Xbox's New Studios Will Be Focused On Making Exclusive Games

"We have no plans to further expand our exclusive first-party games to other consoles."

Microsoft says its new studios will "focus on making games for our platforms," with no further plans to release more Xbox exclusives on PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch.

The company has recently acquired a number of studios that either have or will release games on Nintendo Switch and PS4, including Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Obsidian. However, it looks unlikely that this partnership will continue with Xbox's future releases.

Now Playing: More Xbox One Exclusives Are On The Way - GS News Update

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft outlined its plans for upcoming first-party titles, saying, "The past year has been an exciting time for us as we have more than doubled the internal creative teams making up Xbox Game Studios. As these new studios transitioned in, we were aware of some existing commitments to other platforms and will honor them. However, going forward these new studios will focus on making games for our platforms. We have no plans to further expand our exclusive first-party games to other consoles."

This follows an announcement, via Nintendo, that previous Xbox One and PC exclusive Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition, will be coming to Nintendo Switch with Microsoft handling the publishing duties.

Nintendo and Microsoft have been collaborating on multiple projects over the past 12 months. Banjo-Kazooie was revealed as a DLC character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate back at E3 2019, and Microsoft also helped support the Switch releases for both Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and Cuphead. The company has plans to bring Xbox Live to Nintendo's machine in the future as well.

Meanwhile, games like Fortnite: Battle Royale, Rocket League, and Minecraft continue to support crossplay across multiple platforms, and Microsoft has no desire to halt these plans for current or upcoming titles. "We continue to believe deeply in crossplay and progression of games with the right flexibility for developers to ensure a fair and fun experience," the statement reads.

Microsoft also has plans to make its IP accessible via other devices by using the company's streaming service xCloud.

Speaking an Xbox One gamer (who plans to purchase the next Xbox iteration due to it's promised "full library and peripheral backwards compatibility") this is actually extremely disappointing to me. The concept of console exclusive titles as the major selling point is antiquated and backwards, and I'd thought Microsoft was moving past this nonsense. I prefer to see great titles on my Xbox One playable on other consoles and on PC. It's not enjoyable to play a good game and recommend it to a friend, only to find out that they don't have access to it because they don't own the same console.

Being confident in the value proposition of a console, it's specs and functionality, it's network, the services like Game Pass and Gold, and its media player functions, should mean you don't need to rely on a group of "only here" games. A solid console will get third party support, and gamers and developers alike will know they can rely on it to be supported for a sufficient amount of time to justify their investment in the hardware.

I'm glad that a number of Xbox "console exclusive" titles are also available on the PC as well, so those titles can reach a wider audience. Seeing Ori and Cuphead ported to the Switch was great news. Reversing this positive trend, and moving backwards with this regressive thinking, is highly unsettling. It doesn't make me look forward to the next Xbox iteration more, but rather, makes me doubt their confidence in the hardware, if they feel they need a number of "exclusive" titles to add incentive to the purchase.

If you have faith in your machine and your services, you don't need the crutch of exclusives to justify it's existence.

@izraal: I see where you are coming from but the fact is Microsoft need exclusives as there rivals have plenty. I'm all for 3rd party games being cross play but if Microsoft where to put all there first party games multiplat then why would I buy one when I could just get a ps5 and have all of Microsofts games too it makes zero sense in the real world(I'm an x owner BTW not some Sony fanboi lol).

@walbo:

I do appreciate your viewpoint. For me, it's functionality and overall value that's key over title exclusivity. I had both a PS3 and an Xbox 360 in the prior console generation (as well as the Nintendo consoles, but they've positioned themselves on the "Z axis" to any competition, and that's a much more complicated discussion). This generation I've entirely passed on PS4 simply because it doesn't hold enough value to warrant the purchase for me, despite it having several "exclusive titles."

I generally wait until new consoles have been out a few years before adopting one, which allows time for a library of games to develop, initial bugs to work out, and often in a redesign and/or price drop. When comparing the two systems, the Xbox One S and X were competing against the PS4 Slim and Pro. At the time the S was cheaper than the Slim, offered support for 4k Blu Ray discs, and backwards compatibility with a large - and importantly, growing - number of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. The PS4 models did not support 4k Blu Ray, and offered *no* backwards compatibility for any existing PS1, PS2, or PS3 games. They had a growing library of previous generation games *for sale*, but no option to play them using the existing discs.

The Xbox Models were either cheaper with more appealing features (S vs Slim) or cheaper/similar prices for much better specs and more appealing features (X vs Pro) - in all cases the Xbox One models simply offered more than the PS4 models. Not having to purchase a separate 4k Blu Ray Player, and having backwards compatibility with hundreds of prior generation games, is worth far more to me than exclusivity of the 3-5 current generation games on the PS4 that I have interest in playing, a list which at this point consists of Spider-Man, and the new Uncharted, Infamous, God of War and Star Ocean games. Persona 5 would have been on that list, but it was also released on the PS3, and I purchased and played that version instead. Purchasing a PS4 simply does not make sense to me as a value proposition, despite it having a better reputation for "exclusive games."

The exclusive titles are barely a consideration, from my perspective, as there are at least as many exclusive Xbox One titles I've enjoyed and it ends up a wash. Exclusivity is an arms race that is to the consumers detriment, where competition over inherent value is to the consumer's benefit.

Based on the announcement regarding the next generation Xbox, this will be among the first consoles I'm intending to purchase at launch. They have announced it will be fully compatible with the entire library of original Xbox, Xbox 360 that the Xbox One currently supports (and based on track record we can assume the backwards compatible original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles will continue to grow), all Xbox One titles , as well as all Xbox One peripherals, i.e. current gen controllers, while retaining the 4k Blu Ray support, and obviously next gen titles.

This is huge, a previously unheard of level of value - 3 prior generations of backwards compatibility (not complete to all titles for original Xbox and the 360, but decidedly heading there), optimal physical media playback (4k Blu Rays), prior gen peripheral backwards compatibility (Xbox One controllers), and next gen gaming. This is the first time an upcoming console has sufficiently "sold me" to buy one at or near launch, and it's based on the overall value, rather than *any* exclusive titles whatsoever.

The Switch, despite having no backwards compatibility at all and limited media player options, was another such "near launch" purchase, because it provided a value proposition of a different kind - a reasonably powerful home console that doubles as a portable console. Another example of Nintendo competing on the "Z axis." The Switch is the one you can grab on the go, take on vacations and dock into a hotel's TV, etc. It's an entirely different approach to value, but still a valid one.

If Playstation 5 announced full backwards compatibility with every PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 game, as well as 4k Blu Ray support, then we have a challenger. At present, as they've only announced single generation backwards compatibility (PS4 only, based on what I've read), it's simply not competitive. Still, it's not too late for them to change my mind, but "exclusive titles" won't do it. Features and overall value proposition might.

Makes sense. They are trying to make a little extra money off their Xbox One line-up to make up for losses as much as possible.

I think releasing Ori and Cuphead are advertising tactics to bring Switch players to Xcloud, Xbox One, and Windows 10. If I had to guess Microsoft will buy Moon Studios as soon as they reorganize and stop working from home, maybe by XO19 or TGA. I think Microsoft is definitely courting MDHR. Their next game is without a doubt an Xbox exclusive. I'm sure we will see Xcloud on Switch someday, but that's the same amount of commitment as buying a console. $120 a year is actually more profitable for Microsoft than buying a console, so WHEN Xcloud comes to Switch don't think your "sticking it" to Microsoft. The people who thought games outside of Wasteland, Psychonauts, and The Outer Worlds were coming to PS4 clearly didn't do their research. TOW 2? Definitely an Xbox exclusive. The next Double Fine game same deal. But it's super honorable to allow games like Wasteland, Bards Tale, Psychonauts, etc to fulfill commitments. I definitely want those studios to have freedom but I hope InExile does something more ambitious than a CRPG and if there is gonna be a Psychonauts 3... it NEEDS to be able to compete with big dogs like Mario Odyssey and Astrobot VR. Granted I haven't played the second one so.

Hey since you disabled comments on your PS4 sale article - those sales suck. And you should be ashamed of yourself for muting the community.

@Utnayan: There are over 500 games on sale right now, and they change them almost weekly. How is that bad?

It may have taken a while but I think Microsoft is finally getting the hint.

Having AAA exclusive titles goes a long way in differentiating yourself from the competition and gives a reason for gamers to adopt your hardware or stay with it in the long run.

Let’s hope this decision pays off for gamers and is an indication of good things to come.

@nsa_protocol44: I do hope that they have the next Fable in the works. Playground games is rumored to be making it with their second studio and by the Horizon games, they are very good at making interesting open worlds with cars at least, so we'll see what they can do.

@thelostscribe: I'm convinced there will be another Fable. It's too big a franchise with too much potential for Microsoft to let lie. In the meantime Greedfall has some resonance in combat, customisation, choosing sides and exploration that with Fable to tide me over until then.

Smart move, this has me excited again for the next Xbox again, can't wait to see what these new studios have in development. I wonder if Sony acquiring Insomiac made Phil change his mind about putting first party games on other systems.
