A poor substitute for GGX2

User Rating: 7 | BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger PC
I was pretty excited when I heard this was being ported to PC. The reviews I read touted it as having a deep combat system that takes a lot of time to master. Um… compared to what, Double Dragon V? Thats not to say that it is terrible, but if, like me, you were led to believe that the combat is unusually deep, think again. This title was also hailed as the evolution of Guilty Gear, so I began playing the two side by side on my pc. The combat in Guilty Gear X2 far outshines that of BlazBlue, which is shameful considering the years between release. This game needs a few more characters and a lot more moves. If you could apply these graphics to GGX2 you would really have something.

With games like Tekken out there, having characters that boast well over a hundred moves, and character lists of over 30 fighters, BlazBlue begins to feel a bit outdated. Granted this could be said about other 2D fighters like Street Fighter 4, but there is a certain indefinable quality there that this game is missing. There are certain games that ten minutes after you shut them off you kinda want to play again. BlazBlue never had this effect on me.

Certain characters had a very fun and original feel, while others felt bland and generic. My favorite character turned out to be a cutesy little cat girl named Toakaka, who liked to throw bowling balls and apple cores at her opponents. Toward the end of the game one of her opponents announces that Toakaka is a "leftover replica from the previous age,(whatever that means)" and I was like "wait a second, is he talking about the GAME, or this kitty girl?"

All in all this game was fun to look at and kept me interested for a hot minute, but quickly lost its appeal; kinda like my fish tank.
