Your Destiny Character's Levels And Items Won't Transfer To Destiny 2

You'll be leaving most everything behind.

The promised reveal of the next content update for Destiny has proven to be more meaningful than expected. Bungie today discussed the "final live event for the Destiny 1 era" and provided details about how Destiny players will transition from the first game to its upcoming sequel.

By and large, it sounds as if your Destiny character won't transfer to Destiny 2 (or whatever it ends up being called).

Now Playing: GS News Update: Destiny 2 Characters Won't Transfer Levels And Items

"Sequels represent the start of a new adventure for every player, with new worlds to explore, new stories to tell, new powers to acquire, new loot to earn, and much more," Bungie said on its website today. "This led us to a decision that would enable us to serve both the game and the player's best interests: Destiny 1 power, possessions, and Eververse-related items and currency will not carry forward. They will, however, remain accessible to you in Destiny 1."

The good news is that your character--at least in terms of the way he or she looks-- won't be abandoned for the sequel.

"We know that, just like us, you have grown fond of the Guardians you've created, so we do plan to preserve your character personalization," it explained. "We are going to recognize the dedication and passion you've shown for this world. Specifically, the class, race, gender, face, hair, and marking selections for all characters that have achieved Level 20 and completed the Black Garden story mission will carry forward."

In addition to carrying over your look, these "veteran accounts" will be given "honors that reflect your Destiny 1 accomplishments."

"We believe this is the best path forward," it said. "It allows us to introduce the major advancements and improvements that all of us expect from a sequel, ensuring it will be the best game we can create, unencumbered by the past. We're looking forward to sharing more details with you later this year for how we will honor your legacy in the future."

No Caption Provided

Before the sequel arrives this fall, Bungie plans to offer one last live event in the first Destiny. Age of Triumph is meant to be "a fun and memorable celebration that will bring the first major chapter of our Destiny adventures to a fitting close." This will consist of new challenges and rewards.

Age of Triumph will launch at "the end of March." It'll first be revealed through a series of livestreams, starting with one this coming Wednesday, March 8.

The schedule and topic of each is as follows:

  • March 8 -- Age of Triumph Reveal
  • March 15 -- Age of Triumph Weekly Rituals
  • March 22 -- Age of Triumph Sandbox Update

Destiny 2 reportedly may be headed to PC in addition to consoles and could feature larger, denser areas than Destiny's Patrols. Officially, Activision has said the new game will "broaden" Destiny's appeal and is "designed to both excite our highly engaged current players but also to broaden the appeal even further, bringing in new fans and bringing back lapsed fans."

I hope the last update for D1 actually completes the game's plot and isn't just nee achievement things to earn and weapon rebalancing.

They really need to focus on their storytelling with this one. I have no idea what happend during my gameplay, the plot was a muddled mess, forgettable characters, and the only memorable moments i have of D1 is from my time in the Crucible PvP modes.

Also, why couldnt thosse grimoire cards (or whatever they called them) be accesible from the game..?

They need to lose the ridiculously shallow and repetitive feel of the game. They need to rethink character customization and classes, how they balance weapons (one guy does it at a whim it seems) and how they approach teamwork altogether. In the rare cases, when shooting your way out does not work, you get these lazy and uninspired puzzles that are not clever, creative, or fun. They have their work cut out for them, so hopefully their approach will work.

One nice thing to come out of this announcement, all the immature children who bought the first game on a whim won't be coming back due to being "butthurt", as they call it.

Good... I enjoyed the game, but it needs to be left in the past. Hopefully the second one will be what the first claimed to be.

So characters level 20 and above will be able to be transferred. Well just their looks and no skills. So when you open up Destiny 2 and transfer your characters you get naked transfers from Destiny 1. No cloths since that's a destiny 1 thing. No weapons since that's a destiny 1 thing. No vehicles since that's a destiny 1 thing. It's like being born for the first time . . .

GTA allowed certain aspects of your character to be transferred from GTAIV to V. At least give us an option to bring over just a few of our favorite things. DAMN, it can't be that hard. Or give us some perks for being faithful fans like: transferring characters and get this weapon, or this suit, or this amount of XP points. Give people incentive for coming back and throwing more money down the toilet.

I'm done ranting. Gonna go play GTAV and do some . . . something bad. LOL

As if there was anything to carry over. Your old gear? All of it will be obsolete anyway. Your skills and level? They'll probably completely revamp those as they'd just get the exact same game otherwise, where everything stays the exact same for as long as that game is active, again.

But aside from that there's really nothing to carry over. This game had pretty much no story to note, just some bla bla during loading screens or to tell you that it's time to fight off a few waves of enemies again. Anyone remember the robot girl that you met during the ending scene who gave you a gun? Never heard from her ever again, which pretty much sums up Destiny's story: nothing of any significance ever happened in it. Nothing but random filler content with no connections.

I'm guessing it's just gonna be exactly the same game you've all been playing for years, only with some new maps and weapon skins. and you're all gonna pay full retail price again, lol

All complaints aside, a fresh start is always great to bring in new players. And still trying to be positive, but maybe they believe in trying to make destiny 2 the great game everyone hoped for originally and are going to capitilize on it.

I don't see anything wrong with things not carrying over to Destiny 2. That is if this is really a sequel. Unfortunately, I'm not getting Destiny 2. After the way they've treated their playerbase with Destiny. I ain't touching anything from Bungie. I'm sure they'll pull the same stunts for Destiny 2. E.g. Block already paid contents (Weekly, Nightfall, Etc) with new DLCs, Vanilla content with base game, etc.

FU Bungie!

I'm happy with this decision, they didn't quite get Destiny right on the first try so I think it's fine for them to drop the content of Destiny One and focus their best on the second Destiny.

I really liked the progressing from lvl 1 up to the higher levels, I hope they can bring a harder progression system to the game, something similar to BF1's.

I don't care if my gears are not coming with me, I don't see the point for it anyways, even if I worked like a month or more to get the piece of armor I wanted or a weapon. Why do you want to keep the same look with the same freaking armor/weapons for 10 years. This game is kill and loot new stuff. It is time to move on to new stuff or even better stuff (I hope)

This is by far the biggest betrayal to their fan base they could have possibly made. A lot of people will probably not come back to the series because of this. Good job Bungie. You ruined your franchise and you've lost a lot of supporters because of this moronic decision.

@bfcochran16: Millions will flock right back to it, and play it for a few days, then the hate mail will start rolling in. Destiny 3 launches, millions will buy, then the hate starts rolling in. Rinse and repeat for years to come. I personally bought destiny 1 and played it maybe 3 days before returning it. But I know millions will still buy destiny 2, 3 and so on. Take CoD for example, all the hate infinite warfare got (most hated video on youtube EVER), still was the #1 best selling game of ALL of 2016. Lets not kid ourselves, its going to sell like crazy.

I agree with their decision to only carry over the visuals of our characters (especially since i wasn't stupid and bought in to "the eververse" micro transaction addiction. but in the defense of those stupid... stupid people that like to wipe their asses with perfectly good money for above all cosmetic items, i do believe at the very least cosmetic items, that provide no additional character upgrades or abilities (Which everything ever sold by eververse has only been cosmetic, with the exception of some character boosts) so in short, purchased cosmetics and any current silver (in-game currency bought with real world money) should transfer. The one thing that will upset me a bit (Unless they have like a "create your own" alterative) is the shaders. those were and are a grind. And a cosmetic one at that. Regardless, Destiny has been my favorite game since the beta and I'm looking forward to a much better told story. Get rid of the grimoire cards in the sequel and try telling those bits of information through cinemetics or something... So much lore the casual players will never know about. And calling a year 3 or 2 player a veteran player just because they beat the final YEAR 1 story mission is a bit ridiculous. A veteran player would be (In my and a majority of the bungie forum community opinion) would be a CONSISTENT player since the alpha, beta and launch day of the game. Calling these year 2 and 3 players or even a year 1 player that stopped playing for 6 months to a year, is a spit in the face to the loyal fanbase that supported and played the game, buying all the expanions ect for the last 3 years+... Those are the real veterans of the game and should be visually and seperately rewarded.

@j3diknightdave: I say screw those people that paid for cosmetic items, no items carry over, and they're the reason that Destiny had that system built in If It wasn;t for them, Bungie would have likely worked a system in that allowed players to earn those packages.

You really got to love all the complaints here. Why would they transfer over? Items from Everquest or Guild Wars didn't transfer over to their sequels. Yes you unlocked rewards for the next installments but you started your character over like all games. The mechanics of how leveling and such is gonna be vastly different from Destiny. Look how different Guild Wars 1 is from 2. My goodness people, come on!

Man...

That is the biggest slap in the face of a consumer I have ever seen in my life.

When TTK came out, and they started selling things for real money, I took that as my hint to get out while I still could (after investing countless hours). This is not salt. The game simply wasn't fun enough. I got tired of the repetition.

However, Destiny was still in my heart, and I was hoping to continue my character's story in Destiny 2. The promise had ALWAYS been that you would carry the same character over.

Thats why people invested so much in unlocking everything, all grimoire cards, etc.

This is just a stinky smelly b....

@gmussi: The balancing... story, no raid matchmaking there were so many things wrong with the first destiny. I didn't bother buying the last destiny expansion cause I was sick of their bs after TTK. I hope Destiny 2 is better but we will see. Hopefully assault rifles aren't useless this time round.

Prove us wrong Bungie, prove to us you can create a air-tight game.

Because THIS is a pretty big slap in the face to users who have supported this mediocre series for so long.

Sorry, but the "broad appeal" bit from Activision immediately makes me think MMO Call of Duty. They've already demonstrated they're perfectly fine with completely altering a game that everyone and their mom thought looked awesome just because they felt it was "too complicated".

I wished they would let us keep those emotes we purchased from Eververse or emblems. Well, I hope legacy players will get some special free loot. Cannot wait to see what it is going to look like.
