My first Bomberman game gave me a pretty good impression of the series.

Bomberman games are somewhat well known. Nothing like Mario, Grand Theft Auto or Madden but they are up there with games more like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro in popularity. For some reason, Bomberman games never really look appealing to me so I never tried one until I saw this one Virtual Console for a 600 point download. (equal to $6) So, I downloaded it.

I do not regret downloading Bomberman even though at first I wasn't too big on the game. It was pretty fun but not mindblowing at all. Eventually, it got more addictive, and I'm just talking about the single player. It's fun and somewhat challenging until you start to understand it more, then it gets pretty easy.

The whole purpose of the single player game is to collect power ups and use bombs to break bricks in a small square shaped level to reach enemies and blow them up. As simple as this may sound, you must be very careful where you place your bomb so you don't get stuck and blow up with it, and also you have to have good timing because the enemies are always moving and as you progress through the levels it only gets tougher. After you've killed all the enemies in the stage, you must then destroy blocks until the exit appears, then you progress to the next stage.

Keep in mind that it's just the single player and that this is without a doubt a multiplayer focused party game. The multiplayer is quite a bit better, if not perfect. It has the same concept except you are facing quite smarter human players and you can collect way more power ups. In addition to that there are multiple stages to choose from each with different gimmicks, such as moving platforms, etc. The multiplayer modes get really frantic because you can get up to five players. (Wii Remote plus 4 Gamecube controllers) This game can be controlled with the Wiimote flipped like a NES controller, with the Classic Controller or with a Gamecube controller. For me, it is easiest to use the Wiimote.

The graphics in Bomberman '93 are colorful and nice looking but they do lack depth. It's not too big of a matter though because the TurboGrafx 16 had kind of low standards and this game looked great at one time.

The music is decent as well. It's pretty unique and I assure you that no other game has music even remotely similar to this. That being said, it sounds a little bit fuzzy and weird, and sure enough, it does get repetitive. There isn't much going for the sound effects in this game either.

Overall, Bomberman '93 is a great choice to download. It's cheap at $6 (600 points), and a really fun game especially if you plan on playing multiplayer. It's not for everyone though.
