An unspeakable horror.
Well, if you didn't think those words applied to Batman, then you would be wrong my friend. Because according to the experts at SunSoft, Batman lived in a city of moving platforms. Batman doesn't have a utility belt and batarangs, but instead has a bright hot pink energy thingy on his wrist that shoots little pink bullets at his enemies. Batman weighs about 200 pounds in his beer gut. And when Batman dies, he apparently explodes into a bright light pink mess of glowing atoms. I thought I knew what Batman was, but I must have been mistaken.
As I played this game I was confused at first. I was expecting a fit and trim Batman that could kick butt and take names. What I got was a fat Batman that could barely jump and kicked like a little girl. I was expecting a cool and gritty Gotham City. What I got was a ho-hum city that could have been anywhere U.S.A. (well, anywhere that built their entire infrastructure on moving platforms.) And I was also expecting decent graphics and gameplay. What I got was a severely dated looking game (even for back in '92), and gameplay that made me feel like I was teaching a deaf kid how to hear.
But as I played, I realized that perhaps maybe I was wrong. Maybe I had bad information on Batman and Video Games in general. Maybe I was just uneducated on what Batman or games are really all about. So I put all that aside and put faith in SunSoft. They must have known better than me. Why else would they be given the task to make such a game if they were not experts on the subject?
So now I know that Batman has just one enemy: The Joker. And the Joker has henchmen with technology from the future. And I also know that games aren't supposed to be designed well. And that in a video game, you are meant to die. Over. And over. And over. And over...without any hope of going on to the next level. I also know now that no time should be spent on sounds, or animation when making a video game. I'm glad SunSoft straightened me out.
So if you want an eye opening experience on both the subjects of Batman and video games as a whole. Then I highly recommend Batman: Revenge of the Joker. I promise you will never forget it.
