I picked this up because of Penny Arcade, and I needed something to play until South Park came out. After 10 hours of playing, I found it fairly boring. It has a lot of neat concepts, but fails to use them to their full potential.
I liked how defeating the same enemy multiple times unlocked bonuses, but because of the disorganized menu, I never really figured out what was unlocked. There was no real tutorial, which isn't a problem, but the game mechanics aren't intuitive, and the lack of a legend on the map was frustration. There was no real sense of character customization, as leveling up was automatic and you don't get to choose how a character progresses, which feels like an outdated system. There were perks that you can pick and choose, but it didn't change the way characters played. There was a bit of lore to find in each area, but it didn't really add to the overall experience.
There is a crafting system, but you just buy books to unlock recipes. You can't experiment to unlock things by chance. And the books you buy, you actually have to use them to unlock the recipes. And the crafting tables are all in dungeons, which felt out of place. Shops could be upgraded, but it was never made clear why you would do this from a story perspective.
The dungeons were nice the first time you had to go through them, but going through a second time was boring, and the loot you got never felt worth the time. You could grind on the overworld a bit, but you had to rest to make everything respawn. And resting cost more money each time you leveled up. I did like how you automatically skipped battled that wouldn't net you XP because they were too low a level, and you could still fight them if you wanted.
In conclusion, the game relies heavily on its attempt to stray from norms in ways like your tank being a teenage girl, and your healer being a war golem, but it wasn't enough to take away the overall generic feel of the game. The opening cinematic can't be skipped for the first minute, which got old quickly, and there were inconsistent load times. Some basic enemy fights went to the loading bar upon activation, and going between levels in a dungeon, both broke the flow of gameplay. Overall, the game gets a "Meh" from me.
