It doesn't really take advantage of the unique features of the DS but it works and it's an average racing game.

Asphalt: Urban GT Review by KKx2000 Publisher: ubisoft Developer: Gameloft Genre: Driving Asphalt: Urban GT is a racing game, that you probably don’t reconize unless you’ve played it on the N-Gage. The developer of Asphalt, Gameloft, are quite experienced in mobile games but they have developed games like Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Might and Magic mobile games. It’s quite noticeable that Asphalt: Urban GT was not originally designed for the DS but it doesn’t take advantage of the many great features the DS has to offer. Yet, it’s a very enjoyable game that will most likely give you some enjoyment. Gameplay: Asphalt has a quite solid and comfortable gameplay. It certainly does borrow from other games fx. Burnout; You get extra boost for taking risks etc. What might bother you the most is how the game seems to be stuck in the middle of either beeing an arcade or simulation. All the car tuning is very realistic and reminds you of a simulation and the cars look real enough but when you get to a turn you’ll find your self power sliding through. Asphalt: Urban GT uses very little use of the unique touch screen the DS offers. Overall the gameplay works but it could have been done better, the game plays good but is not exceptional. 6/10 [The gameplay works but could have been done better.] Graphics: The game is graphically impressive and is one of the best if not the best looking DS launch title. The frame-rate is good and some nice effects are used for example when you use the turbo boost. All the tracks have a unique look and look over-all pretty good. Even tough the graphics work nicely for the most part they can get irritating, especially in cases when there is so much stuff crammed on the DS’s small screen that you can’t really see decently what turn is coming up. If there wasn’t a sign that came up telling you in which direction to turn you would have to play each track several times to learn the turns. 7/10 [The graphics are impressive but not perfect.] Sound: The sound in Asphalt is average like mostly everything about the game.. The effects aren’t necessarily bad, but they are always the same. The soundtrack that plays during races seem to be played at low bit rate but it works. Overall, the sounds seems to be average and it’s quite clear that Gameloft seem to have hurried some to get this game out. The sound, which could be much better could be a lot worse too and you wont be to annoyed and in general it wont really bother you. 6/10 [Not really that impressive but you’ll get used to it.] The Wi-Fi ability is a quite nice touch. Unfortunately every player needs to have their own Asphalt gamecard. The game support up to 4 players and you can race in the various modes. It’s a nice touch and might be fun if your friends have their copy of the game. The game doesn’t take any special advantages of the great and unique features of the DS but it still works and is an average racing game. It was never on it’s way to beat any of the PSP’s racing games but it does a decent job tough. Asphalt: Urban GT was clearly rushed and only the graphics really seem to stand out. I guess you should be able to squeeze out a few hours of enjoyment but it might be wise to wait for another racing game for the DS too. Either way, Asphalt: Urban GT is an average game that could have been a lot better if the developers had more time to finish it. 6.2 [A rushed game that does not take advantage of the DS’s unique features.] Kristófer K.
