.

@blueinheaven: not sure what you mean. Xbox has lots of games. just because it has a few less exclusives doesn't mean it has any games. most multi platform games look better on the X and they have killer exclusives that ps4 doesnt have. I also have a ps4. just buy both and there is no problem.

@shawnster7280: Every Xbox game is on PC and looks and plays better on that platform. Most Xbox One owners don't have an X, the vast majority are still playing on truly awful hardware.

An X for multiplats and a PS4 (or Pro) for exclusives is not a bad way to go but most Xbox gamers just won't take that leap with next gen not too far away now.

I hope they turn it round. I love Gears and loved Halo before 5 and the 360 was excellent but a lot of things need to change. Spencer needs to go for a start. Worst head of games probably in the entire history of games.

@blueinheaven: I have to disagree with the "Spencer needs to go..." He was the one to turn Xbox around form the pit it was in. You know of someone better? The innovations that they are bringing is making it better for ALL gamers. The acquisition of thoses studios were all Phil Spencer's Idea. New exclusives games are coming thanks to him and you think he did a bad job? REALLY. I and many others are glad to see him bring Xbox from the pit of despair.

BTW. Everyone doesn't want to play their games on a PC. PC games are still on the Microsoft platform. However for those that do ..enjoy.

Yeah he decides to sign some low key devs when the generation is nearly over after years of absolutely nothing at all yes in my mind he did an absolutely terrible job the Xbox One is a wasteland. I honestly fail to see how he could have been worse.

This is the man who told Gamespot in an interview he couldn't see why gamers needed to play at 60fps the man is completely clueless and the release of the Xbox One X with an excellent GPU and a hilariously shit CPU completely bottlenecking the framerate is yet another stunning part of his legacy of having literally no idea at all what he is doing.

Releasing really old games as BC is not what people had in mind when they spent a lot of money on an Xbox One at the start of this generation and it absolutely is not what people expected from the X but that's what they've got.

@blueinheaven: I understand where your coming from, but your claim is predicated in some assumptions that are very shaky.

For one, you’re assuming Phil spencer could have bought the studios immediately after taking control. We have no way of knowing what the projected cost was of saving Xbox as a brand after the Don Mattrick fiasco, or the amount of work it was going to take. We also don’t know what first party exclusives were in the pipeline that were delayed or cancelled. If there were some, that could explain the delay.

To say Spencer could have immediately gotten the funds necessary to buy multiple studios after his promotion is also far fetched. That’s not how large corporations or mergers and acquisitions work. They take time, feasibility studies, and strategies in order to make a case to spend tens of millions of dollars. No company will spend that money because “This guy said so”. Shareholders would skewer that poor bast*rd.

You’re also forgetting that Microsoft did have scalebound as an exclusive but it was cancelled. One exclusive isn’t a lot, but it does indicate effort.

All in all, I understand why your pissed, but I think your frustration is aimed at the wrong person.

Interested to see what they are working on. Their new developers have had about a year(or more depending on behind closed door information) to come up with some idea's for their exclusive games. I'm sure we'll see something from a few of the studios. We'll probably finally get some more information about the mysterious other game Playground Games is working on.

I know because of Crackdown 3 and Sea Of Thieves, they are trying to debut game much closer to their completion, but I do feel we'll see some early stage stuff from their new studios as a show of good faith.

Exclusives have always been their weakest point. About time they started doing something about it. The few they have are good but, they need to come out with new franchises and do so more frequently and stop abandoning games, still annoyed about Scalebound. And they need to give their devs enough time to make a game solid at launch, looking at you, Sea of Thieves. They have a lot of cool tech but most of it is used for Productivity, not games. Maybe they're developing a handheld? LOL. I'm excited to see what Sony and MS have on the table for next gen. Hopefully MS learned a LOT from the X1 launch disaster.

@bdrtfm: I'll never understand why people were so upset about the cancellation of Scalebound.

I get that it was a new IP from a respected dev but personally, I lost all interest when they last showed gameplay before the cancellation. It looked pretty bad to me, but just my opinion.

@aross2004: I thought the concept was solid. The execution, not so much. It had potential. It just needed the right people working on it. It's not often a game is beyond fixing but someone decided it was. I'm actually looking forward to Minecraft Dungeons. A dungeon crawler in the Minecraft style looks fun
