This niche-within-niche 2D action title picks up where the genre left off with Mega Man ZX: Advent. Colorful sprites, addictive score attack action, and extremely well-designed boss battles, Gunvolt is as hard as you want it to be, should you decide to un-equip certain items, or do a minimal flashfield playthrough. The characters are well-designed and the story, while not profound in any way, is above average for this type of game.
The only negatives here are that the game could use more in the way of enemy diversity throughout the levels, and the character customization options are a bit half-baked. Neither of these take away from the experience too harshly, as the core gameplay is so solid and addicting.
Not only is the gameplay provided here hyper-tight, but it leaves plenty of room for expansion in the future, should Inti decide to create a sequel. There’s so much potential in an already-great game, and that’s what has me so hopeful for this franchise’s future. Gunvolt is truly for fans of any old school 2D action gamers. A 95/100, for giving a jolt to a fading genre.
