You Can Now Play The Canceled Dreamcast Castlevania Demo

Castlevania Resurrection was canned back in 2000, but you can now play its Dreamcast pre-E3 demo if you're so inclined.

13 Comments

A canceled 3D Castlevania game for the Sega Dreamcast is now widely playable for the first time, albeit in prototype form. Earlier in April, footage of a demo of the canned game appeared on YouTube, which caused Castlevania fans to lobby its anonymous owner to release the demo for the world to experience.

Now, thanks to that collector and the French Dreamcast fansite Sega Dreamcast Info, you can now download the prototype and play it for yourself. According to the site, it includes several levels as well as a battle against the boss Medusa. Since it's an unfinished prototype for a canceled game, you can definitely expect some frame rate drops and other technical issues. The download link on Sega Dreamcast Info includes instructions for how to play it on an emulator or burn it to a disc to play it on your actual Dreamcast.

Now Playing: The History Of Castlevania - Over 30 Years Of Dracula

As we stated in the previous article, Castlevania Resurrection was set to be a 3D entry in the series, and bears certain similarities to other such Castlevania games, particularly Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. Generally speaking, 3D Castlevania games are among the least popular games in the franchise, though some have their defenders, particularly Lament of Innocence and the Lords of Shadow sub-series.

Intended as a sequel to the Game Boy entry Castlevania Legends, Resurrection would've continued the story of Sonia Belmont. Based on interviews with staff members who worked on the game, it appears that Resurrection was a project beset by problems. Artist Jason Lee Elliott said the game was "doomed from the start" due to the inexperience of the American Konami team, which had primarily worked on the baseball game Bottom of the Ninth.

Art director Greg Orduyan said that Konami Japan was never going to trust the American team with a high-profile Castlevania game, and blamed the demise of the Dreamcast as a contributing factor. The Castlevania game franchise has been on hold since 2014's Lords of Shadow 2, but the Netflix show is still scheduled for a fourth season that will release some point in the future.

*car pulls up to secluded cabin in wilderness; Dreamcast walks out the door; leans on porch rail*

Me: *exiting car* "Hey buddy. How you been?"

DC: "You know I'm retired, you're wasting your time here."

Me: "Got a new game..."

DC: *while lighting cigarette* "Ha...you've finally lost it"

Me: *pulls out DVD-R with 'Castlevania' scribbled in ink across the front*

DC: *drags on cig* "[long exhale] ah what the hell...I've been wanting to put a few rounds through the VMU"

If they are not going to release any new castlevania games, I think Konami should at least cash in & release a metroidvania compilation of the GBA & DS titles. I played them all but I think fans would eat this up.

@kintoneo:

You're absolutely right. I've been rooting for that compilation for years. They're amazing games - I still own them all and replay them regularly - but it would be great to have them on the big screen.

It's such a no-brainer, the fact they haven't already done it makes me wonder whether Nintendo placed some ironclad 20-something-year exclusivity agreement on them...

There have been quite a few first-time re-releases of SNES games on modern consoles in the last few years - the Mega Man X collections, Super Castlevania IV, Super Turrican 1+2, etc. The shortest time-frame I can see was Super Star Wars which was re-released on the PS4 in 2015, 23 years after it debuted on the SNES in 1992.

It just doesn't seem very likely that multiple companies all decided to sit on their SNES back-catalog titles until now. It seems more likely that exclusivity agreements are expiring.

If that's the kind of time-frame we're looking at for the GBA and DS Castlevanias, then we probably won't be seeing that compilation until around 2031 when Order of Ecclesia is freed-up... (2008+23=2031)

Anyway, just guessing.

@ghostgate2001:

Mega Man X Collection was released for the PS2 in '06. It included X1-X6 (though it did use the Playstation version of X3). I have no proof, but I really don't think those kinds of agreements exist for SNES games.

I think we see more of these now because they are easier/cheaper to produce as digital releases.

Castlevania needs a new game desperately.

I think if they make a Souls-Like game set in that world it would work perfectly for it.

@dragonsama:

Yep, I'd love a new Castlevania game - but imho Konami just needs to sell (or lease or license) the Castlevania IP to Koji Igarashi. They're not doing anything with it and the creative talent that once resided at Konami left long ago.
