Best selection of classic games, best delivery and presentation--Best of the arcade-to-GBA compilations!
I won't describe each game on this cart (other than to say that Missile Command moves a little faster than the Atari 2600 version). Most of us are already very familiar with the 6 hit games in this compilation, and if you're not, you should try this game pack out to see what your parents were playing when they were kids. At the time some of the games in this bundle were in the arcade, they were cutting edge technology that required special hardware to make them work. The alteration to these games to get them to function via pixels on the GBA screen is flawless as far as I can tell. Things have even been intelligently scaled (the space ship in Asteroids is clearly visible even on the small GBA screen, for example).
The six games that Atari chose to include in the compilation were GREAT choices! I think these are probably their most popular, all time hits! I clearly remember playing ALL of these games when they first hit the arcades decades ago. When I was still in elementary school, I remember spending many hours down at the local drug store dropping quarters into the Tempest machine--good times! The presentation of these selections is genuine and accurate all the way down to the opening screen telling how many "credits" (quarters) you need to deposit to play. The main menu of the game features an exciting and nostalgic music track made entirely out of old 8-bit video game sound effects. The main menu music sets the perfect mood and draws you back into yesteryear. The graphical display of the menu as well as all the games is crystal clear and just the right scale to make it possible to see and play the games without needing any magnification.
While I certainly enjoy Namco Museum and the other arcade compilations, I have to give the top score to this one. Atari really did it right this time. Overall, this game compilation beats the competition in the popularity and fun of the titles selected, the menu music, the overall presentation, and the graphical quality. I don't see how Atari could have improved this offering anymore unless they, perhaps, included more games on the cart....oh, wait...
They DID!
In addition to the arcade games on this pack, there is also an Atari arcade video game TRIVIA game. It runs by the old "3 strikes, you're out" rule and it cycles through a number of multiple choice trivia questions all focused on early video games, arcade games, and Atari history.
Get a copy of this game cart! If you dig the old skool classic games, this one is a winner!
