This game could have been one of the greatest and it really requires a follow up to lose the flaws.
First the major downfalls:
The graphics are just horrible no talking around that. Even for the old N64 it just doesn't look good. Ok the 2nd level/world looks a bit better being green and with rain so you won't notice every bad looking pixel but still it's just no where near the average.
The way you move as a character is also bad, when you're in a vehicle it usually is ok exept you get stuck sometimes. But when you lost your vehicle and you have to walk for a long while it's a real pain in the ---.
There also isn't a way to save your game exept when you would have played through an entire area which would make dying or having to quit the game very, uhh.. bad.
Also this is the only game I've had on my N64 (which were about 21 or so) that crashed 0_0... And due to some bug I couldn't finish the game... When you'd have done all quests, killed the boss some portal was suposed to open which it didn't. Even though it was released late I still don't feel this is a very stable game.
Second the things that are neither good nor bad.
The weapons are not too special, there was some way with some type of cheat which didn't always work and I still haven't figured out how excactly I did it but which would really make your weapons lots of fun. For example your plain pistol would turn in a laser, not that special. But your Rifle would turn into a HOWITZER. This would completely ruin some buildings with just one hit. Your machine gun would turn in a automatic Rocket lancher from which you could guide the rockets. This would all make the weapons a lot more fun to ruin stuff and alliens with.
The story isn't that original but it's also not to boring to play along with. You start in Greece with some old vehicles dating from the time between the first and second world war. The second level is much more fun (in my opinion) and is staged in Java somewhere in the 2nd WW. So you continue through very different enviroments and use better vehilces.
Third the things that are GREAT.
Ok from what you've read so far you'd think this game generally ----- but I still think it's a great game.
This was one of the first games in which you could use just about any vehicle you'd like. The only thing I haven't found in the game where a bicycle and a submarine. You can drive several cars, trucks, busses, an Ice cream van, motorcycle, etc. You can use tanks with different weapons and artillery to kill some aliens with, (and sometimes buildings and people, they don't like to be eaten so that's one way to save them right?), you can use planes to bombart your enemies with and get around the map quicker. Same goes for the helicopters which were my favorite since they were so easy to move about with. There even was an alien saucer so even space vehicles are available. Then there where boats which where easy to use and some of which also had very nice weapons. So the ability to use vehicles in this game is a giant +.
Then I've never even up untill now have seen anything like it around on the market so it's kinda a unique game.
Even though the enviroment looks ugly the overall layout of the land is nice to move around through cause almost nothing looks the same in shape.
And so overal when the game didn't crash, I was having plenty of ammunitions and could continue on as I pleased I was having a great time. This realy isn't like the plain shooter you're used to playing. There is a lot of dept added to this game. By the vehicles and the huge landscape you're playing in.
My conclussion:
Almost, but not quite what it could have been. I really think it's to bad that up untill now there still hasn't been a "Body Harvest 2" on the GC, PC, or whatever. If they would redo the graphics, the controls, uh just the overal programming of the game. Keep the vehicles, the story (cause nobody knows it anyway) and the gameplay. This game would have been what it could have been: just great.
If you can't stand lousy graphics or don't like aliens sci-fi action at all don't play this game. If you're in to something new, unique, don't care about graphics and like sci-fi, you'll like this game very, very much.
