The Baten Kaitos prequel definitley upgrades from its predessecor, with a much better card engine, and a better story.

User Rating: 9.2 | Baten Kaitos II: Hajimari no Tsubasa to Kamigami no Shishi GC
Baten Kaitos: Eternal wings and the lost ocean was known to many as a weird game(though i loved it). It didnt try to appeal to anyone really(besides its sleek cover). Baten Kaitos: Orgins has a much better card battlling system, which requires alot more strategy, and alot of other fluental upgrades that dramatically effect the game. Do you like it? Depends on who you are.

Gameplay
The new card battling system is great, and thats mainly the only diffrence, though, a big diffrence. It now forces you to pick numbers on cards going from 1 and up-no picking 5 then 2. It gives alot more strategy to the battles. There are also alot more side-quests in the game, and a better story. Your HP does revive after every battle, but its not as easy as it sounds.

Graphics
The graphics slightly improve upon the original, but not dramatically. Maybe a few tweeks here and there, but thats pretty much it. The graphics though, are still amazing.

Sound
Some characters have bad voice overs, others have great ones. The battle and exploration sounds are really great too, so the music works fine, in its own right.

Value
Alot more side quests in this game, and side quests that you want to do. It will drag you past the 50 hour mark with all the side quests you may want to take to earn rare magnus(cards) or extra story events.

Overall
The game is excellent--in my opinion. Really, i would say that its not a game for everyone, you may have to try it to see if you like the game first. If you were a fan of the first, you will definitley love the second. Hopefully monolith soft has alot more Baten Kaitos up their sleves-expecially if they turn out like this all the time.
