XCOM 2 Dev "Not Opposed" to Xbox One, PS4 Versions

The current focus on PC means better keyboard-and-mouse controls and more on-screen information.

When XCOM 2 launches later this year, it will--unlike its predecessor--be available exclusively on PC. Developer Firaxis hasn't shot down the possibility of it coming to Xbox One or PS4 in the future, and it's now explained the rationale behind forgoing a simultaneous launch on consoles.

"When we looked at what we wanted to do with the sequel, we had all these very, very ambitious goals," creative director Jake Solomon told IGN. This includes things like improved destruction and procedurally generated levels, which would require the relatively small team at Firaxis "to use all of our studio expertise … and our expertise here is PC. That's our home, and that's where we're really comfortable."

"When we have our meetings, when we talk about stuff, we only talk about PC," Solomon explained. "We talk about 'What is the experience like on PC? What does the mouse feel like in this experience?'"

Focusing exclusively on PC right out of the gate means XCOM 2 will be better tailored to a keyboard-and-mouse control scheme and interface. (Controller support is planned for post-launch.) And knowing that players are likely to be sitting closer to their screen than they would be on consoles, Firaxis is free to provide more information. This is said to include things like the reasoning for your hit-chance going up or down.

If you're still clinging to the hope that you'll be able to play XCOM 2 on Xbox One or PS4, it sounds like it's possible, but you'll be waiting longer than PC gamers. "We're certainly not opposed to that," Solomon said, "but I can assure that's something we're not even discussing yet."

XCOM 2 is set for release on PC in November. For more, check out our story about its announcement.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is one of my favorite games and I've played it on PS3, tablet and PC (in that order) and the controls on the PS3 version was the best of them. It was less clunky to change perspective and height and I made less positioning errors than I did on PC. However, navigating the base is much easier on PC. Tablet version is only recommendable if you are on the go and have no other option.

So glad this is coming to PC first so we can hopefully get mods working and of course we get better graphics. If they want to water down the game so it can run on a console later go for it. Wish more developers would do this.

PC Exclusive you say..... MMMMMM FEELS SO GOOD! just don't screw up mods this time with a patch that killed the file Format Firaxis because some of the player generated mods were AMAZING.

All good news in my opinion. Controller support makes sense as XCOM EU/EW handled them pretty well. Glad they aren't dumbing down the release so they can port it to consoles fast though. Better to release it all-out on the PC, grow the mod community, and squash the bugs first; THEN go to work stripping it and dumbing it down for the little consoles and tablets to play with.

Thank god they are abandoning consoles..... we can get a much richer game with Mod support and than if they want to add console support later for bonus cash they can.... Why would anyone want to play with a console anyway?

Looks dumb. I won't be sad if I can't play a game with snake people in it. & I don't care if a game looks so good I pee myself, not touching a mouse & keyboard. Maybe if I get 1 of those Steam Box thingy's & it has good controller support I'll take another look.

All the developers are saying is that they don't have the resources to work on three different versions all optimised for their different hardware all at the same time. Because they primarily develop games for PC then obviously the PC version is coming out first, Sales of the PC version are going to finance development of the console versions later. Why are people struggling with this?

AS long as the pc version is up to scratch then i have no worries about the console version. Though i have to say I played the first one on console and it was actually pretty decent control wise. Same with Diablo, so I'm not to hesitant about their being a console version, especially when it comes out after the pc version and is specifically designed for the console.

IF Firaxis claimed to be a small studio and only have limited resources to work ONLY on one platform, then why did they release it on all previous Gen consoles? They even extended (Enemy Within) a separate DLC disc later.

IF they can't handle the heat, why not consign the project to other studios with deeper pockets ? How are they going to climb the corporate ladder by playing safe? How are they going to earn the respect of the gaming industry?

I don't mean to be a douce_bag but this game is regarded as one my all time favorite since its original release on PC running on a VGA card! The PC I have at home can't run on next Gen graphics and I frankly admit the grape is sour. I really want to play it ! What a bunch of cowards and traitors.....LOL

@layhoma2004: Sooner or later you're going to have to upgrade your computer. And when you do, the game will still be there. You don't have to play it the day it comes out.

To be fair, it's not the only game of this type (meaning strategy) that's gone PC only, or first. There's tons of strategy games on PC that will never be seen anywhere near a console. Any pure console gamer that likes these sort of games would wet themselves if they saw the vast array of similar games on PC.

A lot of devs just make for PC though, and we don't hear about the 'not making for console' argument because it's never considered. If only the devs of big budget console games like Last Of Us would consider making for PC too.

It absolutely should be on consoles, no question about it. The more people playing XCOM the better, put it on PC first certainly and then maybe to a simplified version for the consoles.

In fact if it wasn't for me buying XCOM Enemy Within on Xbox 360, then I would never have went ahead and bought XCOM Enemy Within through Steam.

I simply loved this game but after a wee while you knew what to expect, there were little in the way of surprises after the halfway point.

I certainly hope it comes to consoles. The first game and the expansion were great, and played great with a controller.

This is the ideal; develop and release for PC, then dumb-down (if needed) for consoles at a later date.

The reality, sadly, is that it is easier to never "smart-up" your game in the first place, and thus simply develop for the lowest common denominator (in this case, console platform) first.

Nice to see Firaxis going the PC route first. I enjoyed the last XCOM game, but did find it a bit simple.

With any game involving copious amount of strategy and tactics, that's how it should be. They can dumb down the controls and gameplay for consoles to fit the limited controllers layout later if they want.

@ExoticCharm: Sales, you're right.

But gameplay is so much better on PC. Hell, even the mods alone make it superior. But then you add in better visuals, first-person mode, better controls, etc

I wouldn't call consoles inferior, though, just simple and limiting.

Good news. This means it won't have shitty controls like so many console ports have. It hopefully also means it will be a strategical game since they doesn't have to be dumbed down for the console kiddies like so many games (like Dragon Age Origins) before.

It's funny how even only 6-7 years ago so many people declared the pc to be dead for gaming and now it's back in full swing, kicking the consoles in the dirt.

@ExoticCharm: Actually it's otherwise. Console sales of XCOM were extremely poor, this is why Firaxis dropped consoles whatsoever. Home of strategy/tactical games is on PC.

As a PC gamer I love this, but I am suprised. I'd love to see the sales breakdown for XCOM. I assume it sold much better on PC, for them to make this decision.

Yay for no port...

I aint mad at them for making the game on PC first, it's a smart move.I will never build a PC as i think it's a waste and a hassle i don't need and refer to play games on my bed or sofa, but they are a PC team so let them make the best PC game possible and then when ready, they can make the best console game possible.Like he said , they are a small team so why try an over do it and make a broken console game?We have enough of those.
