Xbox update process "unacceptable" for F2P games, says World of Tanks dev

Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi says company working with Microsoft to streamline update and QA processes on Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360's update and certification processes are "unacceptable" for free-to-play games, World of Tanks developer Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi told Polygon in a new interview.

No Caption Provided

The executive explained that Wargaming is working with Microsoft to streamline its certification and update processes ahead of World of Tanks' launch on the Xbox 360 this summer.

"The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates," Kislyi said. "But one of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process takes an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates."

World of Tanks will be a free-to-play title on Xbox Live, though it won't be entirely free-to-play, as players must have a Gold subscription ($5/month) to play the game. Kislyi said last month that the company must "tolerate" this requirement, which he is "not happy about."

As a beta tester for this platform, I will say that WG has thourougly dug themselves a hole with Microsft. Having not produced a quality patch since 9-9 and 21 days later still making promises to have a patch "soon", the game is not playable "as intended". Frustrating beta's to venture off to do other things. I do not belive in the FtP model as the internet band with required to play any FtP is not free. Free is a misnomer we have accepted as a game community and therefore so should WG's Victor Kislyi CEO. I receive so many benifits of my Live Gold account that it is worth my monies.

Back in my crappy xbox days I remember that the updates on xbox take seconds even with an average internet so why is the wargame dev moaning? it's not as if the pc version's not flawed like f**k.

The pc version has so many problems, main one being balancing and biassed towards Russian stuff like you wouldn't believe, it needs one heck of an overhaul basically.

And @Techn1c4l I've been playing World of Tanks for a while on and off(gets boring very quickly) and it's more pay to win than anything. The money system in the game for basic things like having a camo pattern on a tank is dull and rip off, it's like microsoft points.

@Johny_47 @Techn1c4l okay 1st, close your eyes, then 2nd, reopen your eyes. 3rd, reread the article above. At no point does anyone complain about actual DOWNLOAD SPEEDS, the executive up top is saying that the time it takes to CERTIFY an update can be extremely long (and until two months ago on 360 only 2 free updates were allowed to a title, any more and a $20k fee was also tacked on, making indy development either A) a huge PITA to develop for B) only update the game twice and say heyyyy sorry, MS only allows us two and being an indy dev we cant afford to just throw around 20k freely).

So yes the updates are fine and fast, its the CERTIFICATTTTIONNNNN process that is old and slow compared to a quickly rolled out PC update within a few days of finding a gamebreaking glitch or cheat or flaw.

I couldn't care less about World of Whatever, but it's great to see a company speaking against the draconian policies that prevail in the console market.

Oh, so it's free-to-play...but it isn't. If it isn't ENTIRELY free to play then why are they still considering it free-to-play? They might as well just come out and say "You can play the game free of charge for only 5 bucks a month". It doesn't make sense.

This game might be free-to-download. But free-to-play? No, so they shouldn't be calling it free-to-play then.

@ClintCommander The difference is your not paying $5 a month to play world of tanks your paying 5$ a month for gold to play ALL games on XBL. there's nothing wrong with needing gold to play the game for free considering it feels like their rewarding people with gold some new games for free as well as some free to play games, Sony would do the exact same thing in MS position the difference is Sony isn't in this position and there in the shit with loss after loss.

@jayjay444 5 dollars to play a free game. Wow! You're right! That's so rewarding! Man, it's too bad those PC players don't get this reward as well. They're stuck with playing their free-to-play games for free. Those suckers!

Oh, and Sony will be having free-to-play games as well. Ever hear of PlanetSide2? They've already announced there will be no pay wall to play the game. It's actually FREE-TO-PLAY!

Look, I own and love all the systems. Really I do. But if there are aspects about them that I don't agree with then I'm going to call them out on it.

@ClintCommander @jayjay444 Are u 5 lmao, and what the **** u on about, Planetside 2 isn't even an exclusive and either is world of tanks, if i want to play a pay 2 win pile of shit I would buy Planetside 2 on my PC and same goes for world of tanks, and it still doesn't change the fact u pay $5 a month to play ALL 360 GAMES and XBL on the 360 will still be miles ahead of the PS4's PSN lmao, Sony will never catch up when it comes to online gaming, just accept the facts kid.

"The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates,"

That's the thing, you can't do that with a real business.

I agree that the update timeframe is asinine, but they can't afford to allow a bug or anything of the sort into their marketplace.

He would have known in advance how their QA process works, yet he still decided to release the game on the 360?

A QA process is there for a reason, this ensures quality for customers on day 1. Nothing is worse than downloading a game and not being able to play it on day 1. Even with this "unacceptable" certification process, there are still buggy games released, so if anything they need to tighten it up(which they didn't of course, now updates are free if I remember correctly, we'll see how that turns out).

ITS THE DEVELOPERS CHOICE ITS NOT SONY FORCING YOU.

How stupid are you? Devs don't want their f2p games behind a paywall, that defeats the purpose of FREE TO PLAY.

World of Tanks will be a free-to-play title on Xbox Live, though it won't be entirely free-to-play, as players must have a Gold subscription ($5/month) to play the game. Kislyi said last month that the company must "tolerate" this requirement, which he is "not happy about."

Read the Update : Dumb @ss

Update: Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, told Polygon that the PlayStation Plus subscription requirement is up to publishers for free-to-play PS4 games. "As far as free-to-play games are concerned, it's a publisher's decision whether they put it inside or outside of the PlayStation Plus requirements," he said.

They only listed 4 FTP that di not need PSN+.

@Cl0ud we complain about Live because there is something we don't like about it.

- You have to pay to gain access to services like Youtube, netflix etc.
- it's a payed service, yet you see ads on the dashboard
- Free-to-play need xbl gold

@blackace @Meta-Gnostic That's funny considering the only problem I've ever had online with PS3 was when it got hacked. Other than that it has been identical to 360, without costing money. And yes XBL has been down many times for short durations.

In any case PS4 will be even better for online since they're charging for it, and this game would've been even better on PS4 than PS3. So for this game, regarding developer policies:

PS4>PS3>360>X1

@jayjay444 My downloads are at least as fast on PSN, if not faster.

The only time I've been disconnected much is on EA games, which require you to log in to EA, but that has happened on 360 the same amount. I've had 360 games freeze more.

Not sure what you mean by slow updates. Updates come when needed and install quickly, but now with PS+ I never ever have to deal with any updates - not even game updates.

I could care less about cross game chat, that's something I would never use anyways.

Did not lose my credit card because I wasn't stupid enough to put it on any game service.

So none of your points are valid and your credit card problems are your own fault.

@Meta-Gnostic @jayjay444 Slow downloads, constant disconnects, very slow updates, no cross game chat, and there's loads more but i could be here all day, and that's all before PSN got hacked and lost my credit card details, and i'm still pissed at that, also i would just liek to add it's not my internet speed, my connection speed is 120MB.

@Meta-Gnostic @blackace Umm, I'm pretty sure "getting hacked" is the worst possible thing that can happen in the online universe. I definitely wouldn't be including it in the same sentence where I'm trying to positively compare online products. When I'm looking at the list of "check boxes" that show what each experience offers, only 1 gets to put a check in the, "your data is secure" box. If that is a check-box on the comparison list, It's the only box I care about.

I'll ask this then, if it is unacceptable, then why the hell did you make a 360 (Xbox version in general) version of the game?

"It's unacceptable, but we'll bend over and take it."
