Don't let the cartoon graphics get you down. Theirs still a lot of depth in this game.

I read a lot of great reviews on Borderlands before buying it but I wasn't sure if I would pick it up or not. It went on sale on the Steam network though and I thought 'what the hell' I'll give it a shot.

The game is similar to Fallout 3 in it's post apocalyptic feel, though your visiting planet here, it's not Earth. I was impressed by the upgrading customizing weapon system. It rewards you by leveling up your character and choosing what kind of character to build. The upgrades are divided into 3 categories, Health, Guns, and Shields. I use the guns as I like the fact that I can blast my way through a difficult part of the game.

I found the hardest part of the game was in the first 10 hours of play. My character had a few tricks up his sleeve but not enough to play fair against the newer enemies. I must have died a dozen times in certain spots because I would run out of ammo and money and the enemies respawn after a time. Trudging through paid off though, eventually you have enough clout to push your way through a mission.

The bosses were fun but kind of repetitive. I found the best strategy was to just run circles around them and use a shotgun or rocket launcher. You have a turret gun that deploys when you want and it can recharge your health at a rate that depends upon your customized upgrade choices. I found the turret to be a lifesaver, when your almost dead and the heats on deploy the gun and cower behind something while your health and shields regenerate.

The game is surprisingly large, a few times a new area would open up and basically double the size of the map. You get missions from posts throughout the game so that in itself allows you to take your time and explore areas of the game.

The cartoon thing through me off at first but it's kind of cool, vivid colors make it entertaining enough and the battles still feel like any other well developed game.
