Its fun having a bionic arm. :)

Bionic Commando is a pretty straight-forward game. Despite some efforts to try and be more, the game is really only about one thing: doing cool tricks with your bionic arm! While there are some attempts at a story it isn't done well enough to keep anyone interested. What will keep you interested are the swing mechanics and combat abilities you gain and the desire to use them in new and different ways.

The main appeal of the game comes from your bionic arm. You'll use it as your main mode of transportation. Unlike Bionic Commando Rearmed, it is easy to use and always entertaining. A few minutes practice and any player should be able to zip around the stages. The other uses are in combat. You can punch enemies, pull yourself toward them and kick them, drop on them, punch object at people, throw objects, or just pick up the enemies and throw them (the last one is my favorite). You can also use guns and the game will conveniently give them to you exactly when you need them. The ammo is limited, but its enough to get the job done when used in combination with your arm powers. Using your powers and weapons in new and creative ways is not only entertaining, but it unlocks in game challenges that give you achievements and in game perks (like the ability to hold more ammo).

The downfall is that sometimes the game just feels limiting. It is 100% linear. While I do enjoy the simplicity of always know where to go, some players might want to explore. Unfortunately, you don't have that option. You have to follow the waypoints. The game uses radiation to force you to stay within a confined path. If you go to far to one side , or too high, or too low, you'll just get killed. Usually you have time to realize whats happening and just back to safety, but the few times it kills you, it will always feel a little cheap. Also, in the game, you're always doing the same things. Its all about swinging and killing the same enemies with a couple of bosses mixed in. The game isn't too long though, it took me less than 10 hours to complete on Normal, but that isn't a completely bad thing. The included stages have enough variety to keep things interesting. I think if the game went on much longer it might start to feel repetitive.

There is an included multiplayer which sounds great in theory. Theory is all I can say because I wasn't able to try it out. Over the course of my rental period there weren't enough people online ever to start a game. It could just be timing, but the community for this game's online is obviously quite small. Thankfully all the achievement are from the single player portion.

Bionic Commando is a good game. Though it lacks polish in some areas everything works. The core functions of your bionic arm are very solid and fun to use. The production values are mostly high and the music is superb. The voice acting and story really aren't so great, but they don't detract from the experience. Overall, the game is enjoyable and worth playing.
