Black lacks the tenacity of a hollywood action movie and is too short which leaves it to be another generic FPS.
Each of those gams gave us such delightful action (especially Serious Sam) that sometimes, you want it to feel like a hollywood action movie. And if you know me by now, you know that I like to make things go BOOM!! Too bad the authorites are in my way to do that so I have to stick to videogams.
Fortunately, Criterion and EA have released a new first person shooter that focuses on an action movie formula to deliver the excitement most fans want. The result: Ehh, not very good.
The Review
------------------------
Black, a new first person shooter from EA and Criterion pits you in the role of Sgt. Keller. A soldier part of an elite commando squad knowned as "Black". Fortunately, your character decides to not play by the rules and is sent to prison for doing some bad stuff which leads to a cutscene that leads you into a discussion with some other man reminising about Keller's path. Hope you like those boring cutscenes though, because you can't skip them unless you've already passed the level.
After the cutscene, you are instantly dropped right into the action. You'll noticed that the developers have payed attention to the graphics and detail of the game. Shooting explosive objects gives a good feel of destructibility and enjoyment in your rampage. It's just too bad that after the first and second level, all that starts to wear thin and becomes another generic FPS. You'll soon realize that the number of explosive objects start to go down and you're forced to go on shooting you enemies or create your own explosions with grenades.
You'll also realize that your enemies aren't that smart. These guys dropped out of special ed, not high school. They have poor accuracy unless armed with a rocket launcher or sniper rifle, they don't know which way to run when you throw a grenade at them, and sometimes they won't even know you're there unless you start shooting them. Which will also show you that these guys have choppy death animations. How come everything I hit a guy with the butt of my rifle, he ends up jumping back and falling flat on his back? Last I checked, it didn't hurt that bad. And for some reason, it's the same thing with a wonky pistol.
But you gotta give them credit, most of them sure are durable in the range of fire and take a lot of damage. Then their's the weapons the game has. Black offers quite a robust amount of weaponry for a generic FPS, it's just too bad that the numbers of cool weapons you get are limited to about 3 or 4, each mission. What's also weird about this game is that it supports the M rating only for strong language and violence. There is no blood or gore in the game. Hey EA, if you want to give me the feel of a hollywood action movie in a FPS. Then let me some limbs flying in the air.
Black is also short and absolutely supports no multiplayer at all. Which is odd, becaue using destructive elements in multiplayer would've been fun. This game looks exciting at first but then losses it's purpose really fast and soon you will take out of your console and put in the fun game. Which is why Black scores a dissappointing 6.6.
