Gamespot off the mark

User Rating: 8.3 | BloodRayne 2 XBOX
Oddly enough, given the review deck of this piece, I don't think gamespot was wrong in much of their assesment of this game. It is very straightforward, and tends towards a lot of style. There is no revolution in gaming here, any more than Devil May Cry was revolutionary (fun as all hell absolutely, but hack and slash has been done before, and so has style). The question I'd pose to anyone looking at this game is: did you like the first one? If you did, get this game. It's that simple. If you liked the first one but felt it needed more polished graphics and depth, but otherwise was fun, rent this game first. If you hated the first game this game is fundamentally similar enough that it's not your thing. Why do I feel gamespot was off the mark? There was a huge docking of points as a result of the game being "too straightforward"... Criticizing a game of this type for being too straightforward is much like complaining that Civilzation lacks enough first person shooting action. While it's not UNTRUE, it fundamentally misses the point. Every game that hits the shelves should not be Halo or Warcraft or Myst... the occasional mostly-mindless gorefest-button-masher is WELCOMED. If Bloodrayne had promised revolutionary gameplay with massive role playing elements, hours of cinematics, in depth strategy, and then delivered Bloodrayne 2, I could see where GS would be ticked... but really, it is what it is. Simple, but not boring gameplay is generally complemented by fabulous graphics. Look, if you can't be amused sometimes by the type of action you find in Bloodrayne 2, so be it, this is not the game for you. All games do not need to be all things to all people. Is this game a 10? HELL NO. Is it a 7.3? HELL NO.
