Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Review Roundup

Highrule.

On the eve of its launch, reviews for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have been published. Given that the last Zelda released for consoles was six years ago and that it's arriving on Switch, a brand new Nintendo platform, expectations are high.

Breath of the Wild looks like it will be meeting those expectations as reviews of the game are overwhelmingly positive. In GameSpot's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild review, Peter Brown awarded it a 10/10, saying it is "a defining moment for The Legend of Zelda series, and the most impressive game Nintendo has ever created."

  • Release: March 3
  • Price: US $60 / £50 / AU $90

GameSpot -- 10/10

"No matter how gorgeous its environments are, how clever its enemies are, and how tricky its puzzles get, the fact that Breath of the Wild continues to surprise you with newfound rules and possibilities after dozens of hours is by far its most valuable quality. It's a game that allows you to feel gradually more and more empowered yet simultaneously manages to retain a sense of challenge and mystery--which, together, creates a steady, consistent feeling of gratification throughout the entire experience. Breath of the Wild is a defining moment for The Legend of Zelda series, and the most impressive game Nintendo has ever created." -- Peter Brown [Full review]

IGN -- 10/10

"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a masterclass in open-world design and a watershed game that reinvents a 30-year-old franchise. It presents a wonderful sandbox full of mystery, dangling dozens upon dozens of tantalizing things in front of you that just beg to be explored. I've had so many adventures in Breath of the Wild, and each one has a unique story behind what led me to them, making them stories on top of stories. And even after I've spent more than 50 hours searching the far reaches of Hyrule, I still manage to come across things I haven't seen before. I'll easily spend 50 to 100 more trying to track down its fascinating moments." -- Jose Otero [Full review]

Game Informer -- 10/10

"Breath of the Wild is an achievement in the design of a living world. Hyrule is massive, with multiple environmental systems layered on top of a grand adventure. The only technical issue I encountered was one related to the frame rate when fighting multiple enemies in busy forests. Despite the massive scope of the game, Breath of the Wild retains Nintendo's knack for polish without any major technical hiccups to disrupt the experience. I was entranced by this version of Hyrule, and it surprised me at nearly every turn, from its wealth of discoveries to the way it shuns the established tropes of previous Zelda games. It represents a profound new direction for one of gaming's best franchises and a new high point for open-world interactive experiences." -- Kyle Hilliard [Full review]

Polygon -- 10/10

"I guess, in the end, it's not just that Breath of the Wild signals that Zelda has finally evolved and moved beyond the structure it's leaned on for so long. It's that the evolution in question has required Nintendo to finally treat its audience like intelligent people. That newfound respect has led to something big, and different, and exciting. But in an open world full of big changes, Breath of the Wild also almost always feels like a Zelda game--and establishes itself as the first current, vital-feeling Zelda in almost 20 years." -- Arthur Gies [Full review]

Giant Bomb -- 5/5

This sense of wonder is something that I haven't felt so strongly since I played A Link to the Past when I was seven years old. Ocarina of Time was able to capture some of that same magic in my teenage years. Now that I'm in my thirties, I don't think that I expected it to be possible for a game to make me feel like that again. I've been reviewing video games for twelve years now, and I'm used to describing games in a certain way. "This game controls well. This mechanic is innovative. The graphics are stunning. The skill tree feels limited." That type of language doesn't adequately convey how Breath of the Wild made me feel. Nintendo may have changed so many long-standing traditions of the Zelda franchise, but the spirit of discovery is as strong as it's ever been no matter your age. I didn't think I'd feel the Zelda magic this strongly ever again, but I couldn't be happier to be proven wrong. -- Dan Ryckert [Full review]

Surprised nobody mentions the graphics, there are times where the game looks really rough, with pixels everywhere. Not something that ruins the game but nobody mentioning it anywhere as a CON feels really weird to me...

@livedreamplay: Ive heard it mentioned in passing. But I think the actual design choices supersede the graphics. In other words, the graphics are good enough to serve their function.

Over 10 hours in already, this game is the real deal... Last game I played that long with in the first 24 hours was GTAV.

Still haven't made it to the first dungeon, did rush the castle though(and make inside so I guess that counts as a dungeon).

Wow is it really that good? I guess I'll find out in a little while, but I'm not a huge Zelda fan so it probably won't impact me as much.

Easy Allies gave them 4.5 out of 5. And they do the best English reviews I know.

Still a fantastic score regardless, but the framerate should be factored in the score for the reviews, and people at Gamespot and IGN have never been very good at giving a final verdict.

And rarely do I agree overall with Gamespot staff, and not just for the number, but how they preserve many games.

@RSM-HQ: There has since been a patch that addresses the framerate issues. In fact DualShockers originally gave the game a 9.5 with the main deduction being the framerate, but post patch they updated it to a 10

@dctcool: Easy Allies have a policy of never re-reviewing a game. Many games have had patches that make a game better and more fluid, improving them to near perfection.

Always thought Breath of the Wild would get the same treatment for that one main issue I'm reading about. However if we always see it as "but, but patches" when should they stop scoring these games?

They did the same with Dark Souls III when it launched with framerate issues and gave it a 4.5 as well.

Personally I respect reviewers more when they score and write about something they've experienced, and how the game was for them while reviewing it.

@RSM-HQ: How about review the launch version of the game? In this case, the day one patch should count since that is what the consumer is getting.

@TheEternalGamer: Reviewers tend to get games pre launch so asking for this means delayed reviews, which companies like Nintendo don't want either.

@DantheMan9856: If they do an increment of .5, it is the same as Gamespot.

Personally I prefer 10 with a .5 increment. It gives room to give games a firm wag of the finger when they have small issues. Although I hear the frame issue was fixed(I couldn't download the patch due to traffic or my internet).

@DantheMan9856: Why is that? Have you ever seen a 5/10 and thought it was a good game? Or a 60/100? A five scale distills the rating to it's most basic form.

Anyhow a review is only someone else's opinion. How can you know unless you try for yourself?

BOTW deserves it unlike Skyward Sword

That game got overinflated reviews and I enjoyed when Tom Mcshea broke the truth and gave it a 7.5

BOTW has actually proven it's worth and is more believable

So Nintendo decides to do open-world and does it better than anyone else. Not surprising, but is it enough to get me to buy the Switch, or should I just download it on to my Wii U tomorrow? I'm having trouble making the jump over one great game with only one more currently on the horizon.

@oskeezee: If you can afford to buy it and you consider yourself a dedicated gamer why wouldn't you? Every system has unique experiences, and it would mentally cripple me to not have the opportunity to play a game I want. I would happily sell a kidney. LOL!!!!

@jones72: I am a dedicated gamer and I can afford to buy it. Here's what happened yesterday: I was going back and forth between downloading on Wii U and buying the Switch and downloading on that. At one point early in the afternoon I had decided I would just get it on the U and told my wife so. Her response was to just get the Switch which was all the convincing I needed. Even though Zelda is without question the only launch I am interested in. I was overtaken by excitement and after work I swung by Best Buy to see If I'd get lucky and of course I didn't. It was completely sold out. When I got home I checked all BB, Walmarts and Targets in the area to check availability and it was all sold out. I thought about it for a few hours once again going back and forth between immediate download or waiting for the new system. Eventually I decided to download on the U and here's why: Although I'm a Nintendo fanboy and find it difficult to exist in a world with a new Nintendo console and not have it, as I mentioned above, Zelda is the only game I would get on the Switch, probably for months. Splatoon is not my type of game and I have Mario Kart on the U with all the DLC and I played the hell out of it. Battle Mode is not nearly enough to make me want to buy again. Maybe more importantly, I'm kind of pissed at some of the decisions Nintendo made with this system such as implementing all the motion control and controller gimmicks which creates the need for pricey accessories. Why couldn't they have just skipped that bs and made it technologically up to par with current consoles while keeping it portable. Would it have cost that much more? At least to the extent necessary to port 3rd party games. Leading up to the Switch debut, not a single person or news outlet was asking for the return of motion controls. Everyone just wanted a powerful system. Once again Nintendo disregarded the market and pulled some crap. This might be the fist Nintendo console in decades I skip. Then again if they announce killer games at E3 (namely new 1st person Metroid) I'll probably get the Mario bundle during the holidays like a pathetic Nintendo fiend.

@oskeezee: If you already have Wii U and isn't sold yet on Switch, why not just play it on your old console? I'm sure Switch will turn out to be an amazing console eventually, but nothing is lost on waiting for a hardware revision or at least a black friday promo.

@snxx: Well technically you want to get the better version and the Switch is the better one but the problem is it will cost you almost 400 dollars to get the better version because not only you need the game you also need a switch so you better up just getting the Wii U version if you have one and just wait until next year for the switch.

Dangit. I'm not ready to get a Switch yet, but I really don't want to play this on the underpowered WiiU. Looks like I have a tough decision to make... Play it on the Switch 6 months to a year from now or play it on the WiiU this week. Oh well... first world problems, I guess...

@jcharp: Just play it on the WiiU. The game was originally built for the WiiU. I'm willing to bet the differences are so minimal you won't even notice. Take all the internet bs with a grain of salt. There was no difference between Zelda TP on the Gamecube and Wii other then controls. This is Nintendo and their flagship title they're not going to neglect quality on the WiiU.

I admit, I'm a little blown away. I can't recall an instance where Gamespot, IGN, Game Informer, Polygon, and Giant Bomb had all given the same game a perfect score. The game currently sits at a 98 on Metacritic after 56 reviews, with the lowest score at a 90%. The only game to have a higher score than that is, ironically, Ocarina of Time.
