Borderlands is an FPS with RPG elements that takes places on the fictional planet of Pandora. When you arrive on the planet, you are greeted by a "Guardian Angel", she wants you to look for "the Vault". You are also greeted by a robot, Claptrap. The planet is also infested with Skags, Rakks, Spiderants and many other creatures and variants of those, as well as Bandits, Psychos, and more humanoid enemies, as well as variants of those. Along your way to the Vault you will complete quests, and probably side quests, you WILL kill a lot of enemies. Borderlands has a procedural loot system, it gives you random loot when you kill something. Though you have to be a certain level to use some loot. Well, a lot of loot.
