Not as good as Tengen's R.B.I. series, but snazzy nonetheless...

Sports games on the NES were quite abundant, so it became the norm to take a formula and run with it. For baseball games, you had a top-down perspective with the batter on the bottom of the screen and the pitcher at the top. With Bases Loaded II: Second Season, they did well to switch it up a little bit.

This is not a game that uses real Major League Baseball licences, so the teams just go by their cities' names (i.e. New York vs. Philadelphia, Toronto vs. Washington, etc.). While this is somewhat disappointing if you're looking to play as the superstars you know and love, the names given to the players sometimes add humor to an already fun experience.

The graphics range from good to OK, the view when pitching and hitting delivering a believable look. The camera uses the standard outfield view you're used to watching real baseball games from, which certainly aids in making this title as realistic as the technology could allow. Once the ball is hit, however, the awkward top-down view makes fielding the ball a bit frustrating at times. The little men don't look that great doing it, either.

I must say that I did spend alot of hours playing this game as a kid, and was among the first I'd ever played multiplayer with. There is enough variety and fresh gameplay to get the avid baseball fan hooked. I rank this as the best in the Bases Loaded series, and a close second to Tengen's R.B.I. Baseball III in NES baseball games.
