Great idea poor execution

Bladestorm is a lot better than the review here lets on. Koei seems to have a great idea to make a squad combat strategy game that is easy and approachable but falls flat in the sense that the game gets very monotonous when played in an extended sitting.
Dynasty Warriors, another Koei property, is well known for being all about the button mashing, apparently instead of button mashing in Bladestorm we are reduced to button holding. In other words we're looking at dynasty warriors on auto-pilot!
In terms of story the basic plot puts the player in control of a mercenary who works for either the British or French forces during the hundred years war. the unfortunate aspect of the story is that you cannot choose to always fight at brits or french as the story has you using both at certain points. The story is a bit weak as well as the game is pretty much mission based so it is hard to see an overarching story in place. The story, however, is not a huge problem as you can always review key figures and plot points at the home base/pub that acts as the game's main hub.
One item I liked about the game was the vast variety of troops available and the customising you can do with them. To use a certain troop (eg horseman) you need to find or buy the book/manual for that particular troop, after which you can earn exp for them and buy them equipment. It's actually kind of fun to sve up and buy some good weapon for your favourite troop set, although it left me wishing that I could buy a full equipment set for each. As it stands you can only buy weapons. Perhaps if this level of modification was expanded the game would have more lasting appeal.
Overall you can have a lot of fun with this game. The challenge level is low and the learning curve is also low, but for the right price it's well worth the price of admission!
