Great Game, if you never want to see how it ends.
It doesn't look as good for some reason. Could it be that the textures are monotonous and that the pop ins are reminiscent of the first Mass Effect? "NO!" you tell yourself as you continue along your journey. But as you play more and more the unfinished underbelly of the game starts to show through.
The AI is totally retarded, and feels something like original syphon filter mixed with the "WTF, how can he see me!?" of Tenchu. You'll walk right past guards in restricted areas, and at first they'll get a little suspicious so you'll climb on something and instead of coming over to see what the strangely dressed man is doing climbing up the wall they kind of just figure "hey, I'm supposed to guard this ten foot radius not assassins climbing walls!" and you'll be on your way. But as you scale the walls, you'll notice that the controls feel almost worse than the previous title. Soon you'll find Ezio jumping off things in the wrong direction, running up un-scalable walls in the middle of chase sequences, falling down, and, despite having the analog stick all the way in another direction, Ezio will proceed to run up the same wall.
The story is as rushed as you might expect it to be, not that i would know how it ends, because about sequence 8 you'll notice that there is nothing to do about the glitchiness of the game. And especially don't write Ubisoft about it, because they'll tell you that you are merely doing it wrong, and refer to ign.com for a walkthrough. And of course, it's a big important mission that you are unable to quit where the game messed up, so I can't even do side missions or anything. In this mission you must beat Cesere to St. Peter's Basilica to *spoiler spoiler spoiler.* But! You must also be anonymous to finish the mission. So you jump off the castle san't angelo (the shoddiest piece of level designing since Afro Samurai) and into the water. You dive so as to be anonymous when you come up, but you immediately are spotted and thus enter open combat again. Ok, must be the guards on the walls still so you climb out of the water and start your trek to the basilica. But you're in open combat!! So naturally papal guards are apparently carrying spare armor and putting it on citizens because there are so many of them. You also can't outrun them on the ground, because they are all the sprinting kind. So you take to the roof tops and despite getting shot with crossbow bolts every ten seconds you manage to get to a hiding spot about half way there. No guards have line of sight, so you hide; thinking in moments you'll be anonymous and on your way to completing the mission. However, you notice that while you are hiding, all the guards catch up to you using what is apparently a tracking device sewn into your hood, and stand around waiting for you to give yourself away. Your cooldown is complete! You are anonymous, but the instant you are, despite no guards having checked the hay, you are thrown back into open combat and forced out of the hay! The only other option being you hide, it doesn't throw you out and you literally watch all the citizens of Roma turn into Papal Guards!! Then you get to sprinting again and arrive at your destination. but you are not anonymous, so being a pro at combat you resort to killing everyone. (Did i mention you were timed, and you only had four minutes for all of this?)
This is just one example. The game simply wasn't ready.
Was I excited about the multiplayer? You bet. Was it totally fun? Yes, albeit finding a match takes so long it makes you totally want to take it out and play something else. The leveling up system was cool but with no single player and stupid amounts of time required to find a group, you'll excuse me while i take this game back to the store to attempt to get some money for it..
