The campaign mode is where Blitz spins itself away from traditional football games, with cinematic cutscenes telling a seedy story before each game. You take control of a struggling team owned by a man looking to pad his bottom line by having the city foot the bill for a new stadium. Yet before he can fill the luxury box seats, he has to return the franchise to its winning ways. This is where you come in. The campaign begins with players selecting a team name, logo, and one of three stadium types before choosing one of three rookies and one of three veterans to fill out their team. While you can edit names and uniforms, there is no fantasy draft or create-a-player mode, so you have to play with the hand you are dealt.
Adding a trainer will help the team in a specific area while you begin a seven-game season in the fictional league’s lowly Division III. To please the owner, you have to win all of your games to advance to Division II and then Division I, ultimately competing against your chief rival, the New York Nightmares, led by player Quentin Sands (voiced by Lawrence Taylor). Players start the campaign mode with $100,000, which can be used to purchase shoulder pads, helmets, gloves, shoes, and sleeves. Each piece of equipment adds to the team’s overall stats in areas like tackling, agility, and catching ability.
