The game retcons in a few new characters, puts you in the roll of one of the original Big Daddies, and then sets you out to reunite with the Little Sister taken from you by central antagonist Sophia Lamb. Through audio diaries, you learn that Lamb has been stealing young girls from the surface to replace the ADAM harvesters that were rescued (or harvested; either way, the ones "taken care of") in the first game. Numerous small tweaks and modifications (in addition to the new parts of the city you explore) let you know that this isn't a complete copy-paste of the first game, though. Upgrade your shotgun enough, and you'll fire an electrical charge with each bullet. Hacking now presents itself as a different minigame that instills urgency by happening in real-time. A powered-up Telekinesis Plasmid lets you lift and throw living people. You're now able to wield a Plasmid power and physical weapon simultaneously -- no switching necessary. Even the still-shot research camera has been replaced by a video recorder, allowing you to attack while earning rewards from studying your foes.

With a modified arsenal also comes the necessity for a more refined strategy than going into a room with guns blazing. One of the low points of the first game involved a sequence of standing over and guarding a Little Sister as she harvested ADAM from a corpse. Now, as a Big Daddy, that's your main job. Well, it's not a requirement, but if you want to get the most ADAM (and thus the best upgrades later in the game), you have to take the Little Sisters you meet to designated Splicer corpses and drain them dry. A more tactical selection of weapons and abilities (Trap Rivets, mini-turrets, summonable security robots, etc.) make setting up a perimeter and standing guard a much easier task, but it gets repetitive and time-consuming. I almost always play games as "good," but the longer I played, the more inclined I felt to just sacrifice my charge and get the "evil" ending.

For the most part, all of the changes make both the combat and gameplay better, but it's hard to feel like you haven't done it all before.
