The battle system alone is what every hack and slash game should use. It's like a very good FPS but you have a sword/bow/shield. You need to be quick and respond to your enemies attack in real time; plus it's not like God of War or Games as such where you just hammer on a button and stuff happens. You need to control all your movements with the controller, so dodging slashing, thrusting, defending, etc. all are moves you can make at any one time. Also the damage effects are very realistic. If you cut something it gets cut where you hit and it's messy like it really would be. I can't say enough good stuff about this game. The only disappointment was that it wasn't long enough nor was there another next generation to follow. There was a very devoted cult following for this game and for very good reason. Now if you are the kind of gamer with very little patience it will be hard to get into this game because learning how to move and battle with your character can be difficult at first, but once you get past that part you will experience the real gem this game truly is. Too bad it can't be played on newer OS's. Even the graphics were way before it's time. Still decent by today's standards I'd say.
