Enjoyable while it lasts but ultimately flawed to be considered a classic.
Let's start off with the positives. The main character is very versatile and has plenty of moves at her disposal (she uses weapons, fists, kicks and special finishing combos). Combat is varied with plenty of good boss fights and some of the levels that play homage to classics like outrun and space harrier are a really interesting take on this genre. It's quite lengthy to boot (approx 10 hours) and getting all the upgrades, trophies and awards can take considerable time.
The problems with Bayonetta however, stem from it being technically flawed and inept. I guess it's the 360 port argument but either way the visuals look grainy and washed out making the fight scenes difficult to keep track of and whilst the environments are fairly detailed the lack of clarity really hurts the game. Some would argue that if the core gameplay remains intact then it's okay but I'm afraid that's an ill conceived stance because I simply do not and should not expect a superior machine to have an inferior game full stop.
After finishing this I went back to NG Sigma & Sigma 2 and despite those games not having the best visuals on the PS3 the difference in quality was gobsmacking. So comparing this to say GOW3 or Uncharted 2 would be embarrassing to say the least. In fact, even if the graphics and animation were on par with the 360 I still do not think it could hold a candle to the PS3 exclusive titles I've mentioned. Mix in really poor loading times which are present everywhere and anywhere and you've got annoyance in abundance.
So give this a look at a bargain price just don't go expecting a classic.
