A fun adaption of the classic game, let down by a frustrating online lobby system.
The game looks great in high definition, and offers a fair amount of customisation with different arenas (some of which have special traps), different game modes and the ability to pick which power ups will be available during the game.
In local play mode, you can play against friends using multiple controllers or against CPU players controlled by the game, or a combination of the two. While playing against CPU opponents offers some enjoyment they are fairly predictable, so you'll want to play against real humans. This is where the online feature comes into play.
Once a game has begun the online play works quite well. I have noticed some small glitches when the latency is high (e.g. two people picking up the same power up), but for the most part it works quite well. What holds it back is a frustrating lobby system used to create the matches.
Once you've joined a lobby, you'll see a list of all the players with a red cross next to their name. Each player needs to press X to get a green tick next to their name before the game can start. However, if any player enters or leaves the match, all the ticks get reset and the process starts over. There also seem to be some other conditions that reset the ticks, which gets frustrating. If one player refuses to press X, there doesn't seem to be any way to start without them: your only option is to quit and pick another game. To make matters worse, if you were using the "Quick Match" option to join a game, you'll likely be added back to the same game. The "Custom Match" option is a lot better, giving you a list of available games.
Despite those frustrations, the game is still a lot of fun and worth the price. It is a good game to play when friends are over.
