"You Want That Content So Bad," Former PlayStation Boss Says Of Switch 2 Exclusive Titles

"That first-party exclusivity kind of mitigates the sticker shock."

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the Switch 2 since its official announcement has been focused on the price of the console and its games--some believe the prices are simply too much.

In an interview with PlayerDriven, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden said Nintendo can charge what it wants for new first-party Switch 2 games because Nintendo makes compelling games. Some people might perceive the price increase for a game like Mario Kart World ($80) as being "hefty," Layden said, but in the end, people will buy it anyway.

"If it's the only place where you can play Mario, then you get your wallet out and you buy into it... and Donkey Kong and Zelda. That first-party exclusivity kind of mitigates the sticker shock, if you will, of these price hikes, because you want that content so bad," he said (via IGN).

Layden, who worked at Sony for decades on the PlayStation team before leaving in 2019, went on to say that video game prices have actually gone down, generally, over the years.

"In 2025 dollars, $59.99 in 1999 is equivalent to $100. Your purchasing power compared to your cost of living, it's much smaller now than it was before, but still companies have been reluctant to push that price up," he said, adding that he thinks publishers should have charged $5 more for new games each new console generation.

Meanwhile, actor and video game developer Abubakar Salim told Insider Gaming that inclusivity is an important consideration to remember in a conversation about general socioeconomic issues. Salim questioned why Nintendo is charging more for the Switch 2 console and games.

"We're in a very tough time at the moment, so why make it harder and have that bar eventually so high? Yeah, I was a bit upset about the price changes, because Nintendo is a family game, Nintendo is a family genre. It's a family platform," Salim said.

For Mario Kart World, Nintendo defended the $80 price point by saying the game is a worthy upgrade over Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and people will understand this after the April 17 Nintendo Direct. Meanwhile, others have said Nintendo chose to price Mario Kart World at $80 simply because it can.

At $450, the Switch 2 is about $50 more than the original Switch with inflation factored in. Nintendo management says the price hike is justified because the Switch 2 is a better, more robust console. Experts believe Nintendo will lose money on every Switch 2 it sells, which is common for console hardware.

By former do you mean the guy who was fired for taking the stance. Because of how poorly it went. Sure Nintendo has a dedicated fan base who is going to love this and pay whatever they charge. No hate to them. However no I have someone who has not bought one of their systems since the switch and 3DS I'm sad I won't get to play them but this deal is not worth it and I will not be buying again. On the switch with the choices the Pokemon franchise to made I canceled my order and with what they're doing now they've likely lost me for a long time. I would have liked to play the new animal Crossing but I'm not buying a switch for one game. There are two few exclusives to make the price of the console worth it this is true in the case PlayStation Xbox and Nintendo at this time. Xbox is the only one who gives me another option to play those games so they get my money for those games

TBH "people will buy it anyway" is an ignorant mentality that ensures businesses fail. It's extra funny when a Sony guy said so for I know they hoped Concord would sell well because of this BS mentality and then look what happened lol. Some people will buy it, sure but it doesn't mean you can profit just like what happened with Concord (Never forget Battle of the Somme and Concord bruh lol). Nintendo video games mostly target little kids and therefore parents wouldn't wanna pay that much money when banana is cheaper. :DDD. They should realize adults are on the verge of making forcing their children work legal thanks to BS economy to return the golden age of Victorian era when adults enjoyed early retirement when kids started to work at age 4 and they keep increasing prices of everything wow like parents are okay to buy every expensive BS to their dear kids. :DDDDDDDD Or don't tell me Nintendo expect little kids to have the economical power to afford Switch 2 and their video games? :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

If you want a Mario game IDK dude play the previous billions of Mario game that you can play way cheaper. Anyone who does business should get when the item is luxury people easily can give up on it when there are tons of alternatives as they are cheaper. What will stop people from keep playing Fortnight for free when Mario is $80? Nothing. Yes you can wait for discount to buy the game when you are ok to buy it but the thing is it became political and social standing issue now. Despite people can easily afford it making it unreasonably high price will make people intentionally not buy it even if it drops to $1 just to make a statement. Times changes, people are more rebellious anymore thanks to social media. So who would buy your video games when doing so means you are a sucker and other stuff that I can't write here just like how people make fun of people on social media for buying Ubishit games anymore. People having new generation trauma for whatever they do make them lose 1 million followers in one day. :DDD

Same logic may be applied to the Switch 2 itself. Why buy it when a PC does way more and about in the same price range? Some people say "I like the idea that once buying Switch 2 will allow me to play games without upgrading the system for a decade unlike how PC is" but this is an ignorant idea for not all video games release on PC will be accessable on Switch 2, you don't have to upgrade PC all the time as the game you played on high now will run ok with low settings a decade later as it will be no different than reducing yourself to video game console lack of quality lol. And then they say "but PC games are problematic as it's easier to develop bug-free video game console games" but then my dude new generation developers are so lazy, greedy and useless they even release bug fest video games on video game consoles. On PC users can find a way to make the bugs don't happen and fix issues and all but on video game consoles you better wait for an update that may never come.

TBH only Nintendo is primitive enough to support console exclusive BS these days and it doesn't worth to buy a Nintendo console just because of their games since Wii U. All they do is developing video games that has pretty much the same gameplay since video games of 80s with little modern touch they add by stealing from modern video games as the graphics are like made with Microsoft Paint and they ask $80 like a joke. Nintendo just Nintendon't develop decent video games because they don't care — Simple as that. For that price tag I would expect a video game that's combination of GTA SA, Fallout New Vegas, Metal Gear Rising, Persona 5, No Man's Sky, Rogue Galaxy, Radiata Stories, Radiant Historia and Freedom Wars in one that has real life graphics, not some fat dude plumber who has a PhD jumping around lol. :DDD

@guitarwarrior66: ok, that was a lot and mostly unnecessary, but your choice.

I’m thinking there’s more of a ”meta” narrative here, and while it was only a former PlayStation boss making this comment, think about it. His statement would obviously rub people wrong. Did you think he was oblivious to that? Maybe, but I‘ll argue that he DID know how that would come across, and it’s a clever business tactic in itself because it‘s a win-win.

You make that statement and it potentially negatively affects your competitor’s revenue as some customers resist purchasing in a sort of rebellious way. Or, you’re proven exactly right and it allows you as an alternative console manufacturer to also raise your prices because you could say, “Well, Nintendo raised theirs and look how well it worked for sales?”

Wages haven't kept inline with the rise of inflation. The cost of living going up has basically meant the vast majority don't have the disposable income like they did in the past. In situations like that people become a lot more selective on what they'll choose to spend their money on for enjoyment.

You're looking at $600 package for the Switch 2 on release for all the bells and whistles. For a console that hardware wise isn't even competitive to the current Xbox/PS5, that's already a bit of a stretch. A lot of the pricing I've seen suggested for the Switch 2 says to me that Nintendo are really not trying to be consumer friendly. You just need to look at the price difference of the console in JP vs rest of the world.

Just like with new games, if it's not something that I feel I absolutely MUST have day 1. I'm happy to wait and pick it up when it finally becomes cheap enough. I got a good gaming PC and a large backlog that I keep adding to every steam sale ;)

Sorry, but Switch is quite the contrary to being a family platform. A handheld device which you can take anywhere is far from family device. If that's the case with Switch, then everything could be considered a family thing.

Other than nostalgia I don't get the appeal of Nintendo games unless you're a kid. So the bloated cost definitely matters to people like me who might have just barely bought a Switch 2 if the price was right. But truth is Nintendo will make enough money with it's "buy anything" fans anyway. Selling to anyone else isn't necessary to them. So godspeed I guess 👌🏻

"In 2025 dollars, $59.99 in 1999 is equivalent to $100".... WHAT THE F@#$ ARE YOU SMOKING?! I clearly need some. I could barely afford a $60 game back then, I'm lucky if I can afford it when it's on sale now.

Piracy makes that argument invalid. People will steal the content if they deem that it's too expensive. This always happens.
