The first thing you notice about Batman: Arkham Asylum, is it's completely different from every other Batman game you have ever played. Historically, he has been relegated to light action-platformers. Another thing you will notice, is it's from a relatively unknown developer. But Warner Bros. and Rocksteady have hit gold with this game. Not only does it give you the gritty action you would expect from the dark knight, but it shows an immersive plot unprecidented for a game based of a comic superhero. This game is an intense, open-world, story driven brawler that starts with an opening cutscene depicting Batman as he brings The Joker to the infamous Arkham Asylum. Soon after you arrive, it's obvious that something has gone seriously wrong. The Joker escapes, and you spend the game trying to track him down, all the while thwarting his evil plots to attack Gotham. However, The Joker is not the only villain in B:AA, you will see notable villains such as, Killer Croc, Harley Quinn, Clayface, and Poison Ivy. The control mechanics are pretty tight, A does things like climb/use, X is your attack button, and Y is a counter button, I find myself using counter more than attack. The voice acting is stellar, using most of the people from the animated series. Most notably, is Mark Hamill, he does a great job as The Joker. This game startlingly good at keeping you on your toes, just as you get the hang of fighting, it hits you with a new enemy, and you start getting beat up pretty badly. You really have to learn to adapt. The tech trees are some of the best, as you knock out more and more goons, you get points for stringing together combos, these points can be used for Waynetech upgrades. These upgrades range from making your punches more powerful, to armor upgrades, to being able to throw three batarangs simultaniously. While the campaign is the bulk of the game, there are a few extra features worth checking out. Well, one really worth checking out. Challenge mode is a lot of fun, with maps that have you take out wave after wave of enemies, stringing up combos to get the high score, to maps that have you sneak around, completing objectives in the least amount of time possible. Overall, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a solid game, and a solid contender for game of the year.
