This game is incredibly fun, bring along a mate and its way better.
Lets start off with the bad points shall we...... -cricket sounds- Well theres a serious lack of friendly NPC's.... ummmm... Nope i can't find any at the moment, shall we move onto the good points?
I'll tell you about the multiplayer side of things first. Multiplayer RPG's enjoy massive success, we all know that from MMORPG's, but Borderlands takes things to a much smaller scale. Split-screen offers you a 2 player mode for you and a buddy, LAN Party allows you and 3 other players in the same house to play together and Online allows you and 3 other players to play together whereever you are.
Characters saved in multiplayer mode can be used in single player, so if you play with a friend but he has to go, you can continue in single player mode until you play again, although its not your fault that your a few levels ahead of him.
The game uses cel-shading, similar to the cutscenes on GTA games. Only characters are cel-shaded however. The graphics are fairly impressive, long draw-distance and some nice special effects leave nothing to complain about.
The playing field of the game is large, there are several maps, which each take easily a few hours to complete the missions in them, so you won't be completing the game in a hurry most likely. In multiplayer modes however, all players must remain in the same playing field, but you probably wouldn't like to go off on your own anyway, its much better to stay in a group, facing a bunch of enemies on your own is a great way to achieve death.
The game does feature vehicles in certain playing fields, once the player reaches level 10, he unlocks the Machine Gun Runner and the Rocket Launcher Runner, both of these have 2 seats i believe, one for the driver and one for the gunner. If your playing single player, you can use X to make the turret select a target, then hold down L2 to make the turret fire. Vehicles are very strong, about 3x as strong as a level 10 player, the XP gathered whilst in a vehicle is greatly reduced, so its probably better to use it mainly for transportation than a weapon.
There are various enemies in the game, Skags are the most common and probably least dangerous enemies, kind of like lizard things that jump through the air and whack you, they are the first enemy the player encounters. Bandits are also a common enemy, and will attack you shortly after the beginning of the game. Psycho's are less common at the start, with only a couple of spawn points for them, however you will encounter them very frequently later on, they are dangerous and mainly use melee weapons. Rakks are rare, you will be able to see where they spawn from miles away, as they are flying creatures, they attack by doing quick diving runs in formation, a large swarm of them can kill an unsuspecting player before he knows whats happening, luckily they are very weak, a fast firing weapon is most effective, as almost anything will take them out in a few shots, combat rifles are very effective, as they are high damaging and accurate. There are several other enemies which i won't go into in this review.
There are also 3 character classes to choose from, each one with unique skills and special abilities.
If you want a good co-op RPG for you and your friend(s), then this is the game for you, it's truly enjoyable on your own, and great if you have a friend with you, when your facing an impending mob of death, you'll become closer than you ever possibly imagined.
