Battle Bugs is a rather unusual piece of real time strategy. Id rather call it real time tactical game as there is not too much strategy involved. The game lacks any sort of resource managment, building or research facilities. In fact, it purely focusses on tactial, that is, military combat. Yet, instead of taking place in the usual suspect eras of war, the Second World War or Vietnam, the game lets myriads of insects and critters go head to head in a lethal fight over control of the backyard. The strategic element lies in knowing the respective skills and unique abilites of your heroes. Ants may be average in speed and strength but they can send a cockroach to heaven with throwing a bomb any day. The spider is slow but a mean melee fighter (who wouldn't be with four hands ?). The campaign plays out in successive levels, no campaign mode or overarching story which is kind of not good and makes the game a bit like a sandbox game. The mission objectives are varied but include the usual array of anniilation, area control etc.
All in all, a good game for its quirkyness and setting, although the core game experience is a bit simple and cannot satisfy in the long run.
